I was left in mystery on my way to the theater yesterday. I live in Syracuse and had never been to the Wescott Theater before. The way they handled ticket holders/will call/purchases was weird there. Among that the amount of ink put onto my hands was just crazy, but that didn't change my mind about this show. The place seemed small from the outside, but once inside it was just great! The interior had a simple counter bar at the top to the right and a counter for selling merchandise to the left. The rest was just open space and the stage. The lights shined on the stage and revealed a smoke machine creating a hot, comforting atmosphere that just seemed perfect for the show.
The opening act was a duo wielding an acoustic, country guitar and Bob's stand up bass. They made pretty good sound from only having two guys performing. The performers name is Chuck Meade and he played some good old, original country. This type of music might not be my cup of tea, but he was playing pretty good at what he was doing. He had fun, the crowd had fun and the night was still young.
Once Chuck and his buddy left the stage the audience was introduced to a long wait. The main act was late! I am sure a lot of people didn't seem to care if they were late. Every couple of minutes or so everyone cheered and chanted to try and get the band to come walking out onto the set. No one was going to leave without hearing The Avett Brothers perform. I can't recall how long it was that they took to appear (I believe 30 minutes, but it seemed like so much longer).
The group came into the light finally with coffee in hand. They got ready and opened up with Pretty Girl from Annapolis (I think). Getting into the line up they played all of the "Pretty Girl" songs in a row. The songs ended with the explosive finale of Pretty Girl from Chile. I really wish I knew the whole line up, but they mostly played from Emotionalism and Four Thieves Gone. They also included "St. Joseph's" and "I and Love and You" in the list of songs. The band left after (again... I am trying to remember) "Die, Die, Die" and the place was having such a blast that they just wanted more. The chanting and cheering ensued and the guys came back on stage to perform Paranoia. It was odd for me to hear the same song as an encore from last night, but I went with it. This time was even better though! At some point Scott Avett broke a couple strings off his banjo and the crowd decided to take over singing for him and his brother, Seth. It was amazing! After the show I got to talk with Joe and Scott. Both of them thought that last night's show was one of the most amazing shows they've done so far. I totally agree with them! Too bad Bob and Seth were asleep, but they need it for Rhode Island.
I gave this 5 stars out of 5 because of how amazing they played and how much fun everyone had, my self included.
