Samantha Crain, Frontier Ruckus, HGTR

Great show!

Samantha did an acoustic set. She said when they got there, they weren't aware that HGTR was also playing. The bar owner/manager or someone said only two "bands" could play which is why she played by herself. It was awesome, nonetheless. I love her. Her voice and songs cut through the din. I don't have her new CD yet. Was gonna buy one last night, but she left them back in DC.

WHY has no one been talking up Frontier Ruckus??? I was completely and extremely pleasantly surprised. I loved them.Great tunes, great energy. Bought their CD as soon as their set was over.If you get a chance to see them or Samantha, don't pass up the opportunity.

HGTR was my least favorite of the evening, though I definitely enjoyed them and would see them again. They definitely play their hearts out, but I enjoy more contrast, light/shade in my music. They had quite a few fans at this show. The place was tiny(very), but I'm guessing there were at least 50,maybe 75 people there. I'm not good at estimating crowd size.

Happy to see goldenrule and yellow bandit again. Also, my son got off work and ten and came to the show (he missed Sam). Really enjoyed being there with them.

It really was a great show. I'm so glad we decided to go. I agree with stirred that there's a sameness to HGTR's music, but you'd have to be in a coma to resist its charms. They're playing a free show on July 14 that I hope not to miss. BTW, nice job on the kid, stirred! It was a pleasure to meet him, and to see you and yellow bandit again. I hope he made it home without too much delay

I agree that Frontier Ruckus is a great band. I'll be seeing them along with Samantha in Charlotte in just a few days. Did they have the new CD "Dead Malls and Nightfalls" for sale? Their two earlier releases are very good. I especially like The Orion Songbook. I was sad to hear they had lost their female singer. She was a nice addition.
Here are some photos of them from just over a year ago.

It’s more fun than a week at Betty Ford.

When I asked if they had any CDs, the banjo player went and got a box and The Orion Songbook is what he gave me. Maybe that means they didn't have the new one with them. I don't even know what they have available, but I will definitely be searching it out. Gonna listen to the CD on the way to work in a few minutes.

Karen, it really was my pleasure to see you again. Thanks about the kid. Pretty proud of him. Smiling

It really only took a few minutes to get yellowbandit's keys out of the truck.....once we found a coat hanger! He did make it home safely, per facebook updates. Smiling

I keep shoes on from the time I wake until the time I go to sleep. I was in a fist fight once, back in high school, and I was wearing flip-flops. I found it difficult to defend myself without shoes on, so I always keep a pair on now. Just in case.

I really like The Orion Songbook. I saw them maybe a year ago. They had a great song but that typical problem of losing the lyrics in the volume of the instruments. David mentioned at the time that they were one of those bands he liked recorded more than live, and I had to agree. I am sorry they lost their female singer, too. Still I wish they would pass this way again. I keep watching. It's also been too long since we last saw Samantha.

BUT, HGTR is heading this way, and I'd take them over almost anybody.

Rejoice always, Mark

I've now had the chance to listen to The Orion Songbook several times. I have not been this excited about some new (to me) music in quite a while. The music alone, is wonderful (melodies, chords, instrumentation), but the lyric writing is just outstanding. Words mean a great deal and are usually what sets something apart for me. Brilliant word pictures. Wonderful sincerity on stage, too.

If you've been needing a shove to give these guys a listen, consider this that shove.

Oh, and how great is Dolph's ear for music? Avetts, Samantha Crain, Frontier Ruckus, Carolina Chocolate Drops......seriously, some of the best stuff around.

I took stirred's advice today, and have a new band to add to my favorites list! Very excited to see them here in Asheville next week.

Also, the new album Deadfalls and Nightfalls will be available at shows starting July 17th. You can pre-order from this link and get an instant download of "Nerves of the Nightmind" : http://www.frontierruckus.com/obtain

This link provided to me by blasto on FB is a five song preview of their new album. I am completely smitten by them. I'll shut up now.

Rejoice always, Mark

I saw Samantha last night & Duke Gardens... what a perfect night! She was amazing, as always & the gorgeous venue & light breeze on a hot summer night, just made it that much more perfect. I just adore her live. I was bummed that I wasn't able to see her the night before with FR opening. I have been watching FR on youtube & really like them. I was very pleasantly surprised though when she invited two of the guys from FR to join in for a song - singer & banjo player... and what a wonderful addition they made! Samantha & the banjo together were a lovely combination! I'll definitely be listening to FR more... hoping to see them & SC live again soon...

Samantha was big fun last night at the historic Double Door Inn. Some of the new songs were a major departure from the Samantha Crain I thought I knew. She strapped on an electric and blasted out a few tracks that had her down on her knees milking out tones from her amp. It one point I expected her to pull out a can of lighter fluid and recreate that classic Hendrix moment from the Monterey Pop Festival. Dolph and his wife were there and I spotted a few other Charlotte area luminaries in attendance. (Eric Scott Guthrie and legendary percussionist/producer Jim Brock)

I liked Frontier Ruckus much better this time around. The multi-instrumentalist saw/horn player was particularly impressive. The few tunes where they shared the stage with Samantha were killer. Each band ended their sets with an unplugged song standing at the edge of the stage or on the floor with the audience. Those two songs alone were worth the drive down from Greensboro. All in all, it was a memorable evening and I am so, so glad I made the effort to be there.

@sundayrehab saw you there, but didn't get to say hey I recorded FR's unplugged song on my iphone and posted it to my Facebook page here if you can access it. I was really impressed with them and I'm from Detroit, so some of their sentiments really struck a chord.

Thanks for coming out David. Congrats on WQFS now going around the globe via the net. Such great news!

Hm, Frontier Ruckus for free tonight in Black Mountain. Might hafta go.

I saw Frontier Ruckus in Charlotte last year, I wasn't terribly impressed. But I was also distracted by the female singer that only sang, IMO band members should contribute with an instrument. Although that dude in Mighty Mighty Bosstones that just danced was pretty rad (not really). Ruckus was opening for Jim Avett, Paleface & Bombadil so it might've been JLM syndrome.

The first time I saw them, was streaming Ramseur Records night online and the girl was with them. I made a comment either here or on tablive, that I didn't feel like she contributed much, not just because of no instrument, but her harmony to me, was predictable and kinda boring. I do think she has a lovely voice. I had not checked them out since, because of that. Imagine my surprise when I went to see Samantha, and I was blown away by them! The girl is no longer with them. I'm sure they feel that it's a loss, and some here have expressed that, but I love them much more without her. The banjo player is singing harmonies now and I think his voice is more complimentary to Matthew's. The lyrics and the arrangements are much more stand out to me now. Since it's free, I think you should give them another shot! I'll be surprised if you don't enjoy them.

eta: found my exact comment from 5/24/09: "I believe I was mostly turned off by the unimaginative backup singer, who's harmonies just followed the melody, note for note. It was redundant song after song. I would have enjoyed them more without her."

Sometimes the voice is the instrument!

As stirred noted, she wasn't the lead singer. If you're singing lead, that's one thing but having a single backup singer is kind of odd. Similarly, I find it kind of awkward when Scott doesn't play drums on I&L&U and is just out there on an island.

"I wonder which brother is better, which one our parents love the most...he said I love you and I'm proud of you both in so many different ways."

I must have missed that detail. I'm old and fall asleep reading long posts. I've kind of half been paying attention to some new-ish bands like The Decemberists who seem to have a female singer who isn't backup but more of a secondary or B-singer if you will. Is this a trend?

Heard Frontier Ruckus on the XM radio show The Loft this morning.
Sorry but I forget which song they played but the DJ , Mike Morrone, said it was from their new album , Deadmalls and Nightfalls.

He then went ahead and compared them to The Band. Now that got my attention and I really do like Morrone.
Gonna start paying a little more attention to these guys.

I saw that show in Charlotte last year. I was also less than impressed. I have grown to love there music over the past year. When I saw them a week ago in Charlotte at the Double Door I was blown away. I also have an advance of the new CD and it's damn good. I am already looking forward to seeing them again. I hope it's soon.

Just caught the show here in Black Mountain. They were fantastic! Lots of songs from the new record. They had some sound issues towards the end with the banjo, so they all unplugged and played the last song acoustically. It was amazing. Also, really nice guys! They were very gracious to have some fans in the area. I let them know they are in good hands with Dolph.

Docmike,
I find that Band comparison interesting. I don't hear it myself, but within seconds of the first song, my friend that was with me said the exact same thing.

Nothing's good because nothing lasts. And all that comes, it comes here to pass.
I would voice my pain, but the change wouldn't last.
All that comes, it comes here to pass.

Just started listening to Frontier Ruckus, and I'm a fan! The Daytrotter session is great, and from what you've all said, they sound like they're great live. Hope to catch them if they make it out to the West coast.

Cbustrev, I also find it a little odd when Scott doesn't play drums on I and Love and You - I like watching them move around on all the instruments, and I feel like he's not sure what to do with his hands when he isn't playing something Sticking out tongue

I read another interview somewhere (digging for it now) where David (their banjo player) said the girl (Anna) who used to be with them was their bass player, initially. I think it's pretty likely that she was still on the road with them while Eli was getting up to speed on the bass. She's recently engaged from what I hear, and found 6 months on the road to be a little too much while trying to start a family. Which would explain the time period where she was just kind of standing around not doing much. I'd imagine it was probably a sad time for the band, losing a member, which would explain why the shows during that time period were less than impressive.

Found it : http://www.annarbor.com/entertainment/frontier-ruckus-preview/

Good work blasto.
Was wondering about that.

Deadmalls and Nighfalls' national release is tomorrow. I pre-ordered the album, so I am really hoping it is in my mailbox tomorrow. I got an email today, though, saying it had been shipped, so I'm thinking it will be a few days. I'm excited! Anyone else order it?

The entire album can be streamed here: http://www.facebook.com/frontierruckus?v=app_178091127385&ref=ts
