Sony/Columbia/American

Sony/Columbia/American

This may seem like a silly question, but could someone please explain the connection with these record labels?

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen

There's really only 4 record companies.

1. Universal Music Group
2. Sony Music Entertainment
3. EMI Group
4. Warner Music Group

Sony owns Columbia and Columbia Records is what they call an "imprint" and American Recordings is the record label. Rick Rubin founded American Recordings and for a long while, Warner Music Group was the distributor. Rubin moved American to Columbia as the distributor and became co-head of Columbia.

It's confusing. Basically, small record labels sometimes look for distribution deals and they turn to the bigger companies to do that. And those bigger companies are owned by one of the four above.

Thanks everyone for the info, I just get confused because some articles say the Avett's are with Columbia, then I see the upside down American flag, which obviously is American. (still don't get the upside down American flag, it has always upset me.) And then some other articles say Sony recording artists...Anyway, Reiggin, thanks for the real answer. And Heykylmccarthy, thanks for the smarta** answer. I don't mind, I have good a sense of humor. Unless someone says something negative about my kid, I am not offended by much. (except the upside down American flag on a certain record label!)
