I'm a fan (and you should be too) because...
I met Scott Avett the day he moved into the apartment next door to me. I helped him get a few things into his crummy little cramped apartment, right next to my crummier little apartment. Two college kids with no money, and all the hopes and dreams of life still strong in our young hearts. The apartments we lived in were so msall, we talked to each other through the walls. He would yell at me to come over and check out his latest painting, and we spent several nights doing things college kids do.
Scott had a punk band back then called Nemo, and they were awesome. He and his brother also had a three piece bluegrass band that would play at the Courtyard on Sundays. So I'd go out drinking on a Saturday night and go watch my buddy screaming at the top of his lungs and diving off the stage.....never losing that old John Deere hat he wore during those shows, and get up the next morning, hung over, and go listen to him sing that sweet bluegrass music that tried to cleanse my soul.
I remember the day Scott got a call from somewhere, and he started packing up his things, because he was leaving to go on tour and make it big. He moved back home and I lost touch for awhile. I tried to catch him in Concord from time to time, but always was a day or two short. I always held on to my Nemo cd's and played them for everybody I met, as I was sure he was going to be big one day.
Fast forward ten years, and I have moved a few times with jobs, and wound up in Greensboro. I was having a soiree at my house one night, and one of my friends brother, Justin, came with her. I was playing my Nemo cd (yes, still), and he asked me who it was. I told him Nemo, and he said, "man, that sounds a lot like Scott Avett, only the music is different" I almost fainted......lol. I was like, "how do you know who Scott Avett is?" He went outside and came back with the first two Avett Brothers cd's, and we talked about music and I told him of old times Scott and I had, and he left me those two cd's. I thought I had lost a friend, only he came back to me musically. My how the world works.
I do not know Scott anymore, unfortunately. I have seen him again at a cd signing for Emotionalism, and talked to him about the old days, briefly. He is a busy man now, and I understand that, and I won't be a burden on him for his companionship, as his music is all the companionship I'll ever need.
The music put forth by Scott and Seth is, honestly, the most incredible music I have ever heard. The combination of the most incredible lyrical abilities with spectacular music makes the Avett Brothers my favorite band............EVER. The music is magical in its quality, its direction, and its message to the world. It breaks down the barriers of generations, and replaces those with a love for the world and each other. I applaud my old friend for what he has accomplished, and I look forward to seeing him again soon.
