The show on Sunday May 17, at Rancho Nicasio in Marin County, California felt like family affair. Perhaps it was the blankets-on-the-lawn seating or perhaps it was the kids running across the grass in front of the stage. It might have been the plates of barbecue chicken, beans and coleslaw or maybe it was the band taking the extra time to tell a story (Is Bob really ready for Scott to retire the banjo?). The near-100 degree temperature became insignificant as folks began dancing and clapping and when they played the gospel standard “I’ll Fly Away” I began to wonder if things could possibly improve. Indeed they did, with a monumental rendition of a song I’d been waiting nearly two years to hear live: “Smoke in Our Lights”.
