Big Top Chautauqua (Northern Wisconsin)

Big Top Chautauqua (Northern Wisconsin)

This was my second show (Milwaukee - Riverside was the first).

The setting was great. Big tent on a ski hill with trees and sky surrounding.

From what I gather, this tent/venue hosts a lot of folksy stuff throughout the year, and there were a lot of season ticket holders there (1/3 maybe?) with the rest being Avett fans. I'm going to take a wild guess and say 95% were Avett fans by the end. The other 5% are locals who I think were too smashed to remember. And that's being generous.

I'm eager for someone else to post the setlist because they played a song (the opener) that I've never heard before. I have it on film.

I haven't been to a lot of shows, but from what I gather, some of the noteworthy tracks we received:

At the Beach
Where have all the Average People Gone
Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms
And the opener....what was it called? HELP?

Besides some of the above, my personal highlights:

The boys dancing for a good minute after Kick Drum Heart (which I have on film as well).

Making me a fan of Tin Man.

Joe Kwon's bow strings were JACKED UP for the middle of the show. SOMEONE GET JOE a NEW BOW! This probably isn't that uncommon, but I thought it was neat.

Where Have All the Average People Gone is one of my new favorite songs. Don't kill me for asking, but is that song on an album? Why have I not heard this?

They made my night by closing the encore (after average people) with Laundry Room. THEY ROCKED THAT MOTHA OUT!

Great Show.

Songs I filmed (and will be youtubeified once I get back home):

The opener (still need help)
Average People (I'm glad I filmed this)
Kick Drum
Murder in the City
1 or 2 others that I'm forgetting.

I also recorded one song by The Elephant Revival - which I forgot to mention, were an awesome opener. VERY TALENTED. Love the lead singer. The fiddler. Oh my. Check them out as well.

EDIT: The opening song was Skin and Bones.

Thanks for the heads up on The Elephant Revival.

"Where Have All the Average People Gone is one of my new favorite songs. Don't kill me for asking, but is that song on an album? Why have I not heard this?"

It's a Roger Miller song.

"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."

Ahhhhh. Well I got it on tape.

The conncert was great. I was fortunate enough to have front row tickets, and great weather at the tent.

Special thank you to Jacob the drummer for taking my album up to the guys and getting vinyl cover signed by the guys.

This was the forth Avett concert Ive been too in this past year and was still impressed. I only wish that Scott would do Kick drum Heart without the new drummer (Sorry Jacob) It is something in AWE when Scott sings, plays the banjo and the kickdrum for the song.

Elephant Revival..excellent opener

I had my friends 9yr old with me and he spoke about Bonnie playing the Washboard,

He said to me she plays the washboard, the bongos, and those bells, i bet she could make a regular wash machine sound good...chuga chuga chuga

I could of ROFL literally at that moment.

It was great fun seeing all the people up North 15min from my home town experiencing the Avett Brothers.

Sounds like a great show! Joe's bow was totally shredded at Mountain Winery too - I love how he goes all out at every show.

Can't wait to see your videos, slickmick!!

This was my fourth show in the past four months - it's been amazing - but by far this was the best I've seen. Great venue...the Big Top is incredible and the crowd was so kind. I fell in love wtih Avett Brothers...again. My other three shows:

First Ave - yay!
Mesa, AZ - the first time I've ever flown halfway across the country because I just really, really needed to be at a show
Basilica Block Party, tonight...

I'm really tired Smiling

Good night, fellow fans! xoxo

Thank you, slickmick!! So great to see PG at the Airport, and really beautiful version of Average People - Scott looks so happy during the last verse.

Just want my heart to be true

I have a few more Avett vids to upload, but I uploaded one of Elephant Revival first:

Elephant Revival - Currach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDoLmLbn_Rk

Murder in the City - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpplKA37Tak

I know this one has been recorded to death, but my wife heard the opening bars and jabbed me. I knew what she meant. I guess it turned out nice due to the single spotlight on him. It's also later in the show, and he's a bit tired and mellow.

My wife also jabbed me for Head full of Doubt, which I had NO IDEA she liked. She doesn't sing any of the songs when I play them in the car. Anyways....I have that recorded but it's missing the first 7 seconds of the song. If anyone requests it, I'll upload that as well.

I still haven't uploaded - Paranoia and Kick Drum (which I thought had a lot of neat moments after watching the video)

Back to my wife, she blurted out a few lyrics while we were driving home. It made me smile. I also know she's a fan because when she has to explain to a friend or coworker what The Avetts sound like, she uses very glowing terms. But she's so heard to read because she doesn't show a lot of emotion or sing along with songs she likes (normally).

She mentioned something about next time we go to an Avett show..... So I think she's hooked. She just wont say it in plain language. : )

Kick Drum Heart - With Dancing : ) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDTNTU-BaHk

Paranoia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9gWFqQ_vbw - Should be up and running by 11 central time.

I think I'm done uploading. I must have filmed almost half the show. : )

It was a magical night. I can't stop watching Average People. Beautiful.

Last thought on the concert....and this might sound shallow. BUT I COULD NOT STAND SETH'S POLO. Maybe he was golfing before the show. He's still a rockstar. Golf polo or no golf polo.: )

Good Night Y'all

please make it stop - i can't control my hysterical laughing over the 'thumbs up for seth's dancing' caption. too funny. thanks for these.

...carrying with her the good things we know: a reason to live and a reason to grow, to trust, and to hold, and to care.

My fiance and I were there for the show as well. Isn't the location great? Intimate without feeling like a bar. Unique and surprisingly good acoustically. We loved it!

It was our first show. I've been a fan for years, but in college I way too broke to see any shows. The fiance, on the other hand, came into the situation almost AGAINST the music. He thinks (or should I say thought) all my music was a little too out of the box/hippy, but I'm slowly trying to convert him from his Nickelback ways. I think this show might have done it!

I can't even begin to pick a highlight moment of how magical it was! These guys have crazy energy on stage and the crowd definitely felt it. Like slickmick, I think I recorded at least half of the dang show, but I have yet to load them to youtube.

As far as the playlist goes, I was way to into the show to even take note, but I do know that the majority of the songs were off the latest album.

Also, Elephant Revival was pretty amazing. I had no idea what to expect, and they definitely impressed. Bonnie has a haunting voice. And that fiddler was a beast!

Only wish we could have gotten better seats, but in this venue almost every seat is good.

Sweet. Can't wait to see what you have.

My wife was kind of similar, but she definitely came around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1Kx9UNVgds - Head Full of Doubt / Road Full of Promise

Sorry about the first 7 seconds being gone. I wasn't going to record this, but my wife elbowed me as it was starting. So here's the last 95% of the song.

As a side note, I emailed some of the managers of The Big Top, and here's what one of them wrote me back:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking for myself, that was one of the favorite shows at the Tent. They’re even giving Arlo Guthrie a run for the #1 spot.

I’m hoping we can have them again, but groups like that tend to outgrow us when they really start taking off. We’ll do our best to have them back.

Jamey

I also saw this tweet by a fellow fan on twitter:
http://twitter.com/MRC58/status/18240285265

@MRC58 - Just met the lady who started Big Top Chautauqua. About 75. She said "Boy, that was something last night!" #AvettBrothers

I brought as many people as I could to see the band. ***The Big Top is an easy sell in this neck of the woods.
The result: A large number of complete converts ( of all ages). The only one with any qualifications was my 84 year old mother (yes, she insisted on going and was one of only a few who sat occasionally, but she was bouncing during Laundry Room) who liked "the slow songs better". Otherwise, absolute success and a wonderful evening.
I am pleased that slickmick e-mailed the managers. I will now do the same. TAB were a major success and I hope will be asked back. (And I hope they, in turn, will return. )

@slickmick That KDH is awesome!!!! Especially the dancing!!! It seems even more stepped up than usual, or is that just me? And yeah...polo shirt????/ Aaaarrggghhh....I'd rather he just go shirtless, or is that just me...?

Cindle, please upload your videos. : )

Sooo I know this is a HUGE stretch but I got my picture taken with the band and forgot to get the picture takers number!! Im the girl who had the broken ribs! ha if you see this I would love to get a copy of those pictures!! Thanks Smiling

this show was a wonderful night in northern wisconsin! smiling people, awesome weather and an intimate show with the avetts. we were fortune enough to have front row seats to one of finest avetts shows of my life!

Just watched all the vids... wasn't at this show, but sometimes I need to pass the time at work, and this is the best way I've found to do that! I enjoyed the videos, thanks. Still can't find any from the Detroit show I was at, wonder why?
And I wanted to stick up for Seth's shirt...lol. I noticed all the guys were wearing collared shirts, and you know how they like to cooridinate, I think he was just trying to fit in Eye-wink
