Chicago HOB 6/28

Another amazing show by The Avett Brothers. High energy as always (both The Avett Brothers and the crowd), and an excellent mix of older songs as well as upcoming songs from their new album. The feeling I get every time I see The Avett Brothers play is incomparable to any other, and of course tonight was no different. Thanks for an incredible concert!

Also, during "Murder in the City", did Scott sing "daughter" instead of "mother"? I didn't know he had a daughter, when did that happen? What wonderful news Smiling

My friend Matt shared this with me via text about tonite's show:

Sold out show, which is always awesome for the boys. Some die hard fans. Majority seemed new to the boys. For example, Denouncing, Dream Appointed, KDH and I&L&U had noticeably fewer sing-along fans. But I prefer that anyway. Eye-wink
Scott injected "make sure my daughter knows the same" in "Murder" which was a nice touch.
I was stuck behind the one giant in the place, but I shimmied around and made due. Great time.

The set list:

Signs
Die Die Die
I & Love & You
At the Beach
Bella Donna
Laundry Room
Paranoia in Bb Major
One Line Wonder
Down With A Glistening Shine
Talk on Indolence
Murder in the City
Denouncing November Blue
LOL, LOL
Ballad of Love & Hate
*Cover*: of Earl Scruggs "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms"
Salina
Kick Drum Heart
Dream Appointed (Another Youngster)
Go to Sleep

Encore:
The Perfect Space

I see the set list and kick myself for not going. I just couldnt make the drive home 5 hours to make it up and to work @ 8 for a "mandatory" meeting... THAT ISNT HAPPENING NOW!!! arrggh.

but i would have loved any set list... so...

"you're the words... in a song.. that Hoon sang to me...."

What an awesome show! After three years of being a huge fan, I finally got to see the Avetts LIVE!!! I will never again miss show within driving distance of my home in Toledo!!!! The day began with a rather eventful trip from Toledo to Chicago on the Megabus....We left some guy behind at a rest stop and had to loop back to pick him up -- adding an hour to the trip -- then had whirlwind trip from Union Station to Evanston and back downtown.
The House of Blues was a fantastic, packed venue (beer was expensive!) but when things got going the floor was bouncing along with all the wild, crazy fans. I was able to sing along with every song...even most of the new ones!

Rolling in my Sweet Baby's Arms???? I hope someone has a video!

Another great show! I think the crowd was about twice as big as the last time they played the House of Blues. (About a year ago.) I've put some photos online here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69672342@N00/sets/72157620588410707/. You can see the boys perform their new song Down With A Glistening Shine on YouTube. I really wish they'd find a new venue to play in Chicago.

I could use one more day to recover from last night. The new material works so well into the set list already.

What an amazing night. Every time a song started, kateb and I looked at each other with the "Is this really happening?!" look on our face. I could not have asked for a better set and the boys seemed to be having a great time too, which is always awesome.

hrg1: "Also, during "Murder in the City", did Scott sing "daughter" instead of "mother"? I didn't know he had a daughter, when did that happen? What wonderful news"

He does, she was born last October.

No, your beautiful smile don't help

Here is a video I got of "Roll in my sweet baby's arms" from the Southgate house in Kentucky a few years back...

Ohio...the Heart of it All

Vid for Bob playing trumpet w/Sam & the Shivs currently uploading to the link below - One Line Wonder to follow......Good to meet friends from the board Max, KateB, Alyx and AvettConvert - seeing the show with friends always makes it that much more special - thx folks! oh - and we met the guys who did the punk cover of Traveling Song - they were really cool guys....Sam & the Shivs were SPOT ON again - and I got a nice little shout out from Sam too....what a sweetheart. Personally, i thought the show lacked a little energy, but i've been spoiled lately.....and then the whole thing devolved into a disco when the curtains were drawn and "Thriller" came on....thx Marley & Betz, great trip! work, not so much fun on two hrs sleep, but worth it - especially now that we are being "deprived" of our October Ann Arbor show... Smiling Sad

Things change and get strange with the movement of time.
It's happening right now to you.

If the Beatles were from Appalachia instead of Liverpool, they might sound like the Avett Brothers – they were that good.

Of course another great TAB show. Nice to meet other msg boarders - marley, chrisvant - and to bring a first-timer along. She LOVED it and said it was soooo much better than she was expecting (she had not listened to much Avett music before the concert). Laundry Room was her favorite Smiling

I was the banner carrier for this show. Pete said that unfortunately the balconies were such that he couldn't hang it. However, he was able to show it to the band again, and they appreciated it. Now it's in Chris & Marley's hands for the Detroit show.

Definitely wasn't expecting Signs for the opening song - a nice treat. This was the last of my 3-show run for June. 2,556 miles and totally worth it. My next show isn't til late September Sad Oh well, hopefully it will be here before we know it. And the new album, too!!

one regret (besides security) - not meeting chicago_sailor or the irishgal - sorry guys, didn' know if i was going til last minute! sound familiar to anyone? anyone? is there math involved in this equation?

Chris, I think that's long division you've got there regarding your last minute calculations and such. Sticking out tongue
I'mma stick to my country math 'n just guess that you didn't shoot any vid last nite because it's against the rules at the HOB.

oh there's vid allright, despite sic'ing their finest upon me - even security guard #74 (MY Team Avett #!!! who i made buds with standing inline befo the sho) pounced and tried to take it. .........plz, no more COUNTRY MATH!!!! Calc & Trig fine, Hillbilly Gizinta's i will pass on.....and just what is that anyway? a dare? is my mentor goading me into spilling the goodies from that night??? Smiling

I am still riding high from this show. Made the trip from Concord, NC to Chicago for the weekend to visit my girlfriends family- no question a great decision to stick around for the show. I felt like I had been transported back in time to a Carolinas shows about 5 years ago. The crowd didn't know all the songs, showed respect and remained quiet at the right times, and danced their faces off as much as possible. It was definately a lower key show- perfect for a Sunday night. Every song that they played, I turned to my girlfriend and said it couldn't possibly get better, and yet it did.
There was some family of the boys at the show, and it was fun to watch their faces fill with pride watching the night unfold. I found myself watching the crowd as much as the band, and I felt very proud at how far they had come. I talked to some folks in the crowd before the show and loved hearing where everyone had driven from.
Before the show, there was a presentation backstage of a flag that had been flown in TAB's honor thanks to their contribution to American music. I think that it was NY congressman that had recognized them. Very cool.
Still too much to absorb. My girlfriend got some pretty good photos- I'll try to post them asap.
PS- The band loves you Chicago, and now even more so- I convinced Dane that they should hit up Giordano's today for some deep dish pizza while they enjoyed a day off. I got a picture message of the Giordano's sign with the caption "going for it!" this afternoon. I'm sure they weren't disappointed!

SOO FUN THIS SHOW WAS.

i went with kateb and alyx, this was my first of many avett shows.

when the girls told me how intense it was gonna be i didn't believe them. BOY WAS I WRONG.

cant wait for the next show.

mat.

as everyone said, it was a great show. so nice to finally meet chris! the carolina bbq beforehand was also a nice treat. the boys who threw the event were super nice.

can't wait til october!

Anyone from the Toledo area interested in riding / carpooling up to Detroit to see the Avetts on Thursday night...please contact me! I'm so psyched to see them again...the venue is only about an hour or so drive from my home. Nothing cooler than to roll to the show with other crazy Avett Fans!!! Contact me at: slightfoot@ts4arts.org

I loved the live version of "I And Love And You". The piano on the recorded version is odd. Anyone else agree?

Great to finally meet Chris, Marley, Betz, KateB and Alyx, Dudes who did the punk cover and my neighbors from across the alley (who I happened to be standing next to :-0 Small world this big city ).

Had a really nice group of people around me up front.

I Really enjoyed the show. A lot of slow solo songs mixed with some real high energy stuff. They are always so good and their abilities just keep getting better. All the new stuff is so good. And Glistening Shine is just...yeah its awesome.

Also there was an amazing poster for sale. We had no idea there was gonna be one. I'll post a pic one I have a chance to snap it. Poster people, post on here if you are making a poster for our sake and yours. Found a pic: http://www.subjectmatterstudio.bigcartel.com/product/the-avett-brothers-...

Cheers.

Yeah, I want a poster!! Max, it was great to meet you as well!

As for the punk band (from Alaska!) who covered "Travelin' Song," they are good friends with my boyfriend's friends. Very small world indeed!

"one regret (besides security) - not meeting chicago_sailor or the irishgal - sorry guys, didn' know if i was going til last minute! sound familiar to anyone? anyone? is there math involved in this equation?"-Chrisvant

Sorry I was unable to meet you as well. Sad Were you at the preparty? I have to agree with kateb, who I don't believe I met either, that carolina bbq was amazing and the sweet tea vodka was a little to delicious....needless to say we went hunting for a few bottles of that stuff and to our suprise found some! Cookouts will never be the same, thanks boys! Smiling

The show was amazing and the crowd was at least twice as large as the last show at the HOB last year. Love when everyone is jumping around and even if you aren't at the moment the floor will make you.

One line wonder- Seth " I guess I could have made a mew...few mistakes...just like that one" Crowd cheers and Seth laughs. Classic! Smiling

irishgal, surprised i didn't meet you at the bbq! we got there a little after four and left a little after 5:30. must have missed each other! and that firefly was pretty darn good, which says a lot coming from a girl who doesn't drink and doesn't like the taste of alcohol.

Max! Chris! I'm glad we all got to meet. I think we made the brothers proud by properly rocking out all along the front. And Chris - where are all the awesome pictures of Kate's floating head and me hiding? Eye-wink

Kateb - Irishgal20 and I got there just after 5:30... traffic from down south was horrible because of the taste. We'll have to meet up next time.

The show was great, but as expected the boys are slowing down. I wonder if they ever miss the days of the old van and trailor? We were stuck next to a *charming* group of high school kids who were more concerned about passing around a can of Miller Light than they were with watching the show. Irishgal had to keep reminding me it's illegal to hit minors. Such is life. Amazing setlist. I truly love "Laundry Room".

For me, the treasure of the night was Samantha Crain. I wasn't familiar with her before Sunday night, and I haven't been as blown away by an opening act since I saw Langhorne open for the boys at my first Avett concert. She and her band were incredible!

I have to sincerely thank Jonathan, Mel, and everyone else who threw the BBQ. I don't know too many people who would be willing to open their homes to strangers. It was great meeting everyone and I can't wait until next time!

Sailor - i felt the same way about the show - Bros seemed to slow down, Sam & the Shivs brought it - that Confiscation EP is phenomenal - (side note : one of the openers in Portland was Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside - get their EP if you can find, you won't be disappointed - Scott told me last night he was having her open up a few shows for them later this summer or early fall out east) - anyway, i felt the same after the Grand Rapids show too ........so TWO shows in a row (for me, the did 7 in between those dates) that the opener seemed to have more energy than the Bros???? at least the Bros we know and love are used to.........then last night in Detroit happened. It was as if a hurricane had hit.......you could tell 30 seconds into the show that Scott was on fire and the band followed suit.....for the whole night it was electric. I think what happened in GR was some appeared a little under the weather, and the weather itself was 90 +. Chicago they had just done 8 show in 11 days or something to that affect. I would have a little less too.......four days off was apparently all each band member needed. Again, it was Scott who led the charge and didn't let up - it was, to say the least, incredible - a fitting way to end this run of six shows, likely not seeing the guys til next year. I think i might just use this for my review as i am still sleepy from the ride home last night, and Josh needs a nap to be able to see the fireworks tonight, uh, tomorrow....happy 4th everyone!

Are any of you thinking of hitting the Iowa City concert. I went to college at Uof Iowa...go Hawks!....and i'm really thinking about heading down there! The Englert is a great venue!!
