decide what to be and go be it.
I'm especially excited about seeing/hearing Cadillac Sky, Steep Canyon Rangers, The Kruger Brothers, Any group Doc Watson is playing with... Saturday night at the Watson stage looks especially good. Lots of jams with Doc followed by Steep Canyon Rangers (w/ Steve Martin), followed by Elvis Costello.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Kruger Bros at 1:30 for some serious pickin' and harmony. They are classically trained musicians from Switzerland who came to NC to study bluegrass from Doc Watson. They do not disappoint. Besides... it's two Brothers, one on banjo and one guitar with a friend on bass. Sound familiar?

It’s more fun than a week at Betty Ford.
I can't wait! I'm going for Sunday only, and if we get to see Doc Watson, Jim Avett, The Wilders, and then the Avetts, it will be a day well spent.

NastyNate: Great profile pic. As fate would have it, I watched that particular episode of the Little Rascals ("Teacher's Beau") last night. A classic.
We're getting our camping gear together for Merlfest. My wife and I are taking all eight kids from Chicago to NC for it, camping along the way (ages range from 17 to 2 -- all of them Avett fans).

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
So, forecast for Sunday is isolated thunderstorms in Wilkesboro. Could that day of the festival/TAB's set be cancelled if it actually happens and is lightning?
You are giving the National Weather Service way too much credit. . I don’t put much faith in any forecast that's’ is more than 48 hours away. I am willing to bet that Sunday forecast will change several times between now and this weekend. That said I have experienced one very bad storm sweep through Merlefest. (right when Ruthie Foaster was hitting the stage) It caused some disruption but did not shut things down. The show usually goes on rain or shine.

Whoop! I was hoping the answer would be "rain or shine." And I do know how fickle the weather can be... I live in Georgia. Snow one day, 70 degrees the next! I guess I just want to be sure that I can experience the Avetts.
I would keep a check on wilkesweather.com, it's local, and usually right. Weather.com is always wrong for me, in my area atleast!
Thanks, Lauren!
sunday is exactly right... i'll begin preparing / packing for the weather on Thursday.... the weather forecast will be all over the place.... also, if it rains, Mountain showers usually don't last too long - so it should by no means ruin the day...

Yep, that was the Austin Stage. We were close to the stage when the first lightening hit pretty close during Ruthie's third song. Her eyes got big and she said something like "Well, I guess they will let me know if we should stop", then.......BOOM!....and the whole hill emptied.

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."
From MerlFest's FB Page - The Avett Brothers: "We have attended MerleFest, as fans and as performers, since 1994. There is not a finer or more welcoming music festival in the country... MerleFest offers four days of absolute quality for the music-loving family. For us, in terms of performance, it's very much like coming home."
MERLEFEST..... LET'S GO!!!!

"I'm a little nervous 'bout what you'll think when you see me in my swimming trunks."
I have been every year to Merlefest since the beginning (grew up in Wilkesboro) and by far, it is the best outdoor festival I have ever been too, yes, I may be impartial. I will be there only for Sunday because my 8 year old daughter finally is able to join us! She listens to the cds with me and I'm excited about broadening her mind with other music acts.
haven't heard a bad thing about the festival yet... thanks tttonka...
with your experience - where would you advise someone in their 20's who probably likes to play music / party a bit more than your typical family? I am staying over at River's Edge but didn't know much about the camping facilities, etc... just wondering- I heard Sewerfest was a good spot, too...
any advice you could provide would be helpful... thanks!

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
I actually have not camped there in about 5 years, but the few times I did, River's Edge was where I went. The 'partying' consisted of sitting around drinking and listening to people (or yourself) play music. You could feel the love and peace all around, well, that may have been due to fact of good smelly stuff going around.
You will love it!! And enjoy...
great... thanks!

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
I stayed at river's edge and it was a great experience. I was definitely a lot younger than most of the people staying there, as I was 17 at the time, but people came right up to me and were chatting me up and jamming with me all weekend. I highly recommend it. There is also a shuttle that leaves from there every few minutes and getting out was a cinch.

decide what to be and go be it.
Although I most likely will not be at Merlefest, I am glad to hear some of you talk about The Wilders. They are from here in KC and very well-loved.
Taking my boys -- ages 5 and 7 -- to their first concert Sunday at Merlefest. I can't tell you how excited my wife and I are to see The Avett Brothers for the first time with our boys -- our "Brothers." It will be a memory our family will never forget. Thanks, Scott, Seth, Bob, and Joe, for the music you make and the people you are!
We're leaving after work today- 5 hour drive. So excited. We haven't been in two years so it's long overdue. Drew... we are going to try to stay at Sewerfest. I tried to make reservations a few weeks ago but that had already stopped taking them. I was going to try to get jpegg's tickets for River's Edge but you beat me to it. We stayed at Sewerfest a couple years ago and there were tons of jam sessions and great friendly people. We met a lot of people we still stay in touch with that year. You should head on over there if you get a chance.
what are the chances that benmont tench plays with the avetts for a couple songs? he is in WPA, right? and they are playing right before the avetts.

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."
Have fun everybody! I have an iPhone app where I have a view of N. Wilkesboro on streaming video. Great to see the tents up and tons of activity! Excited for you all.

May you never be embarrassed to sing.
ducksoup, what's the app?
Mia, it's a sweet little app called Live Cam (Barry Egerter) for 99cents. There are free apps too, but I don't know if they have the same camera choices. You can go through and select favorites (give yourself some time to do this - lots of pages). When I saw N. Wilkesboro I added immediately and have been watching it for a few months with no action. Today it exploded! Also added Kill Devil Hills, NC, where I can see a monument in the distance with occasional cars speeding by... just cause it's the boys' state... I have a lot of Italy and other int'l cities. Goat cam is cute. And I got to see zebras at a watering hole in S. Africa, and other times elephants and caribou. Another fave is sushi cam. With this app I can watch the sun go down in Italy or Greece or The Netherlands and, if I'm awake, watch it come up in every time zone from NY to MN, ID, CA, Hawaii. It's helped me through some sleepless nights and too-early morning rises.

I need a ticket, if anyone has an extra let me know. Thanks
Headed up Sunday with the hubby. Never been- definitely excited. Couple questions for some of you who have been before-
1. I assume parking is free/included in ticket? Just haven't seen anything that says otherwise. Know to go to Blue Lot for shuttle, etc.
Can we put our chair/blanket down when we arrive to "hold" our spot?
2. Also assume cash is a good idea as opposed to debit card. Are the food vendors inside the festival reasonable or is everything super pricey?
3. I know we can't bring in alcohol or glass but can we bring in other food/drinks?
4. How early should we get a spot in GA for TAB? Not concerned with being at the front, but would like to just have a decent spot- like not at the way very back
Thanks for the help! Looking forward to it! Hopefully the rain stays away!
