This is my favorite version of In the Curve
So I've got the basics figured out. I can play a very basic version with the opening picking and chords. I really like the "freestyle" picking he does before each verse though. I've tried to figure it out, but I'm just not good enough without tabs in front of me. Any help?

I know a riff he often uses (after the normal riff) is
-0---------------------
----3p0-----0--------
-----------2------2p0
------------------------
------------------------
------------------------
which leads right back into the normal riff again.
and then of course the usual "Avett hammer-ons" that you hear in almost all of their songs, lol.
It's easier than it sounds. Playing G (with middle finger on top string) move your index finger down one string. Play the note then pull off your finger to play the second note then play the fourth string down open also. Then move your finger back to the second string down (still in G) and repeat using the pull-off to strum the note open.
Hope that helps a little. If I could post a video from my iPhone I could show you.
This PDF from my Avett music archive might be helpful (the picking is tabbed out):
