need advice from banjo players

i'm looking at a banjo for my son who is 14. it's a deering goodtime at a pawn shop for $299 with a soft case. i've been told that this is a good deal since it's in fine shape. is this a good choice for a beginner who already plays guitar?

I would wait until he is 25.

But seriously I don't know.

I would say yes. I just got the same banjo and I have played guitar for years. I'm not sure what my wife paid for mine, but I know she got a really good deal, and mine looks brand new. I know it retails for close to $700 new, so as long as it's in pretty good shape, I'd say go for it. If you're not Guitar/banjo savvy, maybe take someone with you who is to check it over. You don't want a lemon...

good luck!

the goodtime at that price is your best bet.

seems a little pricey, but you've got the right model, so just shop and compare prices.
