WOW. They went pretty light on I and Love and You, and went with Let Myself Live, Jenny and the Summer Day, Sanguine, PG from Michigan/Telling Time, and Never Been Alive instead?! And all for a great cause? I'm in awe.

Hope someone was taping, and that everyone who was able to go had a fabulous time Smiling Can't wait to hear about this one.

ETA: I love that they went all out for a benefit show. They (not surprisingly) continue to amaze me.

wait... is Telling Time/Can You Not See now called PGfMichigan, or was it a new PG into TT?

Same song three names

Holy crap, awesome setlist!! So happy for everyone there! (and a wee bit jealous, too.) I wrote this on fb but I have to share it on here as well - on 8.6.10 my brother wrote this to Joe via Twitter:

"@joekwon80 hey get those guys in that band you're in to re-learn a song called Jenny and the summer day..."

Also, I'm 90% sure I know why they played Let Myself Live. Anyway, as lovelikethemovies said, can't wait to hear details Smiling

Same song three names

oh my, you guys hit the jackpot there.
Thanks for the setlist and the clarification.

avettconvert, that's awesome your brother helped make this happen! And please spill it on Let Myself Live Smiling

lovelikethemovies,
Haha, who knows if Joe even saw that tweet, but it's still fun to speculate. As for Let Myself Live, a friend of mine who is also a dear friend of the band was in attendance tonight and he really digs that song, which is why I wouldn't be surprised if they played it for him/with him in mind Smiling

ETA: Ok, suspicion officially confirmed... received word from the source himself.

Aw, that's awesome they played it for him. I love that song, and this setlist was RIDICULOUS.

And let's just choose to believe your brother made it happen Smiling

nice! thank him for us, barbara!

seth said they've been playing around with JatSD for a while, and it was just the perfect time and place to play it...because it was a show where they could essentially just do whatever they wanted!

...but i'm sure your brother's tweet didn't hurt. Eye-wink

oh, and i'm sure someone else will expound later, but for the encore, bob came out carrying scott piggyback, scott carrying a towel in his mouth. he then got down and stage dove. he's got the stage-divin' fever these days!

also, i have a few vids i'll be posting to youtube soon!

Will do, Marissa! And yay for vids! Love the piggyback story...looking forward to hearing more.

ill with want.

that is all.

shoot me now.

DAMN! I missed Sanguine :*( I should have been in Portland. I can only hope they pull it out again in Huntington, WV in Oct. Great setlist! Wish I would have been there!

What a nice set.
When did Telling Time pick up the Pretty Girl From Michigan name? This is the first I have heard of that. I thought Scott had put that question to rest.

I hate you guys.

They sure do go all out for The Crystal Ballroom.

I also hate y'all and I'm not even going to try to hide it.

Well done PDX - that set is all kinds of love

JATSD????? Oh man!!!! And, yeah, what up witht he "PGF Michigan? Not that I would not LOVE that...being a Michigander and all!!! Maybe they have retitled it for an upcoming release...

I am in awe of that setlist. I'm hoping for some great videos - especially Jenny and the Summer Day! And personally I'm dying to see PGF Chile. I hope you guys appreciate how lucky you are!

Especially considering the opening act that you guys had on top of it.

What is Never Been Alive? I haven't had the pleasure of hearing this one yet! What's it like?! Was tonight the first night they played it?

ps. I was just thinking yesterday how I would absolutely love to hear Jenny and the Summer Day live and just a couple days ago some friends and I were talking about how we wish we could hear some songs off their first album....SO JEALOUS!

What an amazing night!! I still can't put into words what that show was like...

As far as the PGF Michigan thing, that's what was written on the setlist on stage. The setlist said "PGF Michigan (Can You Not See)" ... I guess they can't figure out what the heck the name of that song is... Also, this time it was really slow and jazzy. Not sure if they've played it that way before, but it was very different from any version I've seen/heard.

Oh and, Never Been Alive is one they debuted last April I think. They've prolly played it 10-15 times live now. It's a pretty cool song with Scott on keys and Seth on guitar.

holy crap. i am so jealous. amazing set.

Holy crap indeed. THIS is why I don't ever look at setlists for shows I don't go to. I'm insanely jealous. Let Myself Live?!?! Jenny And The Summer Day?!?! GAH.

We also got a pre encore stage dive...it was a nice touch.

They really pulled out some oldies. Lucky bastards.

My vote is pg from michigan. Scoots played it for me down in urbana...i cover it constantly....all of us former and current michigan residents would/are honored if in fact this title sticks.....oh yea, best set list i have seen to date, any concur? Sorry if this posts multiple times, phone not good w/captchastika's

jeremy... don't hate me.

Chris, that's very cool re: Pretty Girl from Michigan! i, too, hope that title sticks seeing as it's so significant to the avett fan base in your part of the world.

Never Been Alive was a perfect song to play last night
Opening line: ""Money won't do the trick, but it will help to open the doors we need it to, to help someone else... Still we won't need it, to turn things around... I've never been alive (whoa oh oh) I've never been alive (whoa, swoony Seth whoas) like I am now""
I saw this in Mayvett 2009 in Santa Cruz, and I'm pretty sure it's not going to be a released song, so....I'll post a link

Also, regarding last nite's show in general, um, whoa!!!!!!!
:jawdrop:      :puzzled:  :barf:   :jawdrop: :-D

Another huge highlight of the night for me was Seth joining Langhorne for Sweet Olive Tree. Not sure if this is the right thread to post this in, but here's the video I got of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h54VxKBKMDA&hd=1

What an amazing night... I'm still trying to process it. Woke up this morning still grinning from ear to ear. Smiling

Will anyone be writing a review? I humbly bow down to the amazing board members in the front row to be given such an honor. I still can't find words to describe last night.

Also, for the few of us that got to go the memorable private KINK performance, the pictures are up now:
http://www.kink.fm/pages/8034579.php?imageGalleryXRefId=2003297#imgXR

Got to meet so many wonderful people at both places.....such a perfect day!

Seth and Langhorne did Sweet Olive Tree too?!! It's high on my wishlist, and I've yet to even get Langhorne as an opener. So thrilled for those of you who were able to be there, but man, I am filled with envy Smiling

Thanks for the great video, allieinpdx! And Chrissydee, how did you get into the KINK performance? Love all the pictures with all 4 of the guys, especially the ones where Seth is leaning towards the camera.

Nice review here: http://www.oregonlive.com/music/index.ssf/2010/08/live_review_the_avett_...

"But if you're talking about the best live shows in 2010, and you don't talk about the Avett Brothers, you haven't seen the Avett Brothers."

Chrissy, I want to encourage you to summon the words... It can be tough sometimes, but it's a great process to go through after you've seen a show like we did last night. I'll probably be writing a review in the next few days, but I have to let it marinate for a bit, plus I'm at work today on about 4 hours sleep so I'm not sure how coherent I can be. Anyway, this was a special special night that should be documented in many ways, and multiple reviews is one of those ways.

You're very welcome, lovelikethemovies! Here's Swept Away from last night, too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqrP23tyHVY&hd=1

We were at the KINK performance yesterday morning and told them that Swept Away was our wedding song and asked if they would play it at the show later that night... and they did! We got a chance to thank them after the show and Seth replied "Aw, we were hoping you guys were here to hear it. We played it for you." Not sure they'll ever know how much it meant to us.

PS... the sound quality gets a little touch and go because we were right in front of Bob and the camera was trying to adjust for the volume from the bass. Sorry!

will you be my friend?---Busted Avett Cherry last night in Portland!*!*!*(^) Ballroom floor envelopes and lauches fortunate feet into a night of cathartic love, joy pain and sorrow. Yes there was a set list and I think it is as accorate as any. I am not sure yet what happened last night as I am trying to figure out who this band that woke up in my hotel room is and if I want them to be there when I get out of the shower of if I dare ask them to stay for coffee or perhaps another show? I think I waited 48 years for last night to happen yet I have felt this way before and was decieved by the scent of the night and a dream of the morning light that would rise for the rest of my life. Yes there was show and I remember way too much to trust these memories to the definitions of the written word. Perhaps on the road to vegas I can translate my experience into words as of now I am still trying to slow the tears and cover 500 miles wihtout having to stop every 50 miles and dance. I-5 calls my name and WI-FI eats my brain-perhaps we shall meet again down this mean old highway--Sin City awaits if you can ever escape CANNAIbis county--in the STATE OF JEFFERSON--USA--If you are confused stop at a few rest stops along the road and read one or two of those old rusted plaques tell the story of what we are living and dying for these days--unless of course you live or die for a new car, perpetual youth and the illusion of relevancy.--(Sin city is your Mecca--as a side note if your are in Vegas and wan to be bigger than Jesus Christ I can arrange it for about 5,000.00--a true bargain if you think about it-let me know what you need to be bigger than Jesus and I can make it haqppen--really!!! GOOGLE JEFFERSON COUNTY and look for me in Vegas--if I do not arrive I have been apprehended by the FED's or have returned to active duty wiht the Tom Horne Cavalry--Look in the PIMA COUNTY JAIL where they do not have camera's--these places exist--I have been beaten in them--SB 1070?????????????

Decide what to be and go be it

There was a dream and one day I could see it-----

Josh and Dylan's DAD

I'm confused. Jealous... but confused.

I'd never be mad at you Barbara.

So that Jenny Song was something special huh? I have never heard it before and it ........................well it did somehting ---I have to admit I was without a partner and spent part of the song the dancing witb this Jenny--a sweeter girl exists no where in these lands outside of my immagination. I have read the other replys so my thoughts are foreveer corrupted by those who know more than I about what I experienced last night. So what was that country boy song called? I still had chicken s*** flaking off my shoes when I hit the ballroom so this song deserves a little more investigation--I am still looking for a theme song---So I guess my next questionis is do they do this every night or did I just get lucky(___).
I am also CONFUSED------- at this point and am driving south in search of clarity as I did not find it driving north. When I left Vegas I was struggling with the words to describe the night at the colloseum that had just transpired. (reviews are available at BOBLINKS.com)--the reviews are interesting, beautiful and irrelevant all at the same time. Ther must be multiple truths as I was at these shows also-Yet Forgetful Heart seems to be a mystery to us all at this point. If the tour ever ends you can not say it did not come to your city--you were just too bust watching TV or ??????????????? to care. Yet perhaps you have choosen to ignore the oracle as he is managed by the mystery and you would prefer to c=dance than be paralyzed by his presiously gurarded and ill spoken words. How does it feel?? Or do you really feel? Or do the brothers feel for you? ---and if the brothers feel for you at least you know the feelings exist!!! and if you feel them they are real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dance,Dance ,Dance all night long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!s*** I still have not even made it to eUGENE YET--OH WELL i KNOW MORE NOW THAN I DID WHEN I LEFT PORTLAND--

lOVE
jOSH AND dYLAN'S daD

not only was this the best avett brothers show i have ever seen, but it was hands down the best concert i have ever seen. their energy was so raw and incredible. scott appeared to be in some kind of energetic trance that was truly magical. their interactions on stage and with the audience were so amazing. when they played telling time and let myself live i almost died. and please pardon yourself is my favorite song of all time so that got me pretty jazzed. that was a night never to be forgotten!

@lovelikethemovies-the KINK special performance was a contest that you entered through the their website, only 43 people were chosen, and they got to bring 1 guest only. I didn't get chosen, but hooked up with someone who won, and could not find anyone to go with her. I think she was a little overwhelmed at the passion of the band's followers, (she only knew 2 songs they sang), but she was quite impressed how far people travel to see them, and really impressed by how polite the band was and how good they sounded. They played 3 songs, and had a great interview that was cut quite short on the webcast. They should be having video of it posted very soon...I'll post the link. All I know, is that we were the luckiest people in town that morning....it was amazing.

@timdog-thank you for the encouragement! I will gather my thoughts too....I just can't find the words right now to express just how special it was. And it was great meeting you in line at KINK!

I think someone's on more than just an Avett high...

Sanguine, Sweet Olive Tree duet, and swoony Seth whoas. Dagger in my heart.
(But thrilled for all who were there.)

I'm so freakin jealous. I wish they would put that song into their regular rotation. In fact, why not put it on an album. They have been playing it since 05. "Telling Time" that is. I want to see "Sanguine" live as well.

Good vibrations.

@katminelli, that might explain my confusion... I dunno...

Does anyone know more about "Portland Town"? A quick Google search pulls up a few different artists, with Woody Guthrie presumably being the original writer of the song. They took a few liberties with the lyrics, but then again, that's not very unusual for them when doing covers. Surprised no one has mentioned this, since I believe it would be the first time they've covered it. I guess we're all just too excited about these older songs Smiling

Justin said he thought it was a traditional song if that helps.
Not only was the setlist amazing, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen that kind of frenetic energy from them--well, it certainly is up there, at least--probably the best Tin Man and Head Full of Doubt. I can't believe they stood still long enough to sing into the mics.
And the first time in over 20 shows that I didn't see January Wedding.
Sanguine was my top wishlist song, and JATSD wasn't even on my list b/c I thought there was no way they'd ever play it.
Seth and Langhorne on Sweet Olive Tree to start his set was also a wishlist song.
It was awe-inspiring, beginning to end.

Jeremy, awesome poster, thanks!

The show truly felt like a gift and I am beyond grateful for it.

And I miss my PDX (and fellow PDX-traveller) family already!
