Wow...I can't wait!
I'm interested to hear this. I wonder if their parts were recorded while he was still alive or added later? It seems like there would have been some mention of this had it happened when he was alive.
This is amazing. I love the American series...Hopefully its as powerful of a pair up as that cover with Bonnie Prince Billy in American III.
and Blasto, surely the Avett portion was recorded later down the road.
WHAT AN HONOR!
I know they have had many highlights over the years and hopefully many more to follow.
But what can top being able to say "I appeared on a Johnny Cash record"?
Congrats, guys.
However I am a little concerned about the "worthiness" of this album, for lack of a better term. The first 4 AR releases were incredible testaments to the artist, the songs, and the producer. I did feel that although the performances got better, the songs being selected for recording were less inspiring ("Hurt" one of the obvious exceptions). I like Vol V, but it's hard to listen to because of the mediocre song choices and the frailty of Cash's voice. It's like listening to Warren Zevon's last album whereas I would like to enjoy it more but it's hard to do so hearing how weak his voice sounds.
I heard they were gonna release ANOTHER one last year and had my doubts on whether that would be a good idea. I was under the impression that the "Unearthed" boxset contained what was left and worthy of the man's legacy, but apparently not. Surprisingly, some of the BEST recordings from this era in Cash's career are on that boxset and it would have been a fitting closure. I hope this one last career note isn't a sour one.
On a related note, I also love me some Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy). Cash's cover of "I See A Darkness" with Oldham on background is beautiful. That's a great album too, however I've always loved "Ease Down The Road" if only for the opening track. Many fans list that as one of their least favorite albums by him although it was the album that followed "I See A Darkness", so it goes to show you don't ever know ...
Bonnie Prince Billy also appears on the song "Lowlight" from Wrinkle Neck Mules second album "Pull The Brake" which is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. Oldham has also recorded with artist as diverse as Charlie Louvin, Sun Kill Moon, and Bjork.
Speaking of WNM...not only do they have a new album (although I recommend starting with their first album and progressing in order) but 3 very rare shows coming up. One in Charlottesville VA, their hometown of Richmond VA, and the county seat of God's Country, Asheville NC. Yet another reason why this is a good place for a music fan to live.

I agree, absolutely. One of my favorites of the series.
I'm so stoked for this, though. I've been wondering when this was going to be released.
Can't wait.

there's only one thing here worth hoping for
Master and Everyone is my favorite Bonnie Prince Billy album (Im sure im not the only one that says this). It was my first cd of his and I will never get over the almost howl like sound in Hard Life. I did love the vocals on that April disk with Sun Kil Moon (aka Mark Kozelek) though.
Was it you TAFKAM that was saying Johnny Cash had covered Ryan Adams - In My Time of Need with the intention of putting it on one of the American recordings? I remember reading it months ago on a ryan adams thread...
this is such an honor. can it get better than this? yeah probably.....
I'm kinda freaking out. This is HUGE!

American IV is one of my favorite albums. Very exciting.

Rejoice always, Mark
Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm believe Rick Rubin added The Avett Brothers to the track after Cash died. Cash died in 2003, and Rubin hadn't heard of the Avett Brothers until Emotionalism came out. I wonder if they sing or just musically accompany him.

Wow, that's awesome. I would love to hear Johnny Cover that R. Adams song too!

I'm like my grandma: short, but I stand tall, playing every card that's dealt to me. Some days are aces, and some days are faces, and some days are twos and threes.
Apparently, back in 99 at a show in Chapel Hill (at the Local 506) Ryan Adams said, “This is a song I wrote for Johnny Cash’s new record, but he’s really sick, so I don’t know if he’s gonna sing it or not.” in reference to In My Time of Need. Not sure if that's true or what frame of mind Ryan was in at the time, but it's cool to think about.

Team Avett #36
lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?
I'm really looking forward to this. And it comes out two days before my next Avett show, so I guess I'll have some new music to listen to while driving.

This is tremendous, very impressive. I can't imagine how they must feel after listening during their formative years, to Johnny Cash and others of his stature, to grow up and actually participate in his final album. Who would've dreamed?
