Does anyone happen to know what type of banjo pick up Scott uses? or if anyone uses a banjo pick up, what type do you recommend?

na, he dosent use a fishman rare earth. He actually believe it or not use the cheap $20 lapel mics from radio shack. They are mounted under the head tied to the rod on the inside pointing toward the resonator. Like scott I have tried lots of banjo pickups and this one works the best. I play bluegrass banjo but also do some strumming and with the transducer pickups and things of that nature once you start to dig in the sound goes to crap but the lapel mic will sound pretty good if you run it through a good d.i. But anyways I found a pretty cool banjo pick up online and I think I am going to switch to this. www.kavanjo.com
I sent the link to justin so maybe scott will be using these as well soon.
i'm sure...

well I have played each of scotts banjos within the past year and talked to justin about what all kind of pickups he is using and for now its the lapel mic.
oooh, banjo fight!

I might miss the meaning, but I’m catching the truth
tma has the overwhelming edge in posts, but hlr is holding a banjo in his avatar. This could be a good one.
I do like tma's attempt to go for the quick kill and 25 points - "Sorry I just killed your thread." hlr did not fall for it though.

hahahaha. I have been reading the boards for a few years now I just only usually post when people are talking about instruments.
Hmmm... That's interesting hlr... I don't doubt that he may have somehow used a lapel mic at one point recently - like when he first started touring with his white-headed banjo. Maybe he was waiting on a new pickup.
Everything I've seen from Scott has him plugging in to a 1/4 inch jack which would suggest he is using a pickup
(not a little mic). I don't know how you can plug in to a $20 lapel mic from Radio Shack.
Plus, when you're signed to a major label you can have nicer things, like a nice pickup for your banjo...
Maybe I'm wrong...
...but I don't think so.

when you get a lapel mic from radio shack it does have a headphone jack on the end of it but what you do is cut the headphone jack off and solder a 1/4 inch jack to it. I have also seen these pick ups on the black headed banjos and the white headed banjos and he has been using them for years now. If anyone has a close up picture of one of scotts banjos you may be able to see the on off switch mounted to the flange of it. It is not a matter of needing a cheap pick up that is just what works best for him. If you tried a fishman rare earth pickup or any under bridge transducers and strum hard like he does you will understand why they wont work, they start to distort and sound like crap.
Fair enough... Good explanation. I thought you were joking at first.

Just for the record... I read in an interview that Scott uses (or used at the time) Fishman Rare Earth pickups...
So I wasn't just pretending to know.

i might be at Railroad earth, I want to go to bassnectar as well
i would have told anyone who asked that he used rare earth. that is amazing. ive been struggling with a banjo pickup for years.
yea lightening, give it a shot. Maybe I will take the resonator off my banjo and take some pictures so you can see how it is rigged. The only downside is that it has a battery powered on off switch that will die if you leave it on.
Extremely interesting and helpful. Banjo pick ups are a pain. I'll give it a try! Thank you HLR!!!

I need to put a pick up in my banjo and if this works, it would save me a lot of money.
Thanks.
hlr,
it would be cool to see your set up, if you get the chance to photograph it. cool info!

pardonedmyself, That is the one! I just cut that head phone jack off and solder on a 1/4 inch jack, also available at radio shack. I will try to get some pictures up tomorrow.
Alright here are some photos of the lapel mic setup on my banjo. If you don't have facebook and for some reason cant view the photos, let me know and I will email them to you.

yea, I use a L.R Baggs paracoustic and it sounds good with just that but I also use a boss eq pedal and it sounds super good with that.
HL - nice man, well i'll be at both of those shows and a few more as well - so we'll have to do it up a bit... Charlotte has some great music coming in the next 2 months...

I had to join in since this is getting to the heart of my issues-- finding the right pick-up for my banjo. I am trying to run my banjo through my CAli Blonde
anyway, I was on the easy-folk forum and started a topic. i thought everyone here might enjoy what I found from there.
these are some of the pickups they have suggested

I am bringing this back up. I got the radio shack pick-up, got the soldering done, and it works amazing.
I will tinker with the placement some, but sounds great.

cool beans,

how clean of a sound can you get with this hl?
how clean of a sound can you get with this hl?
it is crystal. I have only plugged it into a tube amp. This weekend I am pulling out the cali blonde, which I would expect to be more crisp. The zip tie that is holding the mic is tight, but i can still slide it down the rod; therefore, tightening the sound up considerably.
I was worried with feedback since it was an open back and I mounted the mic facing the skin, but was fine.
sweet. ill have to look into it. i might run it through my blues junior once i get it set up, or through a pre amp of some sort. but i can't believe this works that well!
Hey thanks everyone for the great input. I have been playing some shows recently and I really need to get my Sierra mic'ed up, so I am going to go with the radioshack mic.
