Reviews for this Album
Back to basics
The Gleam is a great look at where the Avetts have been and where they are headed. Coming out of the Robinsville sessions this stripped down EP was great for helping hold fans over between Four Thieves and Emotionalism.
The First Gleam set the bar high
great songwriting
great all the way through
Showing the Beauty of Sadness
The last two songs on this album are melancholy's definition. And I'll tell you what, I wouldn't have it any other way. Each lyric is so precise and adept at cutting you in just the right way, when that last note fades the songs'll stick with you.
I wasn't wild about "Yardsale" for the first few months I had this album. But I cannot deny its masterful lyrics.
The best birthday gift!
The Gleam came out on my birthday, and was truly one of the best gifts I bought myself. I love "When I Drink" no truer words were ever written about a crappy reason to lose a day of living." If It's The Beaches" WILL ALWAYS BE A BEAUTIFUL HEARTFELT FAVORITE.
Some of my favorites are here
Out of the entire catalog, I'd say almost half of my top ten come solely from this EP. It's not something I'm always in the mood for, but when I am it cuts to the core.
A solid EP
While I can't give a 5, because I'm not fond of "Yardsale," I think this EP is about as good as any EP I've heard. A lot of EPs are throw away, but this bears multiple repeats.
First of many to come!
This is the first installment of The Gleam Series... i love what they did with this... The Gleam Series is home to their more heartfelt material... This first enstallment is only Seth and Scott Avett... but it is an amazing album.... Backwards with Time and If its the Beaches are some of the best song the boys have written....
Absolutely Brilliant
This album embodies all of what I love about the Avett Brothers. They take simple melodies and astounding lyrics to create six great songs, some of which are their best yet. "When I Drink" and "If It's The Beaches" are Avett classics that never get old.
this album will never be at any of my yard sales
This was a great album that i really wasn't expecting much out of. I was very pleasantly surprised the first time i heard it, and yard sale has become one of my all time favorites.
Awesome
So very good.
Ridiculously Good
I especially love Sanguine, When I Drink, Yardsale, Backwards with Time, If it's the Beaches, and Find My Love.
if it's the beaches
beautiful.
:)
"Backwards With Time" has been and continues to be one of my favorite Avett Brothers songs.
Scott and Seth at their best, in my opinion.
It doesn't get any better than this. As much as I love their live shows, the broke-down, simplistic beauty in every song on this EP is unmatchable. As much as I loved the second installment of the Gleam series, it doesn't compare to this one. My favorite EP of all time.
Honesty
When I drink and If its the beaches are two songs that I can very much identify with. I wonder if they bros have lost as many loves as they have in their songs
Brilliant
If it's the Beaches is the most beautiful love song I have ever heard. All the songs on this album are tru and pure, what more could you want.
mmm
The lyrics to If It's the Beaches, are the cutest...definitley one of my favorites.
Backwards With Time
yes. I feel this way also.
Amazing
Great start to "The Gleam" series!
Backwards With Time and It's The Beaches are among the best of the Avett Brothers songs - due to genuine ideas and instrumentals natural to the Avett Brothers.
"Which is the poison, and which is the wine? The scent and the colors are so much alike. And how much of each will it take to decide when you're at the table alone?" - Find My Love
If its the Beaches
is one of the most touching songs of all times. I catch myself singin this one in tha shower.....
My First Love
The first Avett album I bought and dismissed rather quickly, but that didn't last. Upon returning to the album from time to time I found it harder and harder to take out of my cd player, thanks to Sanguine and it was all uphill from there. This little album segued to getting every Avett song available at the time almost as fast as my original dismissal. Every song, every day, I still listen. I once took a cruise on my bike (bicycle not motorcycle- I'm not cool) and had my monster head-phones on, and turned Backwards With Time on the highest volume and felt high, like I just smoked a joint ( I don't smoke weed anymore- no motorcycle, no weed, not cool).
so wondrful.
i love this ep. If It's the Beaches has always always always been a favorite of mine.
When I Drink
Heard this song live, cracked up when Scott does the la la la la's... Wish they would have played it at the DMB concert
The Gleam is bright
Love this series, hope there is more to follow the first two. The Gleam has no faults, yet again nothing bad can be said.
my first
This is the first album of theirs that I had ever heard--I love the songs and all of the memories and peope (skin and bones) that are now tied to it forever.
A good start
I love the concept of the Gleam series, but I wish this one had a little more polish on it. It seems a bit rushed and the songs just don't stick with you as much as the second gleam. Overall a good record but not my favorite.
The Fullest
Part of getting the most out of your life (which is sort of what I think the Avetts mostly sing about,) is accepting and dealing with the tragedies as well as the high points. Some parts of life suck and it can be a hard, bitter old world, but there can be a beauty in melancholy and the sad and the hard make the joys that much bigger. That's part of what I think is going on in a lot of the songs on this album.
Yard Sale is my least favorite song on the album (though keep in mind that my least favorite Avett song is still far cry above much of the music out there,) but it's grown on me over time. The others are handsdown beautiful. I look forward continued explorations of the Gleam.
its true
Not gonna lie, I cried when I first heard "If its the beaches"
rediscovery
i just recently went back and listened to this one a few times... if it's the beaches is still so good, as well as all of the others...
the one that stuck out to me on this go 'round was Find My Love... so poignant and gut wrenching...
One of these days, yes one of these days...
when I go to a live show, I will get to hear Sanguine live...my favorite song! Maybe 6.19 or 6.20
Thank you TAB!
Great Album
It is a pretty solid album, I just wish that there were a few more songs on it.
Great song writing.
If It's the Beaches is one of the best songs of all time.
simple but beautiful
every song is amazing. i love this album and it got me through some tough times last year.
Amazing lyrics
If It's the Beaches is one of my favorite songs. When I drink is pretty awesome as well.
it seems like
every time i hear a new avett bros. record, i think to myself and say, 'damn, they did it again.' i especially love 'when i drink'
All around amazing.
If Its the Beaches
The first time i heard this song i couldnt have been happier. As all of the records, amazing straight through.
Sanguine
Hadn't paid much attention to this album in the past year almost but today remembered just how much this album means to me. The first few lines of Sanguine, the acoustic guitar... it all touches me deeper than any other song I think I've ever heard in my entire life. Find My Love is another that will always stick with me and define a very significant period in my life. I can't believe I let this album go unheard for so long. It's perfect.
