Ideas
Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge about this picture?
?
no ideas or knowledge...not what I expected as all the other albums covers have a more graphic style of artwork.
Dark
Very dark....wonder if it reflects the subject matter of the album.
Different...
It sure is different than all the other albums. At least we know Scott is the artist for this one also.

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone
Songs
I have literally listened to I and Love and You a record amount of time sin the past few days so much so that I am sure my girlfriend is going to strangle me with headphone cables, however it's just that good.......... I am still bummed that Late in Life has not made the album but, I am still reeeeeal stoked on it never less. I also think that they should do a covers album, with some of those Langhorne joints and the Tom T Hall, Townes van Sant, Jessica Lea Mayfield, stuff sauch as that on it.
wow
Definitely not what I was expecting. I guess I was expecting colorful apostrophes!
It's beautiful though and may be my favorite Scott Avett painting.
Also, SEPTEMBER?? When did that happen? I thought the release was August 11! At least they keep sharing little snippets, because I don't think I could stand the wait otherwise.
Is that an arm?
That weird fleshy thing sticking out at an odd angle?
very different
very different from what we've seen on album covers in the past. Interesting...
Hoax?
This preview is suspicious to me. It's either a hoax, or a cool painting by Scott (he's the painter right?) and they're gonna add some happy fonts to it.
--
It's not a lie, if YOU believe it.
WHOAH...
not what i expected at all. i heard it would be scotts painting of a girl against a black backdrop but this is darker than i imagined. I like it though. can't wait to get it on vinyl and cd. haha i like what digammo said about adding happy fonts!
Interesting
Is that Julianne Blackburn?
All you need is love
That's Yoko Ono and John Lennon
meaning
Shocking and beautiful. I wonder why they chose this
Different, but in a good way
I'm glad to see the a little something different from Scott. I love all his past artwork so it's cool to see something on the darker side. The Avett Brothers have seemed to evolve with every album, so naturally, the cover art should do the same.
scott is...
...an amazing artist

"a woman's heart runs on gasoline"
???
Odd and not like any of the other covers.
It sure looks like this album will have a lot of differences compared to the others.
I really like it though.
Interesting.
...but a polite, no thanks.
It's a beautiful painting. I mean it.
The teardrop/apostrophes are so fantastic and so capture the songs from this album, I think they should make the cover.
well whatever. the music is going to be good.
hmmm...
Very different, a little worrisome. A lot darker than I would expect. What is by her head? New/different is good, but I all this change is freakin me out. No offense to the brothers, but emotionalism + the Gleams seemed to have lost an edge they had before, and this warner bros, Rick Rubin thing makes me nervous. I hope the music stays beautiful, true, and original.
How does this tie into the website?
I'm sure there is a connection with this and the theme for the website, but I'm certainly not seeing the link right now.

impressive
i wanna know where he gets time to create masterpiece works of art with as seemingly busy as the music would appear to keep him. it's a time comsuming hobby...
Missed the Mark...
Why such a dark cover? Doesn't seem to accurately reflect the music.
Thanks!
I can't wait to hold it in my hands! I'll devour the liner notes and art, as well as the music. It's a beautiful piece of art.

Things change and get strange with the movement of time.
It's happening right now to you.
If the Beatles were from Appalachia instead of Liverpool, they might sound like the Avett Brothers – they were that good.
Yeah..
I absolutely agree with you, Johann357.
I too am worrisome.
I'm both excited and dreading the release of this album.
Yes I know I said dreading...but every time I read an article or a review of this album, like the link they posted on here, I hear stuff about the songs and how they could "make this band awfully famous."
And while I would love for more people to get interested in the Avetts,
I wouldn't want the band to lose their integrity for that to happen.
Let's face it, 99% of music on the radio is crap.
The Avetts are different. Their down-to-earth and very real....unlike the music that is popular today.
But by signing on to a major label and having the album produced by Rick Rubin...I fear that might change.
cover
Personally I love the new dark cover art, the Avett's music isnt all sunshine and rainbows and I think this represents that. Since this is looking like their poppiest effort to date I, for one, am glad to see it being balanced out by this cover.
Just my two cents

I've been drinkin' seven hours now
sympathy is a waste of my high
Not what I expected at all
Really interesting though.
interested
i'd like to understand the cover art and how it represents the music...
not saying the art is bad... just want to make the connection, if there is one.

Why all the negative feedback????
I think the painting/new cover is quite amazing. Does it really matter what the meaning behind it is? I think the only person to know its true meaning is Scott. Plus who really cares what is on the album cover. Its all about the music anyways. The cover just shows me another amazing talent that the Avett Brothers have. Not only one hell of a musician but a skilled artist as well. I love it! Cheers to the Avett Brothers and their success! Hope to see you all in Minnesota again reall soon.
beautiful
very caravaggio ... or jaques-louis david. can't wait for the audio ^_^

pretend love
Why the neg feedback?
I think we're just worried. We want everyone to love the Avett Brothers as much as we do and this, while everyone seems to agree it's an amazing painting, is not something that someone unfamiliar with TAB is going to just grab off the rack. They're not going to know Scott painted it. They're just going to overlook it.
intense
this artwork is very intense and seems very deep. the title gives a dark feeling. can't wait for the album!
I And Love And Yorick
I wasn't expecting that, but cool painting.
Vanitas
Vanitas is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the cover art for the first time. I took a number of Art History classes while in college and wrote a paper or two on the concept.
I looked up the definitions in one of my art books so as to be accurate.
"Vanitas-An image, especially popular in Europe in the 17th century, in which all the objects symbolize the transience of life. Vanitas paintings are usually of still lifes or genre subjects.
It is a theme that shows the transeince of life which allows the painter to comment on the ephemeral quality of material things."
If you understand vanitas then you can start to make the connections with the newer Avett music and older for that matter. Think of some of their lyrics and how they talk about the lack of importance on material things and how somethings never last. That is vanitas. It is a reminder that nothing lasts whether it is rotting fruit or death of a person.
This is just my artistic take on the new art which is an amazing piece.
YES! Vanitas!
aha! @TessMcClellan I absolutely recall vanitas now that you are jarring my memory. I'm so glad you put it in that perspective for me! It's been over 2 years since I took art at a college level but you are absolutely right! I recall from that class the skull must be present because it is the skull that reminds us that the other elements of the painting are short lived.
Now that I've made the connection it all makes perfect sense... the painting symbolizes the right way to live (as does most of the Avett's lyrics) in suggesting that spiritual well being is of much more importance than material wealth.
But now, can you clarify what else is in this painting other than the girl and the skull?? I can't quite decide what it is. I thought her arm at first but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for insight
Tess, thanks for the insight re: Vanitas.
It's very different and eye-catching because it is so different and not what I expected at all!
At first glimpse, I do think it is kind of dark. I def. don't claim to be knowledgable about art history, nor do I really understand the symbolism behind the cover art, but I imagine it is just a small piece of the art that will accompany this album.
My best advice? Don't judge a book (or a new album) by its cover.

WWABD?
hmmm
I must say, that does help.
album cover art
this has gone on long enough! all you "deep thinkers" have got to get a grip on yourselves and get with the program! ART IS ART, that's all, nothing more, nothing less. as if you are going to decipher some deep hidden meaning, break open the vault to some "higher level of existence"?? the artist, like ALL artists, paints from his/her feelings and TRIES to express this in whatever medium has been chosen. stop trying to "figure it out" will ya? and just ENJOY!
ok...
i do enjoy art for art's sake. my initial physical reaction was simply a smile, but with a background in art history i can't help but apply what i know about the subject. i guess my instructors in college did a pretty good job. my opinion/knowledge was shared for the simple fact that i thought it would help clear up some questions because the clear fact is people have questions when they look at art. the most simple question people always ask is "why did the artist make that?" we may never know for sure because we are not the artist, but we can look for meanings through themes and techniques that have been used for centuries.
so sorry to comiccharlie and the lookers with no questions for the little light bulb that went off in my head when i realized i could apply my college education to a real life situation outside of my job.
plus with scott's formal art training, i can't help but think that there is a connection.
never apologize for thinking
Tess - You did a good thing here. You shouldn't have apologized. The very first post of this thread asked if anyone had any ideas/knowledge of this painting, did it not? It's been clear from the beginning that others were curious about what it might mean or represent. I think you hit the nail on the head and may persuade some of the negative feedbackers to rethink how they feel about this cover. Thanks again!

cover & what's (hopefully) to come...
I don't know why I keep letting all these comments about Rick Rubin and the possible sucsess of the band get me so down. The Avett Brothers music, at least for me, has been so consistently great, and I love every live song I've heard off the new album; Laundry Room must be one of the best songs they've ever written along with a handful of others. I honestly don't think there's reason to worry; the band is simply evolving.
The cover art was, I'll admit, different than I expected, but the fact that it's a Scott-painting seems a testament to the fact the band has remained the driving force behind the record; their own concept seems to be shining through, despite how much tweaking the album's apparently going through. It's not as if it's some cheesed-up drawing...it's really beautiful and personal, just like the Avett's music has always been.
agreed
Oh the new album is definitely going to be amazing. I can't wait!
