would have to be going to Philmont in New Mexico. Not only was it great backpacking, but one of the trail camps' staff put on a show. It was the very first time I heard the Avett Brothers. No joke. They covered Shame and Go To Sleep.
Clearly the best summer past time is grabbing the acoustic guitar and going down to the river with my friends to fish and relax in the shade by the water and let the rest of the world wash on down the river and be free from the stress even if just for an afternoon.
By far my favorite summer past time is going on a long road trip from Thunder Bay, ON, Canada each summer down to a music festival in the states. That's where i first heard of the Avett Brothers, and where I have seen them since every summer.
How lucky am I to have seen them at each of these festivals! I love music, and there is not much chance to see the bands I love up in my home town, so we travel each summer, and have had many great memories.
We got front row both times and it was seths birthday in buffalo. It was a amazing time. In syracuse the stage is low and very upclose i loved it and i happened to get multiple hugs from Scott and he remembered us it was the best mini tour ever!
First, going to Avett Brothers shows. After that, the beach.
-- The Avetts are a rare talent, timeless yet current, and capable of singing straight to a single soul while broadcasting to the ever-increasing masses.
A couple years ago, my family and I went out to a camping park. There was almost no one there, so it was really quiet. We told stories and roasted marshmallows over a fire we made. Easily, one of the best summers ever.
I love all god's creatures, but I have to admit to killing a few lightening bugs. we used to catch them and smear them on our faces..... Lightening bug war paint.
I like to go hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains as much as I can during the summer...and every night I like to come home and play guitar and sing on my back porch.
I have a bug-obsessed son. We spent the whole summer outside looking for bugs and worms. For christmas he's getting a bug vacuum and bug observatory that hooks up to the vacuum. My favorite summer pastime is to drink beer outside while he hunts bugs.
I didn't have to think twice! My favorite summer past time is going to baseball games with my family. Supporting the hometown team is something we all enjoy and we get really involved. It's the perfect way to bond with my family and feel like part of the community. It's the best part of living in this itty-bitty little Virginia town. : )
or just sitting on the deck with some tunes, some brew and staring at the stars! Catching lightning bugs and putting them in the Bug Jar would make it so much prettier!
When I was younger and had fewer bills and more money to blow, every other summer I would backpack and hitchhike my way across whatever country in Europe. I've seen all of italy (so great I had to go there twice), most of Germany, parts of switzerland - and so on... The tradition started in '99 when I graduated, tho it's a little more spaced out than every other year now. Stupid student loans.
my children are now 16 & 18,& we all still get excited at the first sight of a firefly each year...we used to catch them and keep them in a peanut butter jar, and put them in their room at night...they would always let them out and I would spend the next morning playing catch and release...so, yes, this would come in very handy...

And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?
my favorite summer pasttime was the newport folk festival... hah.
actually. no...
i would say good ole window down riding around in the country so hot that you need to stop at a swimmin' hole to keep from stickin to the seats. and of course, sublime is oh so summery.
Camping and hiking with my husband. This year we visited Glacier National Park. Amazing place. Tons of snow even in July. Lake Bowman secluded and beautiful. Great place to celebrate 25 years of marriage.
My favorite summer memory is actually from this past summer, because I discovered The Avett Brothers! My friend and I took a college class over the summer together and while we were driving she popped in a CD unknown to me. And blaring through the speakers was 'She's fighting with the sky, she thinks she can, living within a lie, she thinks she can' and then I fell in love. After that, I bought 3 more Avett CDs and listened to them non-stop, and cranked up the volume as we took 40 East on our way to Hampstead. Hands down, the best times of my life listening the Avett brothers with my best friends!

I haven't eyes for anyone else, I'm thinking of you, and nobody else
I like put on some vinyl on a a day when the sun is shining, through on a sundress and do some painting with friends,we dance around as the music is playing and in the end we become covered in paint. But its the pest way to spend a summers day.
My favorite summer memory as a child is catching fireflies on summer nights. I would collect a jar full, then turn them all loose. The bug jar would be a perfect sentimental item to relive those lost days.
I love going with my daughter to collect 4 leaf clovers. She is the luckiest person I know! She also knows more about bugs than any one I know. This bug jar would make her day.
