On the subject of drunk fans cheering "When I Drink," I think most fans, and by most I mean the overwhelmingly vast majority, understand the meaning of the song. It isn't hidden or subtle. At the same time, the song's a little humorous and entirely truthful. Really, I think it's the truth of the song that I cheer whether I've had too many or none at all. I've lived the moments they're talking about, the funny and the sad, and I imagine most of the other fans have as well.
The song still plays to me as more of a realization of the pitfalls of drinking rather than a flat condemnation of it.
Of course, at the shows, I typically don't drink much so as not to be stuck in line or running to the restroom during the music. Some things are certainly more important than booze.
And I'm with the folks who don't care whether they smoke or drink, what they smoke or drink, or how much they smoke or drink. Judging by the lyrics, they realize the consequences of the actions and they have a lot to live for. That formula should equate to a lot of great music for many years to come.
