Friday May 22 in Portland kicked off with a stellar opening act: Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. Sallie Ford, a 21-year-old Portland resident, hails from North Carolina and has a hell of a pair of vocal chords. Her smooth Buddy Holly-esque croon has been playing in my car for a week straight and I suggest you keep your ear to the ground regarding this budding talent. Following Sallie Ford, the always-entertaining Jason Webley roused the crowd properly with a few drinking songs plus a moving version of “The Last Song” (after which he played one more).
The Avett Brothers took the stage on Friday with a 20-song set list that would give not a single hint of any songs to come the following night. Disappointing? Not hardly: a cover of “Cigarettes, Whiskey and Wild, Wild Women” plus “Love Like the Movies” didn’t disappoint in the least. And it’s always exciting to anticipate what garment will have spangles on it during “Wanted Man” (hospital gown, if you’re keeping track). An added bonus was the thumbs-up from Seth Avett regarding my “I am a breathing time machine” tee shirt just before hearing the song I borrowed it from (“Laundry Room”). Closing the show, “Kickdrum Heart” had the crowd stomping the percussive interlude onto the literal springboard that is the Crystal Ballroom floor.

I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth.
opening band
My awesome sister-in-law Sallie Ford is opening for the two shows at the Crystal Ballroom - wish I could be there to see the shows!
