So I really do believe this was, again, a pretty good show they did. Despite walking in with my friends around 6:15-6:30 to the square, I thought that the opening band, Cornmeal, was a decently good start for the show. It did get the crowd going when I got there. I enjoyed the fact that the Avetts played "Will You Return?" It was a great song to get the fans jumping and into the show. I am also quite happy they made "Paranoia in B-Flat Major" their encore song. The songs that impressed me were the ones off their up-coming album. A switch in instruments seems like a risk to me for them, but they pull it off and they make them sound great. I am excited for September even more after this show!
I, unfortunately, have to say that I did not enjoy the show 100% completely. It's not either band (believe me, they were great!), but it was the crowd. The combination of it being free and outdoors invites any person to just come and do whatever they want. I was getting headaches from cigarette and marijuana smoke, had beer deliberately spilled on me and had more than a couple dozen people constantly walk into and in front of me making me constantly move. There were a couple incidents involving crowd surfing and an angry woman thrashing at everyone around her.
I'll give this a 4/5 stars. I am only giving it a 4 because I had issues with the crowd... not the band. The bands did a great job entertaining many of their fans and I can't wait for the Wescott Theater show in Syracuse!
