"My words trickle down, from a wound that i have no intention to heal..." -Simon and Garfunkel

I'm watching it right now. Ahhh! haha

I completely loved it.

perfect setlist for only 30 minutes. "when i drink" and "talk on indolence" were excellent additions.
and i called my dad earlier to tell him to watch...told him about them last week, he had yet to hear them.

simply excellent!!!!

My goodness, I love them. What an amazing show!

Some of us live in hick territories like Central Florida. No Avetts until next week. So I'm basically steaming and don't care about excitement or setlists.

AMazing!! now i have to be patient and wait till may....this will be very very hard!

Had a get together tonight with friends & family. At 10, I surprised them with the ACL show...added some new converts to the list of fans. Nicely done boys.

Be Kind, For everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Well, tuned into ACL on PBS tonight, and was shocked when I never got the Avett Brothers. I instead have Nick Lowe & The Swell Season. What a disappointment.

Down with the shine, the perfect shine.

Recorded it while we went to see Avatar. Just watched it. Avatar was great. Avettar was even better. So glad they showed a bit of their madness with Talk to close.

Rejoice always, Mark

insanely jealous. not only did it not air here, but the air times here are on the 31st at 2am, 5am, and 5pm. What the heck is that? Yet I saw John Mayer on last Saturday at 9 or 10pm.

there's only one thing here worth hoping for

i have to kindly disagree with these opinions. there were several things i didn't like:

1. the setlist, WAAAYYYYY too mellow for the first half. (note everyone sitting down for the entire show)
2. poor scott's voice sounded so tired and off.
3. couldn't hear scott's guitar on SOFS, and don't know what was up with the funky sounding intro.
4. Joe Kwon's solo on Die, Die, Die. Not a fan of the uptempo cello solo, always sounds off.

i know i'm throwing myself to the wolves here, but that is just my opinion of the show.

The full show is now available online at http://video.pbs.org/video/1392403650/

I agree with will... the sound was pretty bad for the entire thing. But I did enjoy it.

I had a fangirl listening/viewing party and it was amazing!!!! I had tears and chillbumps and my teenagers proceeded to slam their bedroom doors shut when I heard us all screaming and singing along!!! I think it sounded great and it was so intimate watch them in close up and HD no less! I love hearing the little imperfections and and you just never know what they'll comment or shout out!

"I did...I swear I did" Smiling

Thought it was pretty good. Talk On Indolence had a ton of energy

eh. Sorry, but Die Die Die was about the worst thing I've ever heard from them. Got so rough at the end there, out of tune, exhausted. I cant believe looking at the rest of that setlist (like Please Pardon Yourself) that that awful version of Die Die Die was selected?

Thought the rest of the setlist was good. Especially loved that they absolutely killed Talk on Indolence. Murder in the City alone probably won them thousands of new fans though. Great version I thought.

Did the guys play first or second? I set my DVR to record ACL (even though it said it was going to be K'naan/Mos Def and was actually Nick Lowe and the Swell Season) and it cut off the last fifteen minutes. It's showing TAB are scheduled twice on Tuesday, once on Wednesday, and a couple of times next Sunday. I'm figuring at least one of those will actually be them, but need to know if I should set my recordings for an extra fifteen minutes at the end. So, yeah, that was a lot of extra info for a simple question: first or second?

"I've never been too good at readin' in between the lines."

That was the best Murder in the City i have ever seen Scott sing. Amazing.

Screaming my lungs out- with nothing to say...

It's not showing here in Bama until Tuesday. I am going to see if i can find it online, for the time time being. If I do, I'll post a link.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."

Katminelli,
The Avett Brothers are first.

i didn't think any of the songs were awful. i wasn't a big fan of some of the camera work though. i agree die die die was a litte off and was wondering if scott was having issues singing high b/c seth was trying to take it down lower than normal and couldn't really hit it, but i think they did a good job getting their energy across. i was so excited for them. Smiling one thing i did love was no one screaming during murder. Smiling

if they sell the dvd, do you get all the songs they performed or just the episode as it aired? it'd be nice to get some bonus and see ppy and the others.

Burn the questions. Burn the shame.

I wish that the set list they showed had been ordered differently. It felt like they showed all the ballads, then all of the up tempo songs.

Alot of critics as usual. that is one reason for posting I guess

BUT

I caught the show in Ga. It was so awesome to see them on a big TV! I could barely stay quiet enough not to wake up the house. Soooo excited for them. This is big! They deserve this and so much more. How cool is it to see the guys on TV and see them live. All of you who have met them in person must feel really happy.

Its online today!

Screaming my lungs out- with nothing to say...

I thought it was great! My family watched some of it, and my brother, who likes yelling screaming rap metal whatever and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, admitted to me that it was "really pretty good," and he didn't even watch the whole thing; he missed "Slight Figure of Speech" and "Talk On Indolence." I wondered a little about the sound, but it didn't bother me too much. I've never seen "January Wedding" live, but I love the smile on Seth's face...you can tell he's thinking about someone special. Smiling

All in all, it was probably the best 30 minutes of television I've ever seen.

i clapped as if i was there...love them

I loved Talk on Indolence but the audience sucked they all sat there not going crazy like i would have done if i was there

Thank you Christy. I loved it. Scott's voice did seem a little off. Regardless, they did great and i am so happy for them.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."

I wonder if the audience was asked not to jump and holler? I noticed one dude was jumping while sitting. Had to see it to get the real joy he was experiencing. I too clapped at home.

When the Flaming Lips were on ACL, there was quite a bit of audience participation.

I agree with some, the sound for Die Die Die was way off, as well as voices....BUT who cares? Really? I guess you may need to express that, but aren't we here for Avett Love? I do believe that was the best live Murder in the City version I have ever heard. Scott's voice was fabulous! I had never seen When I Drink, either. I believe those two where the best of the show, not to mention Talk on Indolence. I LOVE that song. They went out in Avett style. All in all it was soooooooo short, it was just a blip in the scheme of Avett product. Can't wait to see them in April for a full length show.

musical heartbeat

The song selection wasn't the greatest, but I'm proud of 'em.

That was exciting, eh? I thought the 'Murder...' and 'When I Drink' performances, especially, were SPOT ON!
I was very proud, and felt a little emotional that our boys were representin' so well.

yes I am with Will. I was very worried for them lol. Lots of stuff was off. Weird to see them at home on the big screen in hd lol. I did think when i drink went well but the rest was very dissapointing but I love these guys all the same. I love it because I am a fan but was not attracting any new fans on this one. I say this with love!~

Not true. We had friends who saw them for the first time and want a list of tunes to get.

Rejoice always, Mark

I'm with bobz! Simply not true that they did not attract new fans with their performance. Perhaps we have all gotten so used to witnessing this phenomenon that is The Avett Brothers, that now we fail to appreciate it. I know people who were absolutely blown away by this. And I am willing to bet that the first show you/we all attended had a few off notes here and there...did it matter? did we even notice? Heck no, because we were too busy being stunned by the beauty and simplicity of their songs and the sincerity of these charismatic country boys.

...where nothing is owed, deserved, or expected...and your life doesn't change by the man that's elected...

Ya know, the wonderful thing about live performances is that they are unpolished and raw. I don't want to see a band live and have them sound exactly as they do on their recordings. I want to see the emotions of the singer, every note played by the musicians, every comment made under their breaths, ... the feelings they evoke from the audience.

These guys are amazing live - I've heard them sing perfectly and I've heard them be a little off. I've enjoyed both.

As far as the reaction of the audience at ACL, I bet most of them had never heard of TAB before the show. Sure, they were reserved at first, but did you see how excited they were by the end of Indolence? The boys definitely garnered some new fans ...

C'mon folks. Enjoy every minute of things like this. A group like The Avett Brothers don't come along often.

i sat with 5 people who watch ACL every week and had to admit that they were not turned on by this. They had never heard Avetts before. Then we listened to The NYC shows from this past fall and they loved it. One was a audience source and the other was a board and they loved the aud show and felt the intensity of the show. My problem with it is the feed for the audio is to crisp for the Avetts. As a fan I loved it cuz I love the guys no matter what. Was not the only bunch to have said it was just aight. I begged another friend to watch it and was not exactly into yet we listened to a older recording and loved them. I personally think sometimes people dont want to be a critic to something they believe in so much and love so much. The Avetts still being my fav band in many many many years lol. Again all said with love. Alot of it had to do with the feed. We watched it in HD pn a 47 inch LG with Polk surround so the feed was even more intense here.

I will say as I had a friend who was there he said it was great. He is a fan tho. He said the playback was nothing like it was there. With that said. It is what it is.

dj,
sent you a pm.

The two friends I watched with who had never heard them until Saturday afternoon in my car thought they were good, and also thought it was a bit ragged. I knew how the songs are supposed to sound and I thought the last couple could've been better. I thought the slow songs came across. My husband thought they are better live. I have never considered tv their forte, they feed off the fans' energy in live shows. Yet I can't wait to watch ACL again (and again & again) because I love them.

My two friends are solid new converts so we fans must be extra-touchy.

Bring on Ace of Cakes!!!

Less cello please...

I'll say that I didn't think it was the best I've ever seen them, HOWEVER it was good for the simple fact that it was ACL. Parts of it seemed like they were barely holding on and just BARELY keeping things from falling apart. But that's also part of the excitement that you get with the Avetts. Sometimes they sound they're walking a tightrope of melody and broken strings, but somehow they make it through.

I hate to call it the "novelty" of what they do, but it's kinda true I think.

~~~Roll Tide!~~~
I thought the show was superb. I'm watching it over and over on video.pbs.org
Yes, Die Die Die and "Talk on" were not the best. The energy was there but the tuning was way off, especially with DDD. I thought Seth was having more problems than Scott actually. But when it comes down to it - DDD and ToI are extremely hard to perform live. DDD is basically impossible, I've never heard them play it well, its just not possible to sing, and ToI you can't sing after the fast intro!! No breath. But, I still think the energy in Talk is so amazing it can be pulled off even with the out-of-breath singing. Die on the other hand.... Maybe they should just leave it for the studio...
But anyway: the performance was awesome and I loved it!
DDD has become somewhat of an anthem for them at shows. It's a crowd favorite. They can't shelve it, Silly Madhat...
The added drums are awesome, too. I think Seth did a fantastic job throughout, but Scott sounded a little rough. His voice sounded to me like it was turned down in the mix after the first verse or so. Rough or not, I always love seeing them rock Die, Die, Die.
I am just gonna say, that I loved every minute of it...each and every time I have watched it, which is MANY! I like that version of DDD, it sounds kinda stepped up...
I guess they coulda lip synched it... :0
Ok, upon view #2 it wasn't as bad as I first thought. Talk On Indolence is about as solid as ever.
I actually think the song they struggle with in live performances is I and Love and you. I think the recorded version is very good - but very slick and produced. There is no way 4 guys can reproduce that sound. The best version I have heard of it live is where Scott is on banjo and Seth is on guitar and it is just a stripped down, acoustic version. It is also a hard song to sing. I get the impression that they are trying too hard to hit the right notes, and the playing and showmanship is sacrificed. That song may be better off left out of live shows.
I think a lot of the comments here are valid and a lot has to do with the way it was filmed and the sound quality. It was very raw and with no audience participation/interaction, it had the appearance of the boys just trying hard, but not really connecting. I actually think this is common for ACL shows - not unique to the Avett Brothers.
yeah it was more the feed that turned me. But these guys can do no wrong to all of us so we love it. I ripped to dvd and watched it again at a friends and he felt the same as I did about the feed. Half a dozen of one half a dozen of the other lol. Their was some new feels to songs that were cool and some of spots as well.
I watched it again and like themissingavett thought it was much better the second time. Really tremendous Murder in the City and January Wedding. I don't know exactly what 'the feed' is but if it's the sound fading in and out it happened with the Heartless Bastards' set too.
