Ann Arbor MI 3/9/2010

The Avett Nation are waiting for the SetList from Ann Arbor on Tueday night, before we send the Brothers off on a big jet plane to Europe! Thanks in advance!

Replies for this Board Topic

Take the last 4-5 shows setlists, subtract Yardsale, Lowering, PG from Chile, My Losing Bet, PG from Raleigh, Love Like the Movies, Denouncing, Living of Love - add a musical giftbox that played January Wedding made by The Low Anthem and presented onstage and a mostly acapella version of Murder in the City - daughter, Scott's mom (Scott mysteriously couldn't get his git in tune after not having applied the capo quite right). I will still go see the Brothers over any live musical act out there - but to me, it's almost like they were rehearsing for the shows across the pond. Seth didn't even solo. Sad There was quite a bit of love in the room - a connection that seems to grow with each show.

anyone get it in order? specifics please. sorry to hear that it wasn't your fave, but, to be fair, they did play yardsale for FREE earlier in the day. pretty lucky!

Burn the questions. Burn the shame.

Oh shoot. No one has posted one yet? It was not my show to keep a list...With the kids, it was a little hectic. If no one posts soon, I'll wrack my brain. Honestly, we're still a little bummed that we didn't get an encore... Sad

"one with Earth and one with God"

Did not write it down but from memory in no particular order:

And It Spread
Shame
Salina
Paranoia
Colorshow
The Fall
Laundry Room
Head Full of Doubt
The Perfect Space
Kickdrum Heart
Slight Figure of Speech
January Wedding
Distraction
Bella Donna
Skin and Bones
Where have the average people gone
Murder In the City
Salvation Song
Go To Sleep

I don't think they played Talk on Indolence at the show. They did at Borders. Also, you forgot Salvation Song and Go to Sleep

If I hadn't had the privilege of talking with Chris and Josh last night, I would think we were at different shows.

Excellent venue. Great sound. Better crowd than even Athens (told Lamar I wouldn't admit that). Good set list. Scott goes acapella on Murder when he can't get his guitar to work. Nice interaction between TAB and Low Anthem including a gift of a music box made by Low Anthem that plays January Wedding.

Loved being at the opening and closing shows of this tour.

Rejoice always, Mark

wow scott went a capella on Murder because of his guitar. that is crazy considering at chicago set had to do the same thing on the ballad of love and hate.

'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

Speaking of Scott's guitar, anyone know what he's playing? It's a Martin. I'm guessing it's a HD-35. It's got that three-piece back typical of a HD-35 or D-35, and it looked like herringbone design to me (that's what the "H" stands for).

I think you're right about Talk on Indolence so I took it off and added the other two. It was a good show. I'd say the first half was great and the second half was below average but overall we had an awesome time. The whole band made a point of coming to us in the front couple rows to shake our hand after the show. I've met them before and wasn't going to stick around but then Scott and Seth come up and stick their hands out and say "thank you for coming". That was kinda cool.

Scott's guitar is awesome but apparently doesn't play worth a crap....intentional perhaps? I'm just saying....

to echo Hutch's sentiment.....personally, i think the whole acapella Scott thing is the closest you will get to seeing sibling rivalry in public between the two brothers....and i say, keep it up! glad i got most of it on vid.... and plz don't misunderstand my mini-review - it was a great show - ANY TAB show is a great show - my expectations were higher than others going into it though because ;

1. this was a make-up show from October
2. last show of the spring tour
3. they had a day off before. this usually means major energy.
4. Ann Arbor is not a major city which means they are (from the setlists i have seen) more inclined to go off the beaten setlist path,
5. they love playing this city, and whenever they do, something extraordinary happens (3 encores the last time - this time, not one).

so again, don't get me wrong about not seeing this band live - i will take their worst over any bands best - and it was certainly all that much more enjoyable as Josh + I experienced it together, and we were seated amongst four rows of friends, front and center (thank you Rhonda + Leslie!) and of course, all four guys coming out and shaking hands/kissing babies after they were told that curfew was up and that they couldn't play anymore was in true Avett fashion (like the old days). Great way to end the tour, can't wait for the next or the Crackerfarm vids from the other continents.

The only problem TAB have is that they set the bar so high with previous amazing shows that every show is anticipated to be an incredible night, which is hard to live up to, even for a band as talented as TAB.

This should be a sticky - if such things existed here.

The explanation given for no encore confirmed what many of us were already thinking. These bigger venues have strict contracts that contain major financial penalties for playing past a certain time. If you measure the actually playing time or compare number of songs, the shows now are pretty much the same length. If you get three encores, it's because you got three fewer songs in the main set.

To get excited about encores now is like getting excited about that big tax return. (IT WAS YOUR MONEY AND THE GOVERNMENT KEPT IT ALL YEAR WITHOUT PAYING INTEREST! Sorry, that's a hot point with me. Of course, the illustration doesn't apply if you aren't paying income tax and still get a return. In that case, just send your tax paying neighbors a thank you note. Ignore this aside if you find it personally or politically offensive.) Multiple encores as a genuine response to audience enthusiasm is history.

Has anyone actually asked any of the boys why the current set lists seem to be repetitive? That would sure beat our endless whining.

Rejoice always, Mark

It was a great day! The show at Borders was very intimate and they sounded amazing. I think they sounded great at the Theater. One thing I am not really liking is the addition of someone on the drum kit on songs where they don't usually have someone there. I think it messes with their raw Avett Concert sound that I love so much.

I am always impressed with their professionalism and how much appreciation they show to their fans. They were great with my 3 year old neice. They each signed her Seth and Scott stuffed animals for her, Now the stuffed animals are complete!

Sorry...got to do it bobz...of course the crowd was better than Athens, it's hard for Mich*gan people to talk over music when they can't string 2 words together and their grunts probably blended in with the music. GO BUCKS!!! Ann Arbor, drive north till you smell it, drive west till you step in it.

lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?

Aw, I wish Miller would've played harp on "The Fall" in Chicago. I had a nice chat with him during soundcheck at the House of Blues. Nice guy. Really, really full of gratitude for getting to tour with the Avetts. And I really dug his harmonica holder. Got to get me one.

Just started learning the harp part for "The Fall" last night. Yet again, TAB blew open one of their songs for me by playing it live, making it a favorite.

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."

I loved the show. It was pretty mellow (the last show I saw was at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR... awesome and so NOT mellow), but it was exactly what I was hoping for... it felt really intimate, for lack of a better word. (I'm short and so love seated venues...)

Perhaps with all of the new fans gained from the new album, they felt it necessary to have somewhat of a "greatest hits" set list for this tour? It doesn't matter much to me... I'm just happy to be able to see them live.

How come the Avett's dont allow recording? or more precisely..do they allow recording but the not sharing of the show?

"Has anyone actually asked any of the boys why the current set lists seem to be repetitive? That would sure beat our endless whining"
bobz, it sounds like a great idea--I nominate you.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

It honestly doesn't bother me much. I rarely see back-to-back shows. Saw the first and last of this tour and each was unique enough for me.

See how I wiggled out of that one.
