Team Avett #102

"My words trickle down, from a wound that i have no intention to heal..." -Simon and Garfunkel
Maybe Colombia is making them play 90% of the new album every show now?

We all should break down the walls being built around us
PPY...nice. Too bad they didn't play that last night or in Knox ... haven't heard that one in a while, and it's a favorite of mine.
Well.....at least they played PPY. Again, very predictable and safe. Gunnar, it was nice to see you in Knoxville and Asheville!

"If I were walking through the rain, and I hear you call my name, I would break into a run without a pause."
Last night I stood the whole night long
I heard a whole show full of songs
I spent the whole day
I drove on down, but it's a shame
Tonight they sang the same ones
Yeah, every chorus was the same

Give the love you find until it's gone
Amen, Emma. Kind of a let down. Still an amazing 3 days with some amazing people! I can't wait to see all of you again!
Emma, that cracked me up! lol
A solid list of great songs, but yes, its very familiar looking. Still wish I could have been there! Can't wait to see some of the videos on youtube.

Going to New Year's Eve in Asheville?

Very predictable set...they sounded pretty good. That was a sweet theater though
I was so close to trying for the 3 show run, and I'm glad I didn't. Good setlist(s), but I feel like I've already seen that show. I really thought they'd mix it up and make it really special since they've been off for a while now.
Great post, Emma! I still wish I could've made the show with you guys!

"If I were walking through the rain, and I hear you call my name, I would break into a run without a pause."
Ooooh do i miss pre-I&L&You days
I will drive anywhere and work just to afford tickets but I miss the old tunes.
I'm with you Christy.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."
Oh, we're all spoiled!
We were just discussing this at home and I guess the consensus is pretty much the same. Safe setlists and suprisingly so. I wonder if they are writing & planning all of these in advance....and if so, is that why that raw, more unpredictable edge seems to be missing?
Don't get me wrong. Their energy and delivery is 100% dialed in, for sure. I can't complain about that at all. I just miss the variety of songs, and they usually are very pro-active about that, it seems. They know their audience. Scott even said "See y'all tomorrow!" at the end of Night One.
On the other hand, after seeing a May run full of banjo blowouts (sometimes even on song #1), it really is nice that the shows flow better now, less time lost to tuning, busted stuff, etc. And it's nice to have people in the crowd fully engaged and loving every song. There were no moments where it was apparent that people thought "oh I don't know this one so I'll just talk through it."
All that being said, The Fox Theatre is a beautiful venue and our seats could hardly have been better. I had a blast singing & dancing along to the soundtrack of my life with so many folks and finally putting 3D faces to all the names & avatar photos.
One last point I'll make is the comment a friend's husband made. He fully enjoyed the show and scoffed a bit at our remarks...."I was glad they played the songs that I know, and they played them all well."
He didn't go to ten shows this year, so it's all relative I guess.
All in all, with the combination of music, friends, food, fun, and late night fire in the sky, I can't imagine any place I'd rather have been for the New Year's Eve weekend (except maybe in Knoxville on 12/31
) Thank you to all who were a part of making this weekend great. Happy New Year!
does anyone know the song langhorne performed unplugged last night at the fox?
Diamonds & Gold
Here's the setlist, sort of:
Be Set Free
Rebel Side Of Heaven
Restless
In The Midnight
For A Little While
Mary
Cut It Down
*Diamonds & Gold
*Worries
Not sure where these two go

Burn the questions. Burn the shame.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. The guys played with a lot of energy and I had an ok time at both Asheville and Atlanta, but for the entirety of both nights I just felt like I had seen it all before. There was not one song either night that I had not seen at least 2 or 3 times before (and most songs several more times than that). I also counted 13 songs that were played in both Asheville and Atlanta. The first dozen or so Avett shows I went to were all, for the most part, completely different from one another. But the last several, while still energetic and fun, have all seemed like the same show. I don't know if the written setlists are the culprit (if they are indeed using them), but I sure hope the trend stops at some point. Personally, I would gladly sacrifice a little of the smoothness of the recent shows for more variety in the setlist.
With that being said, as CoffeeBomb stated, I think we might be just a little spoiled. I took several newbies both nights and they all absolutely loved it.

Nothing's good because nothing lasts. And all that comes, it comes here to pass.
I would voice my pain, but the change wouldn't last.
All that comes, it comes here to pass.
I'm still trying to process my feelings about this run of shows. Each night was fun, the band was clearly excited to be playing, I had a truly wonderful time hanging with my Avett friends and meeting new people from the boards and am so glad I went. However, I remain flabbergasted by how many repeats there were. I didn't expect that at all. Going to have think about it a little more.
I thought it was interesting Seth was joking around saying he expected to see every one of us at every one of their shows this year(he said it at least 2 of the 3 nights), and then they went and played basically the same show 3 nights in a row. With such an extensive catalog I wonder why they don't break out other tunes or at least throw in more covers to make things more fresh. Last night, while I was really happy for them to be playing such a great theatre, I left feeling disappointed. I'd give the run 3 out of 5 stars. I am very excited about finally having hard copies of all of the Darling cds though.

Burn the questions. Burn the shame.

Asheville > Atlanta....set-listickly speaking
You're right, lightning_on_my..., apologies for grumpiness. It was an amazing show. The boys were ripping up a storm in a beautiful theater and I had a great time both in the show and with everyone before and after. I'll save any observations of the three day run in the review section. Happy New Year everyone!
are we NOT allowed to state our experience of things and opinions WITHOUT it being considered complaining??
sheesh-i guess not.
well then, here's my experience/opinion/complaint/what-have-you:
something, anything.
if you did 1 show out of this run, then yes-you saw a show that was point on, energy filled, FUN!!!! absolute avett lovliness.
well, i did all 3 and i feel a little "under-whelmed" to say the least, about the song choices night after night. at no point did i have that moment of- i think my head exploded/oops i just peed myself a little/i can't believe they are playing this song!!!!!!!
nope. didn't happen.
very heavy on I&L&U (i love the album), but just too much and all i have heard before...many times. if they were so gung-ho about playing the songs off that album, it would have been lovely to hear ten thousand words, ill w/ want or incomplete and insecure. but that's just my opinion.
maybe i set my expectations too high of what it was going to be, but i just never felt that moment where you just KNOW, they are going out of their way to do something really special for you. no run of the PG suite, no late in life plugged in, no Darling song
i can honestly say i was left yearning for more. there was so much hype for this and to me it ended up being very ordinary and repetitive. god, i feel bad saying that b/c i know the brothers and this band are anything BUT ordinary. ugh, i don't know...i'll just end with-i will not go through, all that i went through, to make this whole trip happen... again.
NOW...on the other hand
what did make this trip worth while was the avett nation!! i love this community!!! what a fun, diverse bunch of people. i had a great time hanging out with my friends whom i hadn't seen in forever.
i met a lot of people from the boards here and ya'll...it was my pleasure! so nice to actually put a person to the username! maybe it's just me but i felt like i already knew so many of you even though we never had met before.
thanks to blasto for his hospitality and opening his home to us.
it was so fun meeting and hanging out with you all in asheville. hmmm, what shall we call ourselves....the coffee bomb contingent, perhaps?
what can i say about the lantern festival...so much fun! and no reports of fires or ufo's in the sky, in the newspaper the next day! yippee!! i do have photos and some video that i'm working on getting uploaded (i just got home late last night) so for the pics, friend me on facebook(or i'll find you) and when videos are up, i'll post a link to those.
also met some new florida fans who gave me a ride home from ATL and now i'm sure i have made some new florida avett show going buddies-thanks sherri!!
ok, i'll shut up. all and all i had a great time and it was a great way to ring in the new year and i'm glad i did it!
i hope everyone made it home safe and i'll see ya next time!!

"We took a pickup, a tent, and a shotgun," recalls Scott. "We went out thinking it was a wild frontier."
sorry i only made 1 of the shows. this was my first time in 3 years not to ring in NYE with the brothers. being a dumb outsider looking in, it looked as if there are some ungrateful people. i know that this is untrue. in years past NYE seemed to be more about meeting other board members and the fact that the boys are playing is a big bonus. it looks like this was accomplished for y'all. i am disappointed that i didnt make it for the full run and the awesome party at ryan's house.
ok ill stop complaining.

i went to all three shows- had a complete blast. i mean, i guess i was slightly disappointed in the variety, but it was still exciting for me to meet everyone and have the whole NYE experience since it was my first NYE run. the lantern party was the best!

i was a one line wonder in my own love song
cross posted in reviews, but these are my pics from the Atl show

Looks like Ryan's gonna be the cool kid on the boards for a while.
Great meeting ya, dude. Hate we didn't make the party, but I had a lot of driving to do to get back home then to ATL by 8 the next night.
Glad the shin-dig was such a success!

3 night run = 1420 miles driven
Nearly identical set lists = disappointment
Finally meeting so many of you = worth it!
