- I have loved the brother's music for many years now, and hold them closer than any other musicians. But recently I have had my worries. Since Four Thieves Gone, I've felt a loss in their edge. I still love their music, but it has lost something I can't quite point out. The Gleams are wonderful, but I can only take so much sappyness. Emotionalism just didn't resonate for me. The move to warner bros, and Rick Rubin has amplified my concern. Change is a great thing, but I'm nervous the brothers will end up another sad story. New style and new fans are wonderful, but at what costs? I know the Avetts got a family, and they're not Against me!, but its sad to see them move out of ramsuer and NC, and into Rick Rubin. I just want the music to stay true and original. Change is fine, but I want to hear something new from the brothers, not some NY producer. Its not about "selling out", its just 99% of radio pop makes me nauseous, and I don't want see them head down that road, cause "I and Love and The Avetts", and it would hurt to see them go.
A mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says, "Get out! We don't serve your kind here." The mushroom says, "Why not? I'm a fungi!!!"
I don't know why, but I find this funny.
And also, for the philosophers in the crowd...
Rene Descartes walks into Starbucks and orders a large coffee. The barrista asks, "Would you like cream in that?" Descartes replies, "I think not." And - POOF - he disappears.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

I haven't finished a thing since I've started my life, I don't feel much like starting now.
Let’s give Johann357 the benefit of the doubt. The guy is a long time fan that has been on this board for well over three months with posts running well into the lower single digits. He has obviously given this some thought. His post was the first I had heard about a move to Warner Bros. That has me worried too. Its not a good sign that they would leave Columbia before they released even one CD on the label. I also did not know that they had moved out of NC and left their families and Dolph’s team behind. Heck now I am worried too.
Or maybe his post was the first joke in this thread.
Seriously, everyone, things change. Let me tell you a story.
I was a freshman at UGA in Athens when REM was starting out (I was at one of their early gigs - opening for The Bad Brains). I remember how everyone mourned the day that they left IRS and signed with Warner. "The music will change forever." "They'll leave Athens behind." "They'll sell out and become (horror) commercial."
Well, they did record different music - they progressed and could afford better instruments and musicians and they honed their craft. Band members left and were replaced. It happens. And, you know what, they still live in Athens. Their headquarters is still in Athens. You can still hear a brand new song on the radio and instantly know that it is REM. But, most importantly, think of the influence they've had over alternative rock music by getting their music out to an audience larger than a bunch of us drunken frat boys in a small southern college town. They're superstars, sure, but they can spread the message and have a long lasting influence.
Do I miss the early days of REM when you couldn't understand a word that Michael Stipe said on a recording and the lyrics were debated endlessly? Sure. Do I wish that they had remained a moderately successful band from the south? No.
Now, go through the above and replace the names with Avett Brothers, Concord, Ramseur, Sony, etc. You'll know how I feel about it.
--
I haven't finished a thing since I've started my life, I don't feel much like starting now.
maybe their next album could be called changesavett...they'll be all glam, wear makeup, and sing songs about outer space. too bad tin man's already spoken for.
the major labor concerns me...it does.
Yet haven't heard a song I don't like yet...not ever
Of course they are going to branch out artistically.
Why wouldn't they want to progress in the industry? Working with a such a legendary producer.
They definetly have lots of new and great music to come.
and hey thats why the older albums are so enjoyable.
"maybe their next album could be called changesavett...they'll be all glam, wear makeup, and sing songs about outer space. too bad tin man's already spoken for."
I whole heartedly agree with the REM comparison. It seems like I read an article a couple years back comparing their career path to REM's, and I think if they're handled properly by their label, they could easily have the same success right now. I believe the author of that very article said he would eat his words if they weren't on the cover of every major music magazine within the next ten years. I'd give it 5. Every time I see the Jonas Brothers on the cover of Rolling Stone (twice now) all I can think is "wrong set of brothers..."
"Seriously, everyone, things change. Let me tell you a story.
I was a freshman at UGA in Athens when REM was starting out...."
Thanks for sharing that! Wow REM opening for Bad Brains. I like the comparison though.
I have to admit I was a little "worried" at the end of last year. I remember the tears flowing in Asheville as they sang Salvation Song - it seemed they were answering my worried mind. Was always happy for them but sad for what "we" may miss going forward. Anyway - no worries now. They continue to touch my heart and life. They continue to be the humble, wonderful people that they are.
I just listened to "I and Love and You" and the tears came on the first note - - a mix of knowing today is going to be a heavy day and remembering the emotions of Portland but regardless - they still get to me. And that's all that matters.
--
The day will come, the sun will rise, and we'll be fine
No worries, Dawn, you're among friends. And I agree with your post--you mentioned two experiences that I'm really happy to have been part of and they were both amazing!
--
And your loveliness, no, it doesn't help
No, your beautiful smile don't help
I love them. I love their music. Alot. I have for years now. Their increasing fame and popularity is bittersweet at times, but I'm really and truly happy for them. I don't think they're changing in that awful way some are accusing them of. I don't think they're getting all commercial on us. I don't think they're going to start writing crappy music to make more money. I don't think they've forgotten those of us who have supported them for years. I don't think they've ever taken us for granted. They're pretty awesome people, songwriters, and musicians. And I can't ever imagine a time or condition or situation when I won't want to see them live, buy their music, or in some other way try to give them money. And that's all I'm going to say on the subject.
And now here's a couple jokes for you...
A grasshopper walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Hey, we have a drink named after you!"
The grasshopper says, "You have a drink named Steve?"
And...
There's two muffins in an oven. One muffin looks at the other and says, "Wow! It's hot in here!"
The other muffin screams, "Ahhhh! A talking muffin!"
I'll offer the same disclaimer as chilixx...I didn't say they were all that funny, but I like them.

On the topic of the band getting big. The Avetts are getting bigger and bigger. At the last show in SD I mentioned to my friends how I remember being able to walk back and forth from the bar to the front of the stage because no one was there or having an extra ticket to another show and eating it because I could not find anyone to buy it.
I am happy for them though. I am sure a time will come when I get shut out of a show and I will be completely bummed or they will play a big arena and I will not want to go. It will not be the 1st time its happened and it certainly will not be the last. In the meantime I will go to as many show as possible to get fill for when that time comes

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen
I have seen many bands change, and most times I end up hating the new sound, the new look, the new attitude of the band. The lyrics of Salvation Song, though, have never let me worry. I truly believe that if anything happens to compromise the truth, the integrity of the Avetts, they'll leave. They'll go back to making the music they love.
But that's the thing, the songs that I've heard off of the new album so far are all amazing. Are they different than songs off A Carolina Jubilee or Four Thieves Gone? Yes, but they're still amazing songs. They're still very real, very passionate songs. I've been following the band for a good while but just got to see them for the first time a few weeks ago. The place was packed, but it was the best show I've ever seen. If you think they've lost their edge, I really just have to disagree. The Avetts are the first band in forever to take hold of me and keep my interest in every song on every album. The first band I've related to on such a personal level since The Get Up Kids. I love this band and I believe in them.
I'd also like to say that sometimes I seem to avoid Emotionalism because I get to thinking that I like all the older albums more, but then I listen to it and it's honestly just as good. No matter what they write from this point forward, we've always got the old songs, though. Not to mention that live, they seem to play a nice mix of new and old, so I don't think those songs will fade into obscurity.
A band evolving their sound is great to me. one of my other favorite bands is wilco and the direction of the music changes on almost every new release, but the songs are still amazing. listen to their first record, A.M., and then listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and you will see what i mean. bands need to grow and expand their sound and thats exactly what the bros. are doing right now. AND THE SONGS ARE GREAT!!!!!!! lets all enjoy this ride.
Luvmuffin86....by mentioning changing the name to A&M I'm going to assume you're a Texas fan. If that's the case, you're welcome at my tailgate anytime!! Hook 'em baby!
As to the change, I am all for it. I think its awesome and inspiring to see these guys progress before our eyes. Thats true growth for them in their art and their personal lives. None of them are in the same place in their lives as they were when Country Was, Jubilee, etc. came out. Those changes are reflected in what they create...but you can still see their fingerprints all over it. Like another post mentioned earlier about REM...there is still no doubt its an Avett Brothers song. I'm excited for the new album and the journeys yet to come they will take us on.

Bah haha, Chilixx. I love me some lightbulb jokes.
Q. How many voyeurs does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. Only one. But, they'd much rather watch someone else do it.
