Avid Brothers

Avid Brothers

So I was in my local Best Buy (Burlington, NC) picking up a copy of Madden 09 and walking past the music section I hear a familiar tune. I&Love&You was playing on their radio channel. I thought to myself, that is cool....I wonder if it is a local radio station or one of those satellite deals that goes across all Best Buys.

Much to my dismay at the end of the song the lady DJ introduces the boys as the Avid Brothers. She obviously did not spell it outloud, but that is how it sounded. I just don't see why it is so hard to pronounce Avett correctly. A - vett. not Ah - vitt. Not Ah - vette.

I know what you mean. I hate it when people say it wrong...it drives me crazy!! Smiling

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone

I've heard a few people say Longhorne Slim the past few days. Even the woman introducing him at the concert last friday almost said Langhorne Swim.

I'll admit I first told all my friends to listen to the "Aaa Vette" brothers. Like "a veterenarian"... "a vet". (I have a hard time spelling things phonetically).

I felt like a turd when I found out the right way to pronounce it but hey... at least I knew right off the bat that they made amazing music.

I'm a bit amazed how the DJ got the "Avid" "d" out of the whole thing though. Weirdness.

this is a shame, but it's also kind of a cool way to describe the fans! Smiling

I heard the for the first time on the radio; they were being interviewed and sang a few songs. I thought they sounded great, and I wrote down who they were so I could find out more...but I thought they were the "Avid Brothers".

I heard the NPR DJ here call them Avid.

I wanna have friends.That I can trust.That love me for the man I've become not the man that I was.

Me and my stupid friends started mis pronouncing things on purpose. It was pretty for awhile but then I started doing it all the time like at work, or to people I dont know.

I am trying desperately to break the habit. Helps me!

Do the best you can and that wont go unseen

I won't lie, I definitely pronounced it wrong for the longest time. Probably about six months. BUT in my defense I only stumbled across a review of Emotionalism on a website somewhere and started listening from there. My roommate (Hi KAP!) and I figured out we had been wrong the whole time once we saw them live. We felt like idiots.

^no worries....being from not the south, I could see how you would pronounce it in a different way. But a professional DJ whose job is just reading should know how to pronounce stuff or at least look it up before recording it. Perhaps Columbia should send out a pronounciation guide with each promo/single copy

Just today I said "The AVETT Brothers" and the person I was speaking to said "like A-V-I-D?" Common mistake I suppose but I do believe you're right, DJ's should make it a point to know how to pronounce things.

I'll see you in the morning time.

So was it satellite radio or an actual radio station?

why were you buying madden 09?

yeah, I'm with zach... madden 10 just came out... actually i'm diggin NCAA Football 10 right now...

~~~Roll Tide!~~~
sorry madden 10. I am taking a year off from NCAA10 because they really haven't made huge steps with the game recently and I don't seem to have time to run both a Madden franchise and a NCAA dynasty through 4 or 5 seasons at the same time like I used to.
It was definitely either a cd that best buy ships out to play in their stores or a satelite radio best buy station. I would guess it is a CD that they send out every week.
I had it mispronounced the first time I heard about them as well. The Avetts actually joke about the common mispronunciations on Live at the Doubledoor. Its not a common name (at least anywhere I've been) and its just going to be one of those things that happen. I wouldn't let it offend me too much, at least they're getting some exposure!
The only thing dumber than mispronouncing it is getting mad when people mispronounce it. Seriously people, get over yourselves. There are more important things in life than worrying about how people pronounce their name. Correct them if possible and move on.
Winter didn't die,
She was murdered.
"and thehe Avery Brothers."
When I first starting listening, the people I introduced to the music questioned my pronunciation-citing the versions mentioned above.
I'd said it "the right way" since I'd read their name, but the first album I owned was Live Vol 2, where Seth says "Do you love Scotty Avett?" So I knew I'd been pronouncing it.
But I don't think any fans should feel like an idiot for not saying it correctly. It's really hard to know how to pronounce MANY people's last names without hearing it spoken correctly first.
I know that my last name is mispronounced the first time EVERYONE says it (and if they hear it first, they have no clue how to spell it, and my last name is only 4 letters..), so it's probably something they are used to.
And as ncsustash said about "not being from the south"...I think a lot of it IS regional. Someone from Canada or or the Western Us (or for that matter the Midwest, Northeast, Pacfic NW etc.) is going to speak differently than someone from the Southeast United States. LaFayette, pin/pen, etc (south-easterners? ya'll know what I'm talkin about..)
It's just another example of how different people see things different ways I suppose.
And random...
"Many nouns are stressed on the first syllable that would be stressed on the second syllable in other accents. These include police, cement, Detroit...behind, display..." .
"Grammar
Older SAE
* Use of the circumfix a- . . . -in'.
He was a-hootin' and a-hollerin'.
The wind was a-howlin'."
from now on whenever I am going to an Avett Brothers concert I'm going to refer to it as:
"I'm a-goin' a-Avettin'."
I should really be devoting this time to schoolwork.
Korsasil,
Im pretty sure I couldn't pronounce your username right, let alone your real one!
It happens so frequently that I usally don't worry about it. I don't really even find it strange unless someone just really botches it by saying Averette or Avert, or something like that.
blasto: it's like "coarse-uh-sill"
yeah i was in the technology center at school the other day to get my laptop up-to-date so i could access the wireless network and the desktop background on my computer is a picture of the avett brothers.The guy assigned to help me recognized them and started talking about them but pronounced their name wrong..i can't remember how he said it...But i didn't bother to correct him because, well i don't know. But his favorite songs were Paranoia and Murder in the City. Random but good times, I told him about their new album and encouraged him to go see them live!
