banjo licks
Does anyone have any scott banjo riffs? Im not talking whole songs just the stuff he adds for flair in between the vocal parts. I know a lot of Scotts banjo licks are improv but it seems he has a few go to ones, like the hammer and slide 2 frets on the b or g string (i think those are g3 and g5) or the same hammer and slide from d7 and A minor. Most of them seem to follow the 2 fret 2 fret 1 fret 2 fret 2 fret 2 fret 1 scale. I'll add these every now and then and sound good most of the time. It seems to me the simpler ones were on the earlier recordings and more recently his banjo playing has become a little more complex. I tried banjo lessons once but the teacher wanted me to be a real bluegrass picker and kept turning TAB songs to bluegrass tunes (which sounds great when a bluegrass picker plays them) I've been teaching myself the strum and pick method and kind of hit a little wall. If you have anything to add to what I have been working on or if you can add something totally new, (even if it is your lick and not Scotts) i would be grateful.

Scott's banjo technique is really tough to pick up. it's like a hybrid scruggs-style and clawhammer style. Tough to teach someone how he plays - especially considering how many strings he breaks. Check out some youtube videos and just play them over and over and over and over...
That's what I'd recommend! It also can't hurt to learn the Scruggs style of banjo pickin, as the better you get, the easier it is to figure songs out.
