Best Covers of 2009
OK, so we are driving from Ohio to Illinois to celebrate the best holiday of the year with family. My wife pops in a new CD. First I groan. Then I listen. The first two songs - Wild Horses and I Dreamed a Dream) blow me away and are instantly my favorite covers of the year. The CD is Susan Boyle's debut recording after coming in second on Britain's Got Talent.
The rest of the CD doesn't carry the weight of the opening tunes. After you're done laughing at me, download them from Itunes. It will be a great $2 investment.

Right now, I'm absolutely in love with Jim James' George Harrison cover album called Tribute To. He covers "Long, Long, Long", "Behind That Locked Door", "Love You To", "My Sweet Lord", "Sir Frankie Crisp", and "All Things Must Pass". You can listen at www.yimyames.com.

Have you heard The Abrams Brothers cover of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida?" I think of them as the Canadian bluegrass Jonas Bros, but the song is cool.

I've not heard many new covers from this year. But Now You See Them did a great rendition of Shame last weekend, and here is one of the best covers ever, although it is several years old.

@enjoicashwell....I have that on my iPod. I love that version. Check out The Gourds version on Snoop Doggs Gin and Juice. Quite refreshing indeed.

David Rawlings & Gillian Welch have done this song live for years, and I think sang and played on the original? Finally...shows up on his new release!

didn't he co-write that with Ryan Adams?
Yep, WillComply. Gillian did the backing vocals.
Y'all have to get the Dave Rawlings Machine record. Quite a few great covers on it.

The Flaming Lips - Holiday (yes, the Madonna tune) So good! Hearing Jason Isbell do a blistering cover of Big Star's When My Baby's Beside Me live a few weeks back was also a real treat.
