This IS NOT a solution.

Agreed!!! This is not helping the board. Also, the "Spam Filter" SUCKS! There is no reason my freaking link to facebook should be flagged as spam. Columbia Records, or whoever... THIS WHOLE BOARD NEEDS FIXED!

ditto all of the above.

I dont get the captcha when I post...wonder why some do and other dont.

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone

I haven't been able to post since the fourth. It keeps saying my post resembles spam and won't be accepted, without even giving me a chance to post a captcha. Seems to be working now, though.

I only get it if I paste a website address...

I love how you have to do the whole Captcha thing just to paste in a link, but links don't even work on here. I mean, I can deal, but it is annoying.

--
"Happy's not the word, you make me free."

being sysadmin for several servers, I can understand it.
However, it would be nice if it were just changed so that if you wanted to post links (since they can obviously parse that out of the post), you have to be logged in. If you are not logged in, then you are forced to do the captcha. That should be sufficient for this board.

I also could not post the other day. Very annoying

But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

Previously, they were not putting the no-follow attribute in the link, making this an ideal place for spammers to post links and try to get some search engine goodness from their efforts.

No captcha here; even with this antique IE browser.

Please talk slowly. I don't hear good anymore.

I see it every now and then...I think maybe only when I'm posting links, which I can understand, but then after that the links should be active. It doesn't drive me up the wall, but I can see how it might others.

Hey all-- I'm talking to the dev team and I need to be specific with them. Captchas can be a pain but spam is way worse and we're a big fat target. Can you be more specific?

Here's what I'm gleaning:

--Links not working from the board
--Captchas (what are your specific issues? Existence of captcha? difficulty of reading them, somthing else? And how long has this been frustrating you?
--Tinndn: When you could not post what was happening?

Wanna fix this.

Thanks,

Lars

hey lars,

i think people are upset about having to do a captcha everytime they post a link. Though as I said, I can understand why it's done. Is logging in not enough of a test to know that the poster is a human? if not logged in - show the captcha?

Also, yes, embedded links do not appear to be working - in that they are not clickable.

Also - the search feature has been disabled for a LONG time.

thanks for checking in on us!

Lars, I've only gotten captchas a few times, but some people get them a lot more than that. It appears to be worse when you post a link. Having them at all is a nuisance, in my opinion.

In addition, the search bar isn't working and hasn't for quite awhile now, though it was there briefly a couple of days ago.

If you could also find a way to alert people when they have a PM--getting an email would be ideal, b/c if you're like me, you don't sign in and out on your home computer, and there is no notification unless you are signing in. This has been a problem since the board switched over last April.

In general, there seems to be a lack of moderation. When there has been a problem, and many people comment about it for a long time, no one will respond, so more moderation would be appreciated, esp. for times when we are getting more trolls. If it were something that Ramseur, the band, Columbia, etc would be open to, I know there are some boardmembers who'd be happy to do it, but whether it's fans or management, it is needed.

That said, I really appreciate you asking about the problems now and looking into them for us!! Thank you!

Lars,

I also believe some people have not been able to post at all. The spam filter blocks them every time. I have only been blocked completely, once. The captchas don't bother me, if they are deterring the spam, but it is greatly affecting the regular board members, which seems counter productive. I also think some members are having to enter the captcha every time, regardless of whether they have included a link.

I also second the PM notification request and moderator request. There are some good folks here that could handle the job responsibly.

Thanks for checking in!

there's only one thing here worth hoping for

Everything the big Chil said so well and...

A few stickies to answer basic questions for newbies.

Elimination of the point system or at least a sticky that explains its function and purpose.

By the way, I never get a captcha 'cuz I'm always up and ready.

lockwes is correct but now i just got my first captcha.

But I also did get an e-mail notification. It was from some chick hittin' on me.......I kid you not!

Please talk slowly. I don't hear good anymore.

Hey all--

It's snowing cats and dogs here so I don't have a lot of answers right off.

I forwarded jrlooney's comment verbatim. Thanks for the summary. Stay tuned.

Zimmy, and Chil, I'm open to having moderators. Ultimately it's Dolph's call so give us a minute to discuss how to handle.

Anyone who cannot post at all should PM me and I'll look into it.

Regarding points: we know that a lot of people were ambivalent about points from the start, which is why we have been deliberating a good long time about how to use them. We still have not decided.

But here's the thing: if or when we do use them, they are NOT to be considered a comprehensive measure of your fandom (that can't be measured by points alone). We don't want it to be a competition, which is the main reason you don't see up pumping you to accumulate them. That would not be very Avett.

They ARE a rather objective measure of participation in this community. That has inherent value and we want to preserve the option to extend an extra hand to those who, like you, are active here. I can't put a timetable on it or specify anything more than that; to sum it up: Please spend lots of time here, and please don't obsess about your point totals. :-)

Thanks for your patience,

Lars

So does everybody have the "Word verification" captcha permanently located at the bottom of there Reply area now?

I have to captcha every post.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."

Oh, forgot the sticky thing--glad you guys mentioned it.

Yes to the permanent captcha now.

Oh, one more rather unimportant thing--can you explain the purpose and function of having friends on this board? (the kind in our profiles, of course.)

Thanks again, Lars!

For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

Oh, let's hear it for the squeaky wheel! It's only been......what, 3 months now?

Thanks for responding, Lars.

Since the laundry list of grievances has come up, besides the PM notifications, broken search function, captcha annoyance, spam attacks, request for stickies, and general so-what thoughts regarding points... I'm curious if you can address what role, if any, the AvettNation.com website will have in the future (it hasn't done anything since.......um.......the album came out, or maybe even prior to that?

I'll emphasize the need for post/thread moderation again. I think member moderators would be the best way to handle a board that is this active.
In addition to stickies, a general FAQ (like the board's own wiki perhaps?) might be a nice feature. And, in the list of thread subcategories, I think we're quite in need of a category devoted to "Other Artists and Music" because the General Discussion category is just too general and it's hard to keep track of as is.

Also, just have to ask one more time, is there any chance/hope whatsoever of the old posts from the old board being reintegrated to this site? The thing I think we miss most is the setlist archive that the old board contained. If there's any chance of salvaging any of that old site, even just a part of it, I'd beg y'all to salvage that piece of it. If that ship has already sailed, well, that's life.

Thank you again for checking in and hearing our requests.

Permanent captcha is my fault. Happened after I boasted that I had not had to use one yet. Or maybe it falls on Mao for complaining.

Seriously, thank you Lars for an intelligent and comprehensive response. I pictured you living in California. Glad to know you are enjoying this "snow event" along with many of us. Where's global warming when you need it?

It finally happened to me. This Capcha thing.

I didn't understand alot of what ya'll were talking about. All I can gather is that it was annoying. But does this go on with all places people post and blog on?

The Avett site is my only one.

I now also have the captcha box permanently affixed at the bottom of each page, before I can post.

Thanks a lot, Mao Sticking out tongue

Don't you guys start blaming that crap on me. I'm paranoid enough as it is.

Funny, though, how timely my rant was. I've been trying not to have outburst, but I guess I got cabin fever and needed to vent.

I look at this thread and I have a vision of a yard of dogs....just milling about and scratching. Suddenly one barks and then you have it....

a yard full of barking dogs.

That's not meant disparagingly. I love dogs. Just sharing.

@Coffeebomb: Avettnation will be back. To be honest we've been having so much fun with this site and it's been growing so fast that our hands have been full here. Despite the quiet, Avettnation has not been forgotten...

I'm back and forth with the dev team on the captcha and links and search. They are presenting me with options on captcha, and I'm expecting the other two to be fixed. Some of the delay is that we are testing a new board platform and some of the nip and tucks were put aside because a new platform would solve them in one fell swoop. But I think we're all in agreement that we should stop waiting.

FAQ is a great idea. I'll get back to you on that. As for rearranging the boards I think that's a whole thread of its own...

I don't recall the old posts issue having cropped up. I was under the impression that they were imported, just not searchable. I'll look into that.

@Bobzimmerman: California? Yikes.

Well, then where are ya, Lars? I'm in DC, so I feel the pain on the snow. are you in NYC?

with the old posts, it's the opposite--they are searchable, but you can't see the content of the very first (original) post in the thread, but the rest of the thread is visible. The biggest problem is setlists, as CoffeBomb mentioned, b/c the setlists themselves are usually in the original post.

thanks for the update!
