Charlotte show discussion

Ok. So what did we all think?

I'll start. First, thank you again to filmthingy for the generous ticket. This will be the last time I see them before the big move to Vietnam, and I appreciate your generosity.

Second, I'm just going to get this out of the way... Brett Dennen? No thanks.

But when the Avett Brothers opened with "Pretty Girl from Matthews?" That was freaking awesome. It made me think about seeing them in my very small fraternity house 6 and a half years ago and how fresh I thought their music was. And now I'm seeing them in Bojangles Coliseum. A few of the highlights included that song, "I Killed Sally's Lover," "Old Joe Clark," and the genuine sincerity of the band. I'm really happy for them, and I hope they play venues like that all over the country.

I'd also like to say the stage show and lighting were great. I usually don't comment on backgrounds and things like that, but holy cow this set-up was great.

All in all, not the best concert I've been to, but it was amazing. Good work and good luck to all involved.

P.S. - Thanks for the download!

They opened with PGF MATTHEWS?! Oh my GOSH!!! Can't wait for the rest of the list...

Sounds like an awesome show! Can't wait to hear all the stories and watch the DVD...

Maybe I misunderstood, but there's a thread going about how the show in Charlotte was being taped by Sony for a DVD.

joshwobble - If the signs are to be believed (which I imagine they are, since they were up), but they read something to the extent of "your presence here constitutes your approval to possibly be in the documentary and live DVD." So yea... I think so.

We are the true believers.

What's the download of?

Standout moment, anyone?

Angischy - They handed out free downloads of the show. It will be available Wednesday, but it's going to be edited. I'm guessing it won't include anything that hasn't been released yet.

The setlist is up now. Thanks to littledeadhead for putting that up!

Yes! Much thanks to Mary Ellen, aka littledeadhead. Laughing out loud

Thank you for posting it, despite being tired, emotional, etc.

No need to thank me. Y'all have no idea what kinda state I'm in! I'm still a mess!

Team Avett #36

lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?

I thought the show was great. It took number 1 on my TAB show list. I was front, against the rail on Joe's side. Highlights for me...

1 Seth forgetting the words to Ballad of Love and Hate and asking to start over (I recorded)
2 Slight Figure of Speech
3 Scott stopping Slight Figure of Speech because his guitar "broke" (I recorded)
4 TIN MAN!
5 Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise
6 Scott singing with Seth on Tear Down The House
7 Bonnie singing with them
8 All the talking the boys did to the audience
9 All the cameras for the DVD which was a huge surprise!
10 Ending with Salvation Song

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on
I’m scared by the way that my life is getting gone

Thanks for these details, PGWinston!

I'm replying with a few comments and also questions for anyone to answer...Still detail-starved here!
Everyone is NC has to be absolutely exhausted. Long day/night, for sure, plus all the suspense and adrenaline. Holy CRASH time now!

But stil...

1) Why do you think Seth forgot the words? Nervous/giddy/everything? Amazing and crazy!
2) Details? Puh-lease? (I can be patient, I swear!)
3) Strings, or...?
4) with TIM Man present, no less! Laughing out loud
5) Head full of curiosity, ears full of nothing....is there a vid of this somewhere, or should I hold out till September (I think I prob should)
6) They slay me with this song, every time. It is much more intense in person than on the album. Just whoa, for sure
7) That's awesome, Smiling really! How sweet, and she played or sang on Go To Sleep, too, right?
8 ) Isn't it amazing how intimate things can seem despite so many present?
9) Was this Crackerfarm in charge again? This is great to hear/see regardless....I'm sure more news will be avail soon...
10) Just in case we had any concerns...they let us know, AGAIN...that that's what they're all about. Dang it, you guys, I just LOVE this band!!!

Download?

I was there and I didn't get anything about a download. I got the poster on the way out, but I assumed we'd be emailed or something about the download after the show.

This might be a different topic all together, but part of "Tin Man" reminded me of "Burning Bridges" by the Mike Curb Congregation. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Also, "Head Full of Doubt..." is an amazingly powerful song. I think a lot of fans will enjoy it once they get their ears to it.

Ang - Bonnie sang on "Go to Sleep." Also, not much strings (aside from Bob and Joe), but there was a lot of drums. I was surprised by how many songs incorporated drums. Also, "Head Full of Doubt..." is well worth the wait. I wouldn't try to find a video... just be patient, and you won't be sorry.

Vince - That's weird you missed the downloads. They were handing the posters and downloads out right next to each, and some folks were handing out both.

We are the true believers.

They ran out of vouchers for the download (sorry to the poor girl beside me who thought she was going to get the one that I ended up snagging... but you did pretty much just cut in line. :o/).

If no one else does before then, I'll post the download info and code tomorrow.

Wow, that sucks. Do you think there's any way I could get a code? All four of the people in my group missed it as well Sad

Reiggin- Do you think there's any way you could message me that info? I'd really appreciate it.

Each download code might be different, so I would try to personal message Steph or someone to see if there's a way to get one. It doesn't hurt to ask anyway.

We are the true believers.

I thought Brett Dennen was great, btw. He seemed to win over quite a few in the crowd, too, so I doubt I'm the only one.

At least we didn't get accordion guy this time...

@angischy

1. Not sure...He starts fine and gets to "Hate reads the letter and throws it away." and loses it after...He then plays a little while smiling and then says "Im so happy right now I can barely stand it." Then says, "Im just going to go one more time you yall are ok with that" When I get the video uploaded I will post the link.
2. Great, I loved it! Theres a part where Scott does this really fast talking like in Indolence.
3. Not completely sure...Seth, on drums, Bob and Joe play on till Scott gets it fixed...Scott says "I have to use this guitar, its very important...I love the people that let me borrow it."
4. ? Dont understand your question!
5. Didnt get this one on video...but again, I LOVED it!
6. It was unbelievable! Ive never seen them sing it together. Got it on video also.
7.She sang on Go To Sleep...she never played anything.
8. I felt like there was only a handfull of people there...maybe because I was upfront.
9. Not sure at all...
10. ME TOO!!!

I really liked Brett Dennen also! Thought he was really good.

The download codes are all different. I compared mine with my friends...

Changing the plans that I’ve been setting on

So that means they can only be used once each I would assume? I would hate it if those of us not lucky enough to attend got left out. I'll pay for it!

Any idea who I would need to talk to to get a download code? I have a poster and a ticket to prove I was there.

Thats what Im thinking since each code is different...Sad

I'll trade my code for an XL limited edition T-Shirt. Okay, so that's a pretty uneven trade, I know.... but damn, I hate that they sold out right when I finally fought through the crowd to wiggle up there, only to see the guy just then mark through the "XL" and "L" on the sign. :o/

I picked up a M at the very beginning!

I'm sure folks can "share" this once they download it you guys...So be cool my babies Cool & don't freak out about the download codes.

Thanks for the comments back, Winston. #4 was referring to TimDog, our boy from Portland who was holding it down in front...Tim Dog/Tim Man/Tin Man (guess ya had to be there).

Guess so!! There was a little tin man statue on the piano!

Ballad of Love and Hate is uploading...will let it go through the night. Thought I got Tear Down the House but looks like I didnt. Sad

I think I have about TWO complaints that don't really have to do with the show itself - haha. Firstly, I was parked beside the sorority/fraternity looking mixer and missed out on seeing a lot of people Sad Second complaint, I was stuck in front of some VERY obnoxious fans, who wouldn't give it up.

BUT, overall, I had one of the best nights ever. I cried when they sang "swept away", my heart just melted into a blob at that point. I cannot wait for the DVD, and our download! I also recorded the entire encore - so Im going to try to do something with it, maybe not youtube, maybe just on here. Don't want everyone seeing what fun was had Smiling

"I am a breathing time machine, I'll take you for a ride..."

Why not? Sticking out tongue

why not what?
edit : i dont know how to splice my two videos together, either. anyone know how to?
--
"I am a breathing time machine, I'll take you for a ride..."

YouTube it and then share the link here Smiling I don't think you can upload vids to this site directly, unfortunately.

I volunteered with Avett Nation to hand out EP download vouchers and posters and I can assure you, we definitely didn't run out of either, all it took to get one was a little bit of patience. I felt like the victim of a hungry zombie hoard handing those things out haha. But yes, the vouchers are only good for one download, but I wouldn't worry about that, the music will get out there somehow.

ALSO, after Scott sang, "make sure my daughter knows I loved her, make sure her mother knows the same," and the other ending lines in "Murder in the City," was that a tear that I saw? He sort of stopped in the middle of the final progression and wiped his face, so it kind of seemed like he was crying. Even if he wasn't, I must admit that I almost did, that was a really emotional song.

--
"We love meandering.... ...without being boring (yes we do.)"

Yes, I absolutely loved that lyric change and I know I was crying if not Scott. I also cried with Salvation Song. This concert was just as magical as the two at Myrtle Beach a couple weeks ago, and confirm to me that YES, the Avetts are changing -- incredibly, they're getting even better. I was fortunate enough to be down front, to me the only place to be. Does seem intimate and it's startling to turn around and see the masses of humanity.

And I really liked Brett Dennen. He was strange looking and acting, but he and his band have found at least two new fans.

Thanks to the lovely Bonnie for Swept Away and Go to Sleep. I know their parents must so proud!

Reading all these posts makes me so emotional!! I love hearing about all the little hiccups, like Seth forgetting the words and Scott stopping for a broken string. That's what makes these boys so amazing, occurrences that would throw any other band for a loop, and with TAB, it just makes them better and more enduring. And ending with 'Salvation Song,' that gives me goose bumps. It's like telling all of us Avett lovers that they are not selling out to the corporate music big guns. Thanks all of you for all these wonderful details. It makes me feel a little like I was there. I love these guys!! Their music has been such a blessing to me.

lnevedal

Man, y'all. It must have been so emotional. I know I would have lost it during murder and probably many other times throughout the night. Thanks for the details. Can't wait to see some videos and THE DVD.

Oh, to have been there.........

--
At the end of the set, the old man who was going to be behind the wheel for the long haul home said, "Boys, that gave me God bumps."

Unless I missed it, I didn't read how they played with their studio drummer Mike Marsh.

Anyways, MIke sat in during several songs and pounded on the drums so Scott didn't have to. I didn't mind it one bit.

I have one extra code if anyone needs/wants it.

We were up in the endzone, a few thoughts and questions.

Bret Dennen was ok. Darling do not fear was catchy and Blessed has been played before in our church so we always enjoy it. Was he not wearing any shoes or socks ????? Anyway, he kept it short and got out of the way.

Jim Avett was hanging with the folks right next to us while tailgating. Snapping a few pics and chatting with fans...good stuff.

Loved seeing folks with their teen sons and daughters, seniors, and even a few kiddies.

Was hoping to hear PGF Matthews, so when they opened with it just the perfect start for me.

When Seth forgot the words during Ballad LH did he say...Im just so happy ? gotta love that.

I really enjoyed.... When I drink, Tin Man, Salina, and Salvation Song, I thought was the perfect closer.

I ended up with a few code cards, they handed me 1, and we found two more one the way to the car on the floor? ????.....Did someone take them and discard...wtf? if someone needs just let me know.

" The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated " - Gandhi

Brett Dennon had a good voice and some good songs, and he appeared pretty young still. Only problem I had with him was his overtly sexual and strange dancing in EVERY song they sang. He was dry humping his guitar for the entire set.

LOL @ Charlotte, we were wondering what was going on, looked like he was doing the chicken dance at one point.

Seth Avett: "I'm so happy right now I can barely stand it"
Here's the vid (from PGfromWinston) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shPN1I7PYZ8

Oh man! I seriously think he just got up there alone, looking out over the crowd, and couldn't believe it...lost track in his mind's thoughts for a second, and it was just an Oh-my-did-I-really-just-do-that?!? moment. Smiled straight through it, such humility and humanity.

Any estimate on the number in attendence?

Pretty Girl From Matthews

Swept Away (might still be processing)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euqZgySTJPM

BTW, at the end of the show Seth said to the crowd, "See You Soon." NYE in NC for sure.

Sunday morning and I'm still worn out and smiling. What a great weekend hanging out with everyone on Friday night at Tavern on the Tracks. Thanks to Jen for the $46 room at the Hyatt (very nice) although we had to eventually kick Marrissa out so we could get some rest Overall the show was just what I expected and I can't wait for new years.

Brett Dennon.....meh. His band was good and he sure can dance Laughing out loud , but I'll pass.

Thanks for posting, Wes.

Brett Dennen is a bit of an acquired taste, I guess. He's quirky for sure, and has an um, interesting stage presence. I saw him play once with a banana stuck in his shirt pocket the whole show. Barefoot too, I think.

He's not a bad songwriter, just probably not a great match for the pre-show Avett crowd, I'd say. He's more a glass of white wine to unwind than a shot of whiskey to fire ya up. I'm sure some folks enjoyed him though.

I thought Brett Dennen was an odd choice for the opener, but I enjoyed his set. It didn't feel like he played very long, so I wasn't getting impatient for him to get offstage. It was just fun watching him dance around.
