Chicago HOB 3/7/10 quick review

Chicago HOB 3/7/10 quick review

Unfortunately, Im not sure I can remember all of the set list. Anyways, we definitely got some rare ones at hob tonight. Atmosphere was amazing as always and Scott and Seth were definitely on fire tonight. Ones I remember:

the fall!!!
SFOS
Shame
head full of doubt
the lowering
I and love and you
kick drum
january wedding
laundry room
paranoia
ballad of love and hate
love like the movies!!!!
Go to sleep
matrimony(new version)
colorshow
traveling song(slow version)
murder in the city
where have all the average people gone
PGF chile

encore:
yardsale!!
Salvation song
November blue

the order is a little messed up, but definitely one of the best shows ice ever been to. Great set and great show overall!

Ok I forgot to add one the best parts of the show!! Ballad of love and hate was mostly a capella!! Seth couldn't quite get his guiter in tune where he wanted it and just belted it out in a Capella in perfect pitch!! So epic and avettconvert got video so everybody will see it!!

That a capella was a treat, ktpthomas! So purdy! I'm glad he had technical difficulties...

And Pretty Girl from Chile rawked! Wonderful songs that we were gifted tonight. Just wonderful.

I don't think they would have done November Blue as the third encore if this little gal beside me hadn't made a big ol' NOVEMBER BLUE! sign and pointed it out to Scott. He was gracious and generous and gave her a little winky-poo after he sang it for her. Awwww. Smiling

And their cousin who lives in Chicago, Gina, was a guest drummer for Colorshow tonight. How sweet!

I'm so tired. More will come to me in the morn, after some rest...

holy hell! that is an amazing setlist--lots of old ones and a capella Ballad? The Lowering, Love Like the Movies (for Barbara!), their cousin on The Fall, etc, etc. You guys got an amazing one--that's so great!

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

I'm so happy they ended with November Blue. I was hoping for it all night and really disappointed when it came to the last encore, assuming that it wouldn't be a slow one... boy was I surprised! Made my night. Smiling The slowed down version of Travelin' Song was pretty cool and the Roger Miller cover was awesome! PGF Chile.... AMAZING! I wasn't super pumped to hear it, because they play it at most of the shows I see, but WOW. It rocked.

The crowd was super annoying, lots (more than usual) of drunken screaming. It especially bothered me during Seth's beautiful a capella.

I really believe Seth shined last night. I don't know if it was just me, but he seemed to steal the show.

The Lowering was such a treat. Didn't expect it, hadn't even been hoping for it (I don't think they've played I much lately). They really cracked open Matrimony for me -- I'm going to have to dig that song more deeply now. And PG from Chile -- words fail.

As for Ballad -- what kind of love is that where a major "equipment failure" just makes the whole experience BETTER. Seth looked to me like he was just overwhelmed that he could perform the song that way and have the fans go nuts for it. It was inspired, truly inspired.

Oh -- just mentioned this on my post on the Setlist board, but let me brag here too -- I got one of Seth's picks. It's a blue Star pick (starbust shaped punched out of the middle to give it more grip). It was just sitting there at arm's reach between the main set and the encore. I was relieved when Seth came back out for the encore and grabbed another from atop the keyboard -- didn't want to have to give it back!

I plan to play with it through all the Avett Bros songs I've learned, then frame it with my ticket. Neat little souvenir.

Anjanette -- It was truly a pleasure getting to meet you and Dave last night. A blessing.

Chris -- Sorry I didn't get to meet you last night. Next time!

-- Eric

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."

Seth owned that show last night ...it was wonderful!

Awesome show last night!! Listening to Ballad of Love and Hate was truly awesome...Seth couldn't get the guitar in tune just how he wanted and decided to go a capella for almost half the song. You could here a pin drop in place as everyone was waiting with baited breath for his next note. I then wondered if he had done it like that before but at the end he said "Now that was a first". Was cool to witness.

This was our 2nd Avett Brothers show and they played the two songs I wanted to hear live the most, Ballad of Love and Hate and Kick Drum Heart.

The crowd had a good vibe but after our first show being at the Canopy Club in Urbana last October (which was UNBELIEVABLE), this didn't quite match it. I think there were a good number of new fans that didn't know as many of the songs where as Urbana seemed like it was almost all hardcore fans.

As usual, my feet were killing me at the end of the night but it was totally worth it.

Great show. Great show!

Bobby B.

This being my fourth avett show i can say that this was by far the best one i have seen. The energy amazing, set list amazing, being front row seth side amazing. This was also my first time hear November Blue live so that was very exciting. Only negative comment the crowd did get a little restless waiting for the low anthem to begin. it was almost two hours of waiting for those lucky few who got in right at 7:30. other than that could not have asked for a better night. Oh and to top it all off i was my birthday. can't wait till the next show.

"But I can't go back, and I don't want to,
'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

also......if there are any more concerts at the HOB remember if you spend 15 in food at the restaurant they stamp your receipt and you get in before the line outside does.

"But I can't go back, and I don't want to,
'cause all my mistakes, they brought me to you"

Such an amazing night! I barely slept last night, I was so keyed up. I'm quite sure that was the best Avett show I've been to (though it was only my 5th, so my frame of reference isn't quite as big as a lot of folks on the board). I was up front and just off-center, never been so close before, and I can’t believe what a difference it made. Plus I was surrounded by really great fans. By that I mean they were very friendly, really into the music, generally demonstrated good show etiquette, etc. Just a great vibe. There were folks in the crowd screaming song requests at inappropriate times (and please, please, can we lay the Freebird joke to rest? Does anyone actually think this is funny anymore?), but from where I was, there was nothing too out of control.

Just to add a couple of nice moments to the ones mentioned:

1. Seth saying that they could feel a lot of love in the room and that it would be one of those nights where his cheeks would hurt from smiling. By the end of the night, I actually had a little headache because of the ridiculous grin I was wearing the entire evening.

2. The reaction from the guys when a girl shouted out in between songs "Thank you for your music!" They had huge smiles on their faces and Seth said something about how much he appreciated such a nice sincere sentiment. Just a nice honest moment.

3. Cousin Gina rocked. I just love that they had her play with them for a song, and she seemed to have a blast. Oh, and I know this has nothing to do with their music, but my goodness that is one attractive family.

4. Meeting Anjie, Mark, Barbara and her crew, Eric and his family, Dustin, etc, etc. So nice to finally meet you all in person!

5. Early entry. I was really nervous about the AA first 30 early entry deal actually working out. But the HOB staff knew exactly what was going on and were quite friendly (which is not what I have come to expect there, frankly). And the early entry for eating at HOB seemed to work well for the folks who took advantage of it.

AerixJ: Check your PM's, okay?

My random impressions:

**I agree with KateB (Hey! I didn't bump into you...Bum deal!) about Seth really shining. His voice sounds even stronger and clearer. He seems even more confident. He's just...I dunno...I'm not sure where this is going...He's just **totally** comfortable and hospitable to the crowd lately. I've never been in agreement with the assumption, but I have read articles where some consider Scott the official "Front Man," 'cuz he's the face rocking the center stage mike. I double-dog-dare them to ever single out Scott as the leader, after Seth's strong showmanship this tour. It's truly a partnership...between the brothers and supported by their intense chemistry with Bob/Joe.

**I love everyone that I met last night! Wonderful people, that Avett Nation.

**The HOB staff were hard.core. Every male had to be patted down (and then back up again and then back down once more), and EACH POCKET/NO EXCEPTIONS emptied. No joke, People, they were picking through every last piece of lint and crumpled receipts. I'm cool with making safety a priority, so I'm not really complaining, it just felt a little like over-kill. Avettconvert said that the last time she was at an HOB show, they went as far as looking at each credit card. Odd.

**Am I the only one that wishes that the Setlist and Concert Reviews sections could somehow harmonize better? It really just morphs into two separate concert review areas lately. Boo.

**Did anyone mention how Paranoia completely fell apart? ...Right in the middle when everyone was climaxing (no naughty jokes, folks) and totally pumped. I was so pumped that I'm not even completely sure what happened at that point? Something came unplugged, right? Anyway, I turned to the husband and was all, "Whoopsie. Song over, I suppose. I hate to say anything is IMpossible with the boys, but it will be tough to garner that same energy back from the room." Good ol' Bob stepped-in and dropped a rhythm and everyone came back to the vibe, dancin' and ready to sing exactly where we had left off. It was stellar.

**I met someone ELSE that experienced something similar to Mary Ellen's Cleveland AA nightmare! THIS IS HAPPENING TOO OFTEN!!!! Who wants to freaking get to a show, with the promise that their tickets, which weren't mailed to them in a timely manner, will be waiting for them at the Will Call booth...Only to find a big honkin' box of snafu? Thankfully, a call was made to AA and things worked out. But, why the stress? This is goofy as hell, Artist Arena! Doh!

**I fell going UP the steps. Don't tell anyone. I'm such a dweeb.

your secret's safe with me^

what a great show to pop my avett live cherry. i can only kick myself for not having seen them sooner. now i need to see more, it was fantastic to be amongst so many other fans. well worth being bone tired all day at work today.

I echo everyone's sentiments about this stellar show. It was lovely to meet everyone, especially the people at our dinner table. My crew had two newbies with us, and they LOVED it. One of them wrote to me afterwards: "it was indescribable. from start to finish pure heaven in sonic form."

And yes, as ktpthomas mentioned, I have video of the a cappella Ballad ... beware, it's rather bad quality b/c it's from my iPhone. But oh well, better than nothing. I was initially standing near the front with my brother & our pals, but unfortunately I got over-heated and nearly fainted...so I decided it'd be a lot better for me to enjoy the show farther back where there was better ventilation/less of a sardine-like packed crowd of folks. Unfortunately at one of my TAB shows I *did* faint and that was horrific, so as much as I disliked having to peace out of the front area, I knew it'd be worth it in the end. And it was, because I still ended up having a nice view of the stage + for once I got to see the crowd get really into it.

Last but certainly not least:

Love Like The Movies made every single one of those 1200 miles worth it.

Oh goodness gracious, YESS! LLTM! That is my little guy's favorite song, and he's been literally praying for it to be played at tomorrow's show! I'm thinking, though, that he just missed the bus on that one. Boo.

lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?

I'm so glad you posted, Bobby B.! The Urbana show was our first, and we were just blown away at the energy of that performance, and their synergy with the audience! I think we left the HOB show missing something.

We theorize that maybe the inclusion of a drummer changed the on-stage chemistry. There is something beautifully frenetic about watching Scott and Seth run all over the place, switching from instrument to instrument in the middle of a song. (and kicking the cymbals with the heel of a boot is something I will never forget!)

All that said, is it possible to have a bad Avett experience? We had such a great time, loved hearing such a wide range of songs from different albums, and Ballad was truly a gift that seemed like it was just for us. Smiling

I had no idea how lucky we were to get early entrance! We ate dinner before the show because of a well timed Groupon offer and with the extra workarounds with my wheelchair, we got to go up as soon as the doors opened. (I was on the left, near the bar, at the top of the ramp - 9 months pregnant and just days away from my due date. I'd only travel a 12 hour experience for the Avett Brothers!)

Hey y'all...I'm posting this here and on the set lists section in case some people only catch one of them, but here is a link to the video I took of Seth singing Ballad of Love & Hate a cappella. I started recording just a few seconds after he decided to ditch the guitar. Sorry you can't see him very well (this was recorded on my iPhone...no real cameras allowed) but I think the sound quality is decent.

I think this performance really drives home my long-held view that Avett the Younger has perfect pitch.

Thank goodness somebody got that!!! My friend got some great still shots of the moment too....

i agree w/ everyone that this was an amazing, amazing show. but then, i don't think the boys have ever put on a disappointing show, that i've seen. i have a huge bruise on the back of my hand from ring banging my knuckle whilst i was clapping so vigorously, my whole body hurts, especially my right foot, from dancing my ass off, and i've lost my voice from singing along through every song ( i loose my voice at every avett show ). all so worth it! hob chicago is a very cool venue and the staff are all totally nice and helpful. the beer girls walking throughout the crowd with cases of beer were a huge convenience!

thumbs up

There was a dream and one day I could see it. So, like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it. And there was a kid with a head full of doubt, so I'll scream 'til I die or the last of those bad thoughts are finally out.

So this was my third Avett Brothers show, my first in Illinois, and I will safely say this was the best. There was so much reciprocal energy between the boys and the crowd (Ballad of Love and Hate always gives me goosebumps, but this time it was grinning/screaming/wildly applauding goosebumps) and between Chicago and Boston, the Chicago fans seemed to love the old stuff way more, which was SO GOOD to see. I never thought they'd play Love Like the Movies or Traveling Song and they played both. I was maybe four from the front, in the center, immediately behind the tallest human being I've ever encountered at a concert (and somehow I could still see anything) and despite almost fainting between the Low Anthem and the Avett Brothers that was still I think one of my favorite concerts (of any group) I've ever been to.

And I will agree, Seth totally stole the show, even more than usual.

SunnySkies, that "tallest human being" was definitely ktpthomas (my brother). Glad you still managed to see everything...he is very polite but can't help the tall genes in our family Smiling

Bgav -- Yeah, that was weird with Paranoia falling apart. Scott had to switch banjos a couple of times. Seemed really pissed off about it, but still kept his cool. I was feeling for his re-stringer (I could see the guy over at stage left). But they recovered pretty well and finished the song strong.

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."

avettconvert--your brother was so nice! My comment might've sounded a little harsh but I meant it literally; I don't think I've ever met a taller person at a concert. When I almost blacked out he kept turning around to make sure I wasn't a puddle on the ground, and actually offered to help me scoot at one point. Were you the sister that had to move to the back before the show started? Because if you are, he mentioned you.
Howdy.

Oh SunnySkies, I didn't think your comment was harsh, I just thought it was kinda funny. Yes, I was the sister who had to move to the back right before the show started. I have fainted at a TAB show before and it was a less than ideal situation, to put it lightly. It was so frickin hot up there near the front! Glad you were able to enjoy the show.
