Crossroads KC show.

Crossroads KC show.

Just wanted to open a topic about the show at The Crossroads in KC. I have never been to this particular venue and was wondering if anyone has been there. I sprung for the VIP tickets ($40 more than GA). I hope it will be worth it. It will be my first outdoor TAB show. I have read that they tend to let loose a little more outdoors.
We shall see.

neebone, I've never been to Crossroads before, but my bro and I will be there. We also have VIP tickets. Less than a month away now...can't wait!!

Oh, and cookhouse here on the boards is from KC and should be able to fill you in regarding the venue.

Do you have any idea of what the "VIP" tickets include?
Four friends and me are going to the show and I had to do some pretty heavy convincing to get them to buy the VIP tickets. I know it will be worth it because its The Avett Brothers. Maybe I'll see you there. Thanks

This is what the Crossroads website has to say about the VIP tix:

"VIP tickets include: Next to venue parking, private VIP only entrance, front row viewing, VIP only bar, VIP only restrooms, waitress service, complimentary beverage (non-alcoholic) and snack service."

Front row viewing is what I'm most excited about.

Thanks Avettconvert.
Its worth the extra money alone just to get front row viewing.

Their use of the term “front row viewing” is a bit misleading. It is my understanding that the VIP ticket gets you into the front section which is a large pit area. There are no rows and obviously everyone in that section can not be at the very front. That said, it will get you in the best section and then the rest will be up to you.

Does anybody know how close Crossroads is to The Power & Light District?
Is it walkable?

Yeah, it's walkable - take 18th St. to Grand, turn right and then you'll basically run into it at around 13/14th st.

Although I have to say, I would avoid P&L district. If you want good bars in KC, head to 38th and Broadway (18th st. to Grand, turn left. Wave to my old law office. Turn left on Main, take Main to 39th Street, turn left, go to broadway and turn right), where you'll find one of my all time favorite bars, Blarney Stone. It's kind of a dump, but man is it fun. Across the street, there's another cool bar called the Lava Room. Neat loungey vibe. Lots of fun and somehow the douchebags have managed not to find it yet. On the same side of the street as Blarney, about a block or so down, there's another bar called Chez Charlie. Unfortunately, no sign, but if you see a sign for cheap Chinese food, you're about in the right place. That place is great. You would have to drive or cab it there from Crossroads, but trust me, it's worth it.

Thanks Heids.
I seen Tom Petty last summer and Coldplay last October at the Sprint Center and you are right, the douchebags are thick at the power and light district. Ragland Road was pretty cool though. A friend of mine just seen The Ozark Mountain Daredevils at Crossroads and said it was a pretty cool place to hang out. Might just stay until they kick us out.

Oh yeah, I should have said that too - Crossroads is actually a really cool bar itself. All kinds of funky memoriabilia and what not.

Another place I also should have mentioned - The Drop. It's on 31st st. (get to main the same way, but turn left on 31st st.) If you go there, tell Eddie that Heidi says hi from NYC. Also, the Velvet Dog and Sol Cantina are across the street - they have good outdoor areas and can be really fun....but watch out, the d-bag factor at all three places can be quite high, but they can also be really fun.

Man. Now I really wish I was coming for the KC show. I was glad to get the hell out of there but it's fun for a weekend here and there.

I mostly agree with everything said above, but I have seen them both in and outdoors multiple times and they are great either way. There are so many great places in KC to hang out that are not the P&L. Grinders which is part of the Crossroads has recently expanded and is a great evening, concert or not.

As for the VIP. I agree this is somewhat misleading. If you want the parking, it is literally outside the gate, but seating inside is not "front row". There are no rows at Grinders. It is basically a vary large city block that has been made into a concert venue. Their really is not a bad spot in the entire area, but if you want to be close, you will be standing. The VIP section has moved a bit over the years, but most recent concert I was at there, it was a few bleachers, that sat to the right of the stage and was like roped off or divided off.

Personally for the Avett show, I plan to be right in the front, but other concerts are also very conducive to sitting at a picnic table on Grinders Patio or even a blanket on the slope of the graduated grounds.

Does anybody know how close the Crown Plaza hotel is to Crossroads? If the only perk to VIP tickets is the parking, and the hotel is close enough to walk, then it may have been a waste of money. Oh well, live and learn right?

We saw the Avett's at Crossroad's 2 August's ago and there was no VIP section, it was all GA. I can't really picture a VIP section there, but from what I heard it is like thyluscat says: roped off bleachers off to the side. I think we are going to opt for GA tickets but VIP parking would be nice since we come from almost 3 hours away. I don't think there will be a bad "seat" in the place. I am excited to see how different this show will be from the last Crossroad's show. I am expecting tons more fans. I would suggest going early if you want something from Grinders.
Hope to see you all there.
neebone- I think they are less than a mile apart...

Thanks laurajean!

Neebone - the Crowne Plaza hotel is close to the P&L district, I think. So yeah, it's walkable. But if you have the VIP passes, you might as well as use them.

Man, I am really jealous of you guys going to this show. It would be a lot of fun to see them in KC. Have a GREAT time!

I am sorry that I haven't checked this section for awhile. I am a little hesitant to go to Grinders before the show because it might be crazy busy. We are going downtown tomorrow night and see what's close to our VIP parking lot. That way we can park, walk to eat/meet everyone and walk back to the show. PM me if you interested in joining us, we are about 10 strong so far. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Did you grow up in KC Heids? I wish you could be here. Smiling

I was a nanny in KC all throughout high school and college during the summers. After I graduated from college, I worked there for a couple of years, went to law school there and then practiced there for a few years before I moved to NYC. I found that it is not a good place for a loud, single, liberal 30-someting woman to live. It is, however, a great town with lots of friendly people and a wonderful place to raise a family. I have many dear friends there and this would have been the opportune time to re-connect with them AND see the Avetts, but - in case you haven't heard - the economy sucks, and my boyfriend and I couldn't swing the trip. I will be there in spirit though!

(PS, depending on where the VIP Parking is, you guys might consider Manny's on Southwest Blvd (cross is Wyandotte) - it's about a half mile from there and really excellent Mexican food. Good for large groups, too. Lulu's Noodles is also in the same area (SW Blvd and Central), and it has really good Thai and noodle dishes. Be sure to tell me where you guys end up!)

From their website its pretty clear that there are three types of tickets. VIP and Bleacher seats are not the same. It seems the VIP ticket will get you into the front PIT area. Bleacher tickets will allow you access to the bleachers but without any assigned seat. Standard GA tickets will get you anywhere else.

Yes Sunday, my friend who supplies their beer says that VIP is different than bleachers. He also says that having the special parking area alone, is worth it. It should be a great night, I think most of the VIP's are people from the boards.

Heids - I love Manny's! KC has some darn good Mexican food and I lived in So. Cal. for awhile! You are right about KC, it's a great place for a family, but I don't fit in so well with all the other suburban moms. Smiling I won't say anything more - I don't want to blow my cover. (insert ninja smiley here)

The other mexican place I was going to suggest was Taqueria Mexico but that's a bit farther down on the Boulevard, so you probably can't walk there from Crossroads. But man is it delicious, it's my favorite Mexican food in KC, by far. I miss good Mexican - you would think there is a ton of it in NYC, but you'd be wrong. I'm yet to find a single restaurant that has the quality of what you can get at a number of places in Kansas City.

neebone- I just noticed you are from Joplin too! That is great (not that Joplin is great). We are hoping a big group of our friends will be there. I think we will have a lot more at the Tulsa show next month. Hopefully we will see you there too!

I bought my Tulsa tickets a while back. I love Cains Ballroom. One of my favorite venues. I am taking 4 of my friends (3 first timers and 1 who just heard them for the first time a couple days ago) to the KC show. How long have you been in Joplin?
You may have seen us play before. I was in Jenkinsdirt. Anyways, I am sure I will see you at both shows.

I am awaiting a response from Crossroads about the VIP parking, time that the VIP entrance opens, etc. Grinders, the restaurant attached to Crossroads does not reserve tables and it's pretty small, so I think I will reserve a table at the Cashew which is the closest restaurant/bar at 4 blocks away. Please respond on this thread or PM me to let me know if you would like to join us before the show for dinner/drinks. I will call The Cashew on Monday with a headcount.

neebone- Crown Center is only about a mile from Grinders/Crossroads so not a bad walk, but if you have VIP parking, I would go with that. Sounds like they might be doing some different kind of configuration for this concert, so it will be interesting to see the VIP areas and where it will be. I have been to quite a few concerts at Grinders and never seen the area in front of the stage roped off...but there's always a first.

heids - My fav mexican is Rudy's over on westport road and there used to be a place on the boulevard called California Taqueria but it is not there any more. Never tried the taqueria you mentioned...Kansas City has many choices when it comes to food and yet seems to be a great secret!

Here's to Saturday Night!

Yeah, I used to eat at California Taqueria a lot - very good, but a tad bit greasy sometimes. Give the other Taqueria a try - I used to swear by their chimichangas. I don't remember Rudy's though. My second fave was Jalapeno's in Brookside.

For about the 176th time, I really REALLY wish I was coming to this show. Oh well.

Have a great night y'all - I want a full report and lots of pics!!

Thank you guys so much for all this info, my friends and I also springed for the VIP seats and I'm glad I'm not the only one worrying if it's worth it, but from reading everybody's posts I'm glad I did for parking and the ability to get up front. I will be polite but have no problem weasling my happy little ass up there Smiling!! I really hope they sing The Salvation Song... it would be the highlight for me I think. I'm so excited I can't stand it, only 2 more days of waiting!!

Why has no one commented on the actual concert here. Did you all bail out? I did, but then on a whim we stopped by just to see if they were playing. We stood on a windowsill and watched and listened form afar. They were awesome even from a sllightly longer distance and well worth standing in the rain, even if we weren't in the midst of the small crowd inside. As we stood there enjoying the rain cooled air, a group walked up to us and gave us a ticket FREE! My nephew was with us so he ventured into the conert while we stayed on the ouskirts enjoying our unusual but fun perspetive. I hope those who traveled enjoyed it too.

i will be in KC just around the show so i want to buy tickets now. the trouble is - never been at the crossroads and i'm not sure if bleachers are any better than GA. i wouldn't love to be too far away from the stage especially if the sound is compromised, on the other hand i'm 46 and would love avoid being squashed.... also there's another band and this would be a long gig..... i mean $10 is really not a difference, any thoughts, how are the bleachers there?

This will be my first Avett Brothers show. I can't wait. 15 days!!

So excited about them coming. I saw them in columbia for the first time and now am excited they are literally in my back yard. I am walking distance to grinders. I did the presale and did not see that VIP was an option. I havent been to Grinders but it looks small enough to where every seat will be good so I dont think you have to worry about the bleacher seating Gazza. Oh well. I hope everyone saw that they will be at best buy on barry road Sat morning.. Hope to see everyone there!
