its a very harsh one. I have to say that I am actually insulted by this review and embarrassed to work on the staff the publishes this newspaper. Nothing more than a music snob trying to piss everyone off.

I've been largely skipping over the DTH this semester, partly because I only have Tuesday-Thursday classes and am only on campus those days and partly because I got tired of reading Greek vs University stories every day, so I didn't see this until you posted it Zach. I am absolutely appalled and dumbfounded by this review. I do believe I'll be writing my first letter to the editor tomorrow...

I agree with all of the comments thus far (including NastyNates
). I'm also inclined to believe it's a lot like what zach and themissingavett said... there's a lot of wannabe journalists on college newspapers (hell, I was the editor in chief of mine and the shoe fits me as well). Sometimes they just get off on being the dissenter and writing something that might catch them some grief, i.e. attention.

All I have to say is this is trash. The man does not even understand the concept of Head full of doubt, Road full of promise. He is an idiot at best. Just remember Avett Family, even the greats never bat a thousand. There has to be some naysayers and this man is it. To those writing the letter to the paper, keep it graceful, but feel free to tell the man to shove it in his pie hole. LOL.

Meh. As a former DTH staffer, I've got nothing to defend this, unfortunately. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I guess? There's no accounting for taste? I dunno. Poorly written and misinformed, which is what's most upsetting about it. Oh well, you can't make everyone happy all of the time....

I do have kind of an issue with this review (and the Rolling Stone review, for that matter) calling the Avett Brothers a chamber pop act. The two bands I've heard most described as chamber pop are Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. I, for one, don't see the Avetts as chamber pop. Seems like these reviewers are just throwing whatever genre they can think of on there. Quite the shoddy review.

I was also a DTH staffer for a year, and I'm really not surprised by this review. I was never a fan of the staff, they all tended have opinions of themselves that were entirely too high.
Every one can bash UNC alllll they want, with no basis in fact and really all pure jealousy. HA. Bring it.

I actually have softened a little on the Tar Heel thing beacuse my daughter is now getting her second BS in nursing from Carolina. It's OK though. She has her NCSU alumni decal above her UNC School Of Nursing decal on the rear windshield of her car. She also carries her NCSU book bag to classes along with her red stethoscope.

frightened by those who don't see it
I didn't think that review was that harsh. I don't think that I & Love & You is as full of emotion as Emotionalism, he got that part right. The new instruments and production can seem as a drastic change to long time listeners. What he fails to point out though, is the fluid style of the band. He calls them "rockabilly group," when I consider them to be with a label.
I remember when my friend (who was an Avett fan when they were just Nemo) heard The Robinsville Sessions. He said, "this album proves you can't put them into any music genre." Bruce Lee said it best when he said, "be water my friend."
I fear that we are actually supporting his review by reading it. They probably monitor the number of hits to the site, thus he is being rewarded for his negative review by those of us who enjoy the new music.
I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that everyone does not have to agree, but I agree, it sounds like this is someone trying to make a name for himself by writing a negative review. While I was concerned about the different "sound" of the album, after listening to it (about 10,000 times in two days) I'm just not sure how someone who is a fan of the previous work could "pan" I and Love and You.
But that's just my opinion.

Ummmm, well....MJ was ARGUABLY the best B-Ball player ever. Less arguable is that Lawrence Taylor was the best defensive football player of ALL TIME....also from UNC. Be informed or quiet....if you ask me my preference for you it's the latter, but I digress.

I can agree that "It goes On and On" does sound a little Ben Foldsish. No shame in that though, he is a NC boy as well. Actually, Ben Folds could take some notes from the Avetts. This song is Ben Folds with more emotion and a dose of steriods. I LOVE IT!

Hmm well I can see how some one could see the departure from the previous albums, and perceive this album as overproduced. To refer to some of the tracks as radio friendly pop is ridiculous...

I kinda know the guy from a while back and it made me upset because i usually value his opinion. I felt similar to Jordan at first listen but it gets better everytime i listen to it, i felt the same way with the Gleam II and now i am completely in love with both releases. The album is definitely a change, but if the Avett Brothers can still give me goosebumps then anything they do is fine by me. Maybe he'll come around too.
