Die Then Grow
Die Then Grow

This song was first played tonight, and I think my face had melted off towards the end. It is so beautiful. I hope someone was able to get a video of it.

Oh..........curiosity has sooo got this kitten!!!
Did they announce the title or was this what was gleaned from the lyrics heard?
And I'm curious...was it "Die, Then Grow"...? ( I'm imagining it speaking of rebirth?) Or was it "Die Than Grow", as in "I would rather die than grow"?
My question probably won't get answered until it's played again...just wanted to toss it out there.
A friend once called me after a show to say "They played a new song called "Annie Spread"....which left me scratching my head in amazement/confusion. The title was corrected by someone else and noted as "And It Spread"...and soon after, a Team Avett motto was coined.
So happy for everyone who got to experience this show. Heck, this whole run. Thank you for sharing with those of us on the boards. So much
nice, owensnm.
True, can't tell just what they are saying. not sure it is "die and grow"
Looks like Scott's hair is longer too. is that a shadow or a beard?
Judging from listening to the song, I'm saying "Die, Then Grow"
Good stuff
ah i really wanna hear this now....
Someone posted a video on youtube, right now I'm contemplating weather I want to listen to it now or not. I'm seeing them in August and October, so do I wait and hopefully let the first time i hear it be at a show or listen to it right now? I know that TAB asks their fans to not post unreleased songs and I don't want to go against their wishes by listening to it, but I'm really curious about the whole song in general...tough decision.
I'm with you dabney! I would really love for someone to post it, but it would make me feel bad knowing thats not something they want.
I will be at the Detroit show this Saturday, maybe I will get lucky and hear it!
It's there - been up all day. No the greatest quality - I'm having trouble figuring out a few sections (almost got it). Beautiful song though.

Could you post a link?!
I searched on youtube! I found one video, but its private so I'm unable to watch.
Yep, they just changed it, sorry.

They announced the name it at the beginning, but it was hard to understand. Then they announced the name again at the end and said it was the first time they've played it. I actually haven't watched it since the show. It was beautiful.
Although I know everyone wants to see it, I'm glad the user was resepectful enought to take it down, since the band doesn't like new songs on youtube.
kinglet, will you email me the lyrics that you've figured out? thanks!

I will keep my wits about myself, disregard directions sent from hell.
Sounds like a perfect treat for Myrtle Beach. Oh yeah.

"I wonder which brother is better, which one our parents love the most...he said I love you and I'm proud of you both in so many different ways."
Did Scott or Seth sing? Was there more banjo or guitar? Oooh I'm jealous!!

Scott sang and played guitar, Seth sang harmony and played keys. No banjo at all. Can't remember if Bob played electric or standup, but there were cello and drums, as well.

Thanks chilixx! It's a little easier to be able to know that much..lol. I have to admit though, I was really hoping Seth was the writer/singer. I would love the lyrics as well, if anyone has them yet. I can't do the youtube thing with new songs either, it would make me feel too guilty...and yes I know that sounds crazy to some.

When the video was up it was Bob on electric bass
there's another video up on youtube now...for those who want to watch
I thnk the title might be "Die Than Grow" rather than "Die, Then Grow"..
One line goes "You said to me you'd rather die than grow" or something like that
Are they saying Anita? Like the title of the song that did not make the I and Love and You original 17 song cut?
yes, Ouneek.

It seems as though there is no destination for us… just a passing through and a disappearing when it is our time.
another hit will evolve once this one hits the big time
Ok, so I laid this out as best as I could tell from the two videos from the Spokane show (the full-length one taken by my good friend Deacon!)
The bridge was a little difficult to make out, so there's some gaps there and I'm not 100% on all the lyrics. Any help or suggestions would be great. This song is a BLAST to sing and play!

Shoot, well the html wouldn't let it come through laid out right, so here's a link to a .txt file with all the chords in the right places:

So glad they're starting to play new songs again! They soundchecked this one for a while in Toronto and Seth said yes, they recorded it for I & Love & You, but it didn't make the cut. I wonder why... it is BEAUTIFUL!
Those lyrics are mostly what I have except:
My sister got "and the home for there misfortune peaked" the hardest lesson learned... (I was way off with "the hunger and it's touched picked")
"To watch us fall is why they came, and fall we did ______"
"Don't look ahead, Don't look behind _____"
Clearly we'll need another version to figure these out!

I'm dreaming for a living - I've got no time for work.
it was hard to understand the lyrics at the time, so I thought it was Die Then Grow when they announced it, but I agree that according to the lyrics that I've seen that people have figured out, that I agree it's Die Than Grow, at least for part of it.
Apparently, they also soundchecked this in Boise last August, too.
And considering it was probably recorded two years ago, it's no wonder it sounded so polished and full when they finally played it for us live.

awwww i really wanna hear this!
Kinglet I couldn't make out that sentence at all so just strung a bunch of nonsense/"sound like" words together. I don't feel sure about any individual word and for sure not the sentence!! Don't think you are necessarily off-base.
They just played it again at the Newport Folk Festival (!!), and from listening to the live stream, here's what I think they sing from the missing lyrics:
Don't look ahead, don't look behind, everything we were is dead
To watch us fall is why they came, and fall we did to the higher call
Looks like NPR is archiving most of the sets they stream, so we should be able to get them later today.
Edit: The order of these posts really confuses me.
Performed for the second time today at Newport. Listen to the audio stream of the performance on NPR here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128723033
(you will need a log on ID)
Find "Rather Die Than Grow" starting between 44:40 and 45:20 (just in case you can't get the counter exactly). Excellent audio!
Thanks for posting the lyrics!
i have good video and audio from the Newport show of Die Than Grow. Is it ok to post on youtube now that the song has been played online and everyone who listened to the NPR stream has heard it? Or should I wait? Looking for advice from maybe a board moderator or a very wise avett fan who has been around here for years.
SHOULD BE FINE BRO GOOD LUCK!@!!!!!!!!!
broman if i made a list of people i would listen to on this board you would literally be the last. sorry
Until there is an answer that it has changed, my opinion is that I'd go with the most recent policy, which means that it shouldn't be on youtube.
Obviously, though, this is just what I'd guess. I am not a mod or very wise and have only been here a couple years.
If it makes the download on npr, I feel like it may be a different story, but I'm still not sure what it official.
Or, do the opposite of what Broman says.
Sunday, how's the formal policy you said they were working on coming along?
thanks chillxx. my first thought was just to keep it and i think that's what i'm going to do. i found a couple on youtube but if the boys want me to keep it kept away i will.
Apparently they had thirty songs either written or recorded for I and Love and You, it would be a shame if we never heard any of these given that the Avett Brothers are so good. A guy I met at a Jakob Dylan concert said he'd read in an interview that they had so much material up their sleeves they didnt know what to do with it. Why not think about releasing a double album if the material is this good?
double album sounds good to me. how do we make this happen?
My computer randomly decided to take me to the German version of the homepage today, and the first thing posted under "News" was the video of Die Then Grow from Spokane. I'm not sure what, if anything, that says about the unreleased material policy. Maybe just that the folks running the German version of the site aren't sure what it is either.
I remember one criticism of Four Thieves was that it had TOO MANY songs. Really. A legitimate review. Notice that releases have become consistently shorter. I hope the live CD will not follow that pattern.
For some reason my computer has taken me to the Italian page as my default for the past few days. Thinking it's not my computer...
The Italians also highlight Die Than Grow. Hm.
Also I have to say that I'm sure this will take me a long time to post because I just saw the captcha... geeeesh... are these even letters?!
Anche Italiano per mi.
very interesting that they posted that video!
I would not be surprised to see that removed shortly.
I thought it was really neat to read these lyrics. I have yet to hear this song, I would much rather see something live before youtube spoiling it. But when I did the calligraphy for I and Love and You, this song was listed as "Anita" not Die than Grow. It was not on the cd, of course. . . along with a few others that I had written. So I've often wondered about these songs, and I'm so glad to know that I will hear this one eventually. : )
I got "to watch us fall is why they came, and fall we did to the call of the highway." Don't you hate when a new song comes around and you love it so much on the first listen? Yeah, me too.
Such a good one, saw it this past friday in Cuyahoga Falls. I went from screaming and jumping to completely silent when I realized it was new!
Wasn't sure if anyone ever posted right lyrics to the bridge. Pretty sure these are correct:
To watch us fall is why they came
and fall we did to the call of the highway
Don't go home, don't look ahead
don't look behind
when everything we were is dead
Ah! Fall we did! I've been mumbling that part along.
Finally saw it live this weekend. I haven't been able to get the tune out of my head and the goosebumps to go away since then.
AAAAAMAZING.
Absolutely love this song, my girlfriend's name is Andreita so this definitely hits home for us
