Does anyone miss the banjo playing Avetts

Ok so the new album is good quality music but in my opinion it is the last thing i expected from the Avetts. I think this album would be classified as more of a pop album than any sort of rockabilly bluegrass type they are known for. Remember the lyrics to salvation song?

Replies for this Board Topic

Just for the 25...

You know who remembers the lyrics to Salvation Song? The band that wrote it.

I don't miss a thing. I've only ever seen Scott play banjo, and that hasn't changed. Go to a show, the banjo is alive and well.
This is one album that they chose to use less banjo on.
So what? Put your big girl panties (manties?) on and deal with it. Sticking out tongue

(Also, see about 20 other threads about this. It ain't no big thang, but thanks for sharing your opinion.)

As someone who first heard of the Avetts because of "I and Love and You" I can say that I appreciate their "new" sound (I wouldn't call it that but a lot of folks seem to). After buying "I and Love and You" I immediately went out and bought every album that I could find by the Avett Brothers (Emotionalism, Gleam II, Gleam I, Mignotte (I know the spelling is off and can someone pronounce that for me), Live II and Four Thieves Gone). I really appreciate listening to the albums and hearing thier sound progressing and growing. In fact, if I would have started with the earlier albums I would have thought they sounded like any other folk/bluegrass/americana band you can find in a college North Carolina town on a Friday night. Being from the south I can say in good confidence that I don't think the new album sounds pop/country. I appreciate that there seems to be more emphasis on strings and piano this album. So, I know some of you are upset that your secret band to love is now popular, but I sure am glad that I saw them on David Letterman that night and remembered my friend telling me about them a year or so ago and went and bought thier album the next day. Thier music has brought me great joy and they have gained a fan. I'm driving up to Ohio in February to see a live show and will be at MerleFest next spring to see them as well.

Like you, I like a lot of banjo. I think it is okay to like one sound a little more than the other. Whatever!

oh snap masuther!

I want to say that every time.

Yeah, Scott was talking at the video shoot this summer that they didn't plan for this album to have less banjo and more piano, it just happened that they composed this batch of songs mostly on the piano and drums. I think it's safe to say the banjo will never disappear from their music--it's still a huge component of the live shows, and I bet new songs will be written that feature it.
The banjo's on some songs, and not others, but regardless of the instrumentation, the Avett's music is still some of the best out there.

ncarolina
mignonette - men-ya-net

if you miss the banjo, go to their concert.

NCarolina... welcome,
and Mignionette ( i know i spelled it wrong) is pronounced = men-yun-ett

i love everything this band has ever done, btw.

MC4Tee - I'd hate to think about what you thought of album Country Was then... if you miss the banjo so much

but yeah - like other said, if you miss it - just go to a show... you won't miss it long

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

Chris Walken called and said, "I don't miss the banjo, what they need is some cow bell.... "

Angischy & NCarolina...nice job!

My first response to the new album was that it was different. However, I realized it was very similar to several songs on Emotionalism after giving that another listen. Yeah the music has evolved but it's all great. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy the banjo being featured but I also enjoy the new instruments the Avetts used on this album. Besides, the banjo is present on several of the new songs. People/fans seem to forget that TAB was never bluegrass. Yes they play traditional bluegrass instruments but they have never identified themselves as a bluegrass band. Just sit back and enjoy the beauty that is The Avett Brothers!

I miss intelligent threads.

Boneva, that made me laugh.

But I have to say, decide what thread to start, and go start it.

I woulda said min-youn-et. But yeah. Men-ya-net. Ha ha! Men ya net = keepers? Anyways, I thought the performance of Laundry Room on the Late Late show would have put all that "Where's my banjo?" stuff to bed. I think that if you listen close, you'll hear THE AVETT BROTHERS on I and Love and You. And that is all that any of us could have hoped and dreamed for. Now momma would tell you ladies: those boys are "men ya net!"

I like the new album. It is probably my least favorite of all of the avett albums except self titled. I hope they go back to the banjo and more folky sound.

I have been a banjo player for years and let me tell you.....The new CD did take a little bit of getting use to, at least I thought it did. Now I love it. There is a lot of banjo in the CD if you look for it. Like stated by other people, go to a concert. I have been to three in the last few months and Scott plays the banjo an ass load at each show. It's still there, just not in every song. But then again, it wasn't in every song in the past either.

But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

I'm getting annoyed with all the threads talking about how there is less banjo and its a different sound......

{i am a breathing time machine}

Yeah it is getting old, if you look at the boards a lot, but I just assume the people that start new threads about the same damn thing don't realize it.

On a different topic, do you guys feel like I and Love and You has a different sound than TAB's other albums?

There's only one thing here worth hoping for.

Just saw them last week and it was awwwwwwwwesome!

I just read a nice piece on Jambase that addresses this very (albeit repetitive) topic, yet again, however quite thoroughly, heavily quoting Seth.

The Avett Brothers: Headed North
Seth Avett opens up about the new album, getting bigger, balancing families, "Pretty Girls," why they're not a bluegrass band, the piano, drums and what makes Rick Rubin so awesome...

"Bluegrass is actually something we have never truly delved deeply into. Our American roots influences would be more in the old time country and old traditional. Even bluegrass is a little more modern thing," Seth observes. "We are less from the bluegrass tradition and more from the American roots, more Jimmy Rogers, more Woody Guthrie; a little Doc Watson, but more Blind Boy Fuller and Charlie Poole."

While some Avett Brothers fans may feel as though I and Love and You represents a change of pace, they get back to their roots more than leaving any bluegrass tendencies behind. After all, their first self-titled recording relied heavily on the piano. The fact is The Avett Brothers never really played bluegrass music as much as they play instruments associated with bluegrass.

"I don't see us going back to rock full on, just as I don't see us going back to just a banjo and a stand-up bass," Seth says. "We are kind of gathering our abilities and we're gathering different ways and finding new ways and avenues for the songs to come to fruition. Who knows what the next songs will ask for."

Really nice article. Love that last line! Good lord I love them and their perspectives on their work.

Tell me you can skip the day, and head up with me to the mountains.

I think everyone is missing the whole outline of this thread, just seein what people think of the new, less banjo style avetts, and ive probably been to more shows within the last three four or five months than almost anyone on here, as TAB traveler i can tell you all the banjo is a LOUD part of the show, its the album i was wondering about without a doubt i dig im just wondrein when country was is comin back. Isimply miss the travelin' song stuff.

Great article, angi, thank you!

Something has me acting like someone I don't wanna be...

I actually heard they're moving to a solely xylophone sound for the next album.

Iwhofollowthegleam & Mooncutter--those are both amazing ideas and I'm also shooting for both (and cracking up).

ive probably been to more shows within the last three four or five months than almost anyone on here

haha - bold sweeping statement... i hope this doesn't turn into a pissing contest

MC4Tee - you're country was statment makes no since... the banjo is as apparent on I and Love and You as it is on Country Was... take a listen you'll find that I and Love and You's banjo is about the exact same as on Country Was....

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

I think he means A Carolina Jubilee.

Any fan that claims to have been to more shows in the past 1,2,3,4, or 5 months than anyone here surely wouldnt have mistaken country was for carolina jubilee. this is a true fan we are talking about here.

I miss Big Wheels. And my Snoopy Sno Cone Maker.

MC4Tee - as Drew said... the last thing you want to do in this thread (or any other for that matter) is play the "i've been to more shows that you" game... And I say this not to be mean, but rather to help you out since you're new around here. Chances are unless you're Jim Avett in disguise, you haven't been to more shows than some people on these here boards.... Smiling

Just trying to help brother... In any case... Welcome to the boards!

i'm going to have to say that country was deffinately had more banjo than I&L&Y. and i also am a bit skeptical about the new sound. even though the songs are great and i know that the banjo is still a big part of the live show, i'm just wondering if maybe someone from outside the band (aka rick rubin) decided to use less banjo and that it possibly wasn't the brothers idea. regardless i doubt the banjo will stay gone from the studio musch longer

Jamesvs... i'm not trying to be an a$$ on this but, seriously, really listen to the two albums - the arrangement with the banjo / piano is so closely related its weird ( the band and Dolph have even been documented in saying it)... on the two albums they replace the piano with the banjo an aweful lot and in both albums the notes are played nearly exactly and the piano even drowns out the banjo a good bit.... its just we have gotten so used to hearing the old songs w/ banjo b/c they couldn't tour with a piano the past couple of years ( just the guitar, banjo, bass)

The only songs with banjo on Country Was are:
Jenny and The Summer Day
A lot of Moving ( argument can go either way, but i'll give it the benefit of the doubt - b/c its definitely not clear)
Closing Night

as for I and Love and You:
January Wedding
Laundry Room

Wouldn't it be funny if their dad came on and posted about not liking the new song?

No, I didn't think so either.

Maybe if Bob did it?
Hey...speaking of Bobby C, any word on that kiddo? Is he a proud papa yet or not?

Don't they shoot horses?

drew52deal don't worry your not being an ass, but think about it this way. you noted the banjo count is 3 for country was and 2 for ily but country was has fewer songs. plus i'm almost positive that pretty girl from matthews also has banjo which means that 4 out of the 8 songs have a banjo. and on ily the two songs is nowhere near half of the thirteen. plus i don't dislike the piano or the new album, i just noticed the lack of banjo on the new album.

yes and no.

Less banjo doesnt make the Avetts less Avett but I do feel like it suits them.

remember this lyric:
"Who will love me for the man that ive become not the man that i was"

Artists are always evolving...if they didnt the fun of making art dies.

"From the east it comes, Her love and the rising sun.."

jamesvs- about your rick rubin being the one who got rid of the banjo... that's dead wrong. in the one tree hill interview scott did (as bad as it was), scott said that when they showed up with less banjo songs RUBIN WAS SURPRISED!!! but he went with it.

I don't wish death upon people/things, but i wish this thread would die...

THAT IS ALL.

Hey, maybe if you guys had showed up on this board a few years ago the Avetts would still be using the banjo! Sorry, but now you're too late.

I remember when we hoped we'd hear some piano on stage.

Rejoice always, Mark

I personally think every past, present and future Avett album should have only banjo, guitar and bass. Every song on every album. Never change or grow...or be creative...or expand their horizons....or break new ground...Just stay the same forever.....Stagnation = success. Right?

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

thats the thing. If you read the jambase interview they are not rooted nor consider their music bluegrass to start with. More singer songwriter and country that has a banjo. So their new stuff just is evolving within that.. I think we will all see more traditional Avetts to come. After listening to both NYC shows again on disc I am reminded that they are who they are and they love live shows. We will always have the Avetts we know live no matter what. They will always give us that!!

djjuniper, where did you get the NYC shows on disc?

Always surprised to find more.

tis a secret!! lol Avetts have a no trading policy. I am a taper tho and thank them for letting us tapers to be allowed.
