Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy

For anyone not familiar with her, the combination of this imagery and this song brings me to the verge of tears. Sadly she died in 1996 unknown outside of the Washington, D.C. area.

Unknown is overstating it. I sold a ton of Eva cds at the record shop I worked at prior to her death.

I didn't realize she was known much outside of the D.C. area. At the time she died, The Other Side (with Chuck Brown) and Live at Blues Alley were the only releases. I don't know how well The Other Side sold but my understanding is Live at Blues Alley sold only a few hundred copies, mainly in the D.C. area, before she died. In any event, she's pretty well known now and word of mouth continues to spread.

I love Eva Cassidy! she has one of my favorite female voices, just flawless. that version of Fields of Gold is one of my favorite songs she covered. She grew up not too far from where I did, and apparently even worked at the garden place where my parents shopped, though I didn't learn about her til after she died (and she is much older.) I also was never sure how well known she was outside of this area, although I had heard that her version of Over the Rainbow was very popular in the UK for some reason. Was just reading about her on wikipedia--guess she did have pretty far-reaching influence, it's so sad it was after she died. Her Songbird album is my favorite.

Same here.

Songbird was our wedding song. Didn't know much about her at the time we picked it out, but it is such a beautiful song.
