Facebook Reaction to One Tree Hill Announcement

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on some of the comments over at Facebook about the One Tree Hill issue. Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing at all. One Tree Hill is one of the few shows that still promotes the music on its episode and shows the album cover and plays a sample at the end of it. Do you know how many albums I've bought simply because of that from other shows? I think it could be great for the band.

I think it's great, and it will probably reach a new crowd of people who will learn to appreciate all that is Avett!

I agree, hgevans. I don't even get on Facebook but something about those comments and all the negativity and use of the word "sellout" fired me up.

"But I loved them cause they were stepping stones . . .
. . On a staircase to you"
People know nothing of what they talk about. (that sounds familiar) So quick to pass judgement when they have never walked in their shoes. I am excited for them. Imagine all the lucky people who are about to discover them for the first time. Why shouldn't the masses have an opportunity to hear them?

I could care less what they say about "selling out" The album is amazing, their sound is amazing, their message is about anything other than of selling out! The music and lyrics speak for themselves, they aren't singing about money, sex and drugs! I think that we love this music so much that everyone of us concider it our own, and we don't want to just give away something we held so dear.
What got me most is this guy was quoting "Salvation Song" as evidence of their sellout. And everyone was telling him what a great point he was making. I've never been more passionate about a band in my life and now I'm really starting to only see more proof of that as I defend them like they're my own family.

They're the ones that wrote Salvation Song. I think they'd know if they were selling out.
What channel does One Tree Hill come on?
I may not be a fan of the show, but the music is pretty decent sometimes and most of all, I trust the guys' judgement. It's crappy that people are so negative about this is great exposure for them, but I say congratulations!!!

I don't like that genre of show but what the hell does that have to do with the Avetts? There's music on every show on TV. Whats the big friggin deal? I think that maybe the folks that freak out about this kinda of thing and yell "sellout" are only considering how TAB's growing popularity will effect them. "The new fans will be of the "One Tree Hill" clique and ruin it for me" Hey, there were idiots in the crowd before this...before Emotionalism...ect.
Jeez, relax.

How ridiculous. It's not like they are going to deny new opportunities for exposure.
Anytime a band puts their song on a show like this or commercial, they are going to hear the criticism. I look at it this way, the guys need money to live, if they feel like putting their song on a TV show to get it, that is up to them. You are not going to get around people calling them a sellout though, that goes with the territory. They will gain and lose some fans, but most likely they will gain more then they lose. Win/Win for them. Hey, Thom Yorke even has a song on the Twilight sequel soundtrack. Anything can happen. Sometimes money and taking care of your family wins out over worrying over being a sellout. Ask Langhorne Slim...I am sure he is ok with the pay day he got from Traveler's insurance. You gotz to pay the bills sometimes.
I mean, can any of you imagine TAB thinking they are too good for One Tree Hill and their viewers? I don't really care for the show either, but honestly, what were these naysayers expecting from the nicest musicians around? Pretension? Not going to happen. Obviously, they aren't having their music on One Tree Hill just to be nice, they're benefitting as well. But ya know what I'm saying.

There's only one thing here worth hoping for.

Agreed. And in the end, the song is still fantastic... which is what really matters!
Hey, TXfan, long time, no see--how's it going?
and yeah!

It's on the WB right now Ouneek. We started out taping and watching but had to give up on watching. That is some bad TV - and I have very low standards. Someone please post the time frame for Avett music so we don't have to suffer through the whole show.
On the criticism of the Avetts selling out, I think we have settled that many times over.

Hi Chilixx,
Everything is great. I stayed off the boards a little bit because I did not want to hear/read anything until I got the full album. Every time I get a new cd I like to listen to the whole thing in its entirety, without knowing much about it. It's like opening a bunch of presents at the same time. It was pretty tough, especially with all the news and all the things they put out before it officially came out, but it was worth it.
How are you doing? Still planning to join us in TX in January for the Dallas concert?
See you around!
Regardless of the poor quality of the show, it's still pretty cool to have an episode named after I and Love and You.
TX--well, there was a small minority (it seemed) of us that didn't listen until the release day (okay, the night before on NPR), but I did read some stuff and did watch the chapter videos, so I wasn't completely unspoiled--that was too hard! and I used that Christmas example too. you're very strong!
wish I could though.
I won't be coming for the show, though it would be the best birthday present ever (my bday is the 4th.) I'll have just seen the 3 shows over NYE and can't really justify the expense or time off.
masuther--it really is--are the naysayers completely oblivious to what a big deal that is??

There's no selling out with this at all (or with them, that shouldn't have to be debated)...it's just a freakin' tv show. Now, with that said, I think it's great that the producers of that freakin' tv show chose the Avetts as the music and as a big focus for this episode (after all, they did name the episode after the song). Not a great show, but it's definitely a great opportunity and exposure for them.

Any exposure they can get is great with me!
If that didn't make you tear up...I don't know what will. That ending was so perfect. I didn't expect her to be dead, but I've never seen the show before so I thought it was great. The song added just made it better. I don't even know what else to say about it except.... Hell Yea Boys. Congrats!!!!!!!!

Team Avett #5
I wanna have friends...that I can trust...that love me for the man
I've become not the man that I was.
I thought it started at 9. Gah, I even had it on the show...just had it muted. Im guessing it was played during that funeral scene?
they are haters and probably feel like they are losing their little band to a wider more pop oriented audience and that makes them a little mad. i can see that a little but you have to let your baby bird fly away from the nest. they will always know their home and will always have a special place in their heart for those of you that have been their from the beginning.
and why am i a 35 year old dude getting cold chills when i hear the avetts on one tree hill...........

the entire song played for the last five mintues inc. the funeral bit. it really fit well, actually, despite the show's suckitude. and they got mentioned at the end "tonight's show featured music by The Avett Brothers" and showed the album cover. cool

Talk about featured!!! That was really awesome. The show, not the greatest, but the way the used the song was great and really did fit with well with the story. SO PROUD!!!!! Great exposure and why WOULDN'T they take that opportunity. Incredible

Something has me being like someone I don't wanna be...
so that makes One Tree Hill and Friday Night Lights.
What other shows am I missing that have featured a TAB song?
--
Z
Go to Sleep and Denouncing NB were featured in the Matt Archbold documentary. It's in some pretty good company on that movie.
First cut of the first episode of East Bound and Down.
You can take issue with it without calling it 'selling out', which is a freshmen argument. It isn't even worth countering. I just don't like the whole demographic-focused TV/Music cross-promotion beast. It just reeks of a product. I doubt the songs are chosen out of thin air because of their artistic merit. Surely there are backroom deals that go on to decide these soundtracks.
Yeah, on the flipside if they were on East Bound and Down I would be singing a totally different tune! Funniest show of all time!
Actually Wesley, there are businesses within the industry devoted to finding the perfect song to fit a scene for shows, and working out the logistics between the network and the artist/label. I read a great article on this a while back, and actually went to the site of one of the companies that does this kind of thing. Most of them are very small, grassroots companies who employ people with a love for both music and film. Usually it has nothing to do with corporate tie ins and cross promotions. If your theory were the case, wouldn't CW ONLY play artists under the Time Warner umbrella?
Additionally, One Tree Hill is filmed in North Carolina, and I believe the creators are fans.
So after the show, my friend calls and says..."hey, a song by that band you stalk was on OTH. That song was great. Can you burn it for me?" I bet that's going on all over the place, right now.
I just find it funny that she would think it possible that I was in the dark!

Be Kind, For everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
I had the same thing happen to me, hollyster! The friend that I persuaded to give me a ride to the Iowa City concert texted me that an Avett song was on the show, and she was excited that she recognized it. And I in turn was excited that she was excited.
Best first post ever!
Having a song featured someplace does not mean the band has sold out... And about the Twilight soundtrack... One of my favorite songs, an Iron and Wine song, was featured on the Twilight soundtrack. Do I think that Iron and Wine sold out? No. It's good, honest publicity. Selling out consists of compromising art to make money and posing as something you're not, not having your honest art placed somewhere that's less than agreeable. If you can get your music heard, go for it. As long as they don't truly sell out (compromise the art itself, and make bad music, which I don't think is possible,) I'll stand by them till the end.
I think it's great....if you're a 13 year old girl.

i agree. the avetts definitely are not selling out, they are simply promoting their music. i'm so happy that they are on tv shows and magazine covers.
my only beef with one tree hill, is that i'll be the first one to complain when i'm surrounded by teeny-boppers at the next concert. and the only song they'll be singing is ILY.
"Selling out consists of compromising art to make money and posing as something you're not, not having your honest art placed somewhere that's less than agreeable."
If I were an administrator of this board, I would make this a sticky. Perfect statement to answer the perennial "sell out" question.

I've got to agree. I'll notice, think about it, realize what's going on, and glare at them.
