Famous Flower about Regina Spektor?
Famous Flower about Regina Spektor?
Posted: Thursday, February 4, 2010 - 12:35
Ok, so I know this has been discussed on here before, but it has been a long time. I keep finding stuff online about Famous Flower of Manhattan being about her. Several people have even said so on her boards. I love this song, and I must know. Help!!

Replies for this Board Topic
Its hard to tell, I can't find anything on it. sorry

So if ever someone one says to you,
Life isn't fair, get used to it
Then you should say 'Well it might be
If folks like you would let it be"
During the NYC show earlier last year (not the most recent show), Scott went to stage right and said "Regina, Regina" sans microphone. Andre, do you remember? It was the show that had Nicole Atkins as the opener.

In the summertime, when all the trees and leaves are green and the redbird sings, I'll be blue 'cause you don't want my love.
Dolph has come on here and said that it's not about her. I for one still like to believe that it is.

"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."
Yeah I remember. He has done that on more than one occasion.
probably just screwing with us. I would.

In Urbana this fall Scott sang something during FFOM about SNL the week after Regina performed on it. Other folks from that show can probably be more clear on what exactly he said.
At the big Cary show in 08, Scott fell to his knees and screamed out "Regina, Regina!"

Right....I forgot about that, kateb!
I hate feeding the gossip mill, but around 4:47.....

Also, check out 4:07 on that same video. And has Dolph really said it's not about her? The only comment I could find he's made about it on here is, "Just friends with Regina" after someone suggested she might have been a former lover (http://www.theavettbrothers.com/forums/avett-brothers-regina-spektor). I certainly don't take that to mean the song couldn't be about her since it doesn't seem to be about a past lover, just more of a "what if" or "if only" type thing. Anyway, I'm sure it's been discussed to death, and there's no way to know for sure, but this is the first I've heard about it, so I think it's kind of neat

"I've never been too good at readin' in between the lines."
I think Scott just really likes the capital of Saskatchewan. Yup, that's a Canadian reference. I know they are pronounced differently, but they're spelled the same and I couldn't resist.
FWIW I've always hoped it was true too. It would be a cool story to such a great song and the "cable TV" line would be that much more BA.
Katminelli, yeah that's the post I was refering to. I guess I just remembered/interpreted wrong. whoops.

"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."
David B., hope my post didn't come across as me being rude/saying you didn't know what you were talking about. That's not what I meant at all, but I after reading it again, I thought maybe it could have seemed that way. Sometimes I worry about things like that! Anyway, I'm with you in liking to believe it's true about Regina.

"I've never been too good at readin' in between the lines."
Regina must like hanging out with North Carolina boys-The Avetts, Ben Folds...
Who doesn't though? I mean, really?
katminelli, no worries, I didn't think you were being rude at all. I'm glad you found that thread. I really did remember/think that was what Dolph was saying in his post, but you're right, his post doesn't imply that the song's not about her.

"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."
I have no clue where I read it, but I was under the impression that Regina wrote most of the lyrics for that song and that was the connection..
If that were the case wouldn't she be credited in the liner notes?
yes i guess you are right.. I have no clue where I heard that, though.. Probably in my head.. haha
In the thread I posted above, Dolph does say that she wrote a song for them, but he doesn't say what the song was.

"I've never been too good at readin' in between the lines."
so whats the deal with regina? like how did scott and her know each other did they date? (im not much of a gossiper haha)
The avetts played a show with her in NYC early on.

"I need HEEEEELP!
But I'm on it. I'm on it."
Really, we want this to be true? Scott's married. I would hate to be his wife and have him moaning some former lover's name on stage. It would be so hard to be the wife of a muscian!
I believe that is what Dolph may have been saying. They are just friends and not lovers as most people interpret the song. I have also read in several interviews that many of their songs, even some of the pretty girl songs, are not about romantic love.
--
there's only one thing here worth hoping for
Anjanette, thanks for the link. Very informative. I'm not saying they were lovers, but there is definitely a connection.

"Happy's not the word, you make me free."
I firmly believe you can write a love song about or for someone and not be 'in love' with them. There are lots of types of love out there...and I agree it's probably about a connection.
So...I think saying "we want it to be true" just means we'd want it to be true that the song does refer to her. She's a very worthy subject in my opinion. Darling girl, beautiful songwriter. Very quirky and just herself...or so it'd seem.
There's a lot to love in people and why wouldn't that be something you'd want to celebrate in song?
That doesn't necessarily mean Scott's out there pining away for her. Or me, neither
I would love to hear Scott talk about this song and its true meaning to him, but isn't it more fun to speculate and make your own meaning of it?
I think FFOM is a lovely song and I've always considered it to be an admiration of a person, but not really a love/breakup/etc song. Maybe a 'what if?' but naaah, more an ode to someone cool. I've met a few of those in my day. Fleeting moments, but true connection made...and WHY couldn't the moment last? WHY don't I have someone like that in my daily life? WHY did I only get to experience that person for 5 minutes on a train?
Who amongst us hasn't met someone you wanna take home (like a little kid with a lost puppy, or, to mom and dad as your future spouse)? Or maybe just someone you wanted to bring into your world? To show them your ways...perhaps even rescue them from their ways or the harshness of their surroundings...?
Not unlike taking a pretty flower or rock or something home from a forest, it may only thrive in its home environment. So, you have to appreciate people and things in the moment and in their space. Their beauty may grow and bloom into much more...or it may wilt and pass, but it's nice to share a moment and enjoy its beauty while it lasts.
And oh, if I could write a nice little song about it, too...that may capture it better than even the most beautiful photograph. Yep. There's all sorts of love songs, and I don't think a confident woman with a loyal loving man would need to worry about that one bit. I'd consider myself quite lucky to have a man with a heart and a mind that could see that beauty and express it so well.
Just my take on that...for what it's worth.
FFOM could just as easily be read as a "missed connection" ad on Craigslist, I suppose....lots of ways to read a song
Very, very well said, coffeebomb! I concur

"I've never been too good at readin' in between the lines."
Absolutely well said. Of course, we can't know for sure, but I think you just summed it up quite well. Taken in that context, I have a new appreciation for the song. Thank you.
--
"Happy's not the word, you make me free."
That was beautiful coffeebomb and it gives me an explanation that I don't have to feel icky about. (As you can tell, I, too have a way with words)!
CoffeeBomb? wtf? is there a mandatory boardname change after 1300 posts?

Haha. I think Reiggin has pictures on his Facebook, but sadly no video was captured. We were probably dangerously close to being kicked out as it was, so maybe the lack of a video camera was for the best...
Dang it Blasto, it was an accident! No humans were injured in the making of this bombing (well...not physically anyways
)
No video Chris, but maybe I can do a reenactment for you (in scalding slow motion black & white) in MKE in March. You in?
Angi, that was a work of art.
Referring to the first post, not the one above.

This doesn't correspond with
"At the big Cary show in 08, Scott fell to his knees and screamed out "Regina, Regina!""
One way or the other. I still agree with darbyjo's original thought: It must be awful to be a rock star's wife.

Regina Spektor is also playing Bonnaroo 2010, so maybe we'll find out there.
Anyone going to be at the Cleveland show, House of Blues?
My sister asked Joe, and he confirmed it being about Regina.
She was disappointed though. She always thought it was about a flower.
there goes joe stirring up trouble. he'll do anything for attention.
In addition to FFOM, I've always thought the sung verses in Talk on Indolence were about times spent with Regina.
