I used all my words to fight.
With him and her and you and me.
Ahh, but it's just a waste of time.
Yeah it’s such a waste of time.
i gotta feeling this topic might go on forever...
but i personally like:
"i just want my soul to feel brand new"
"i remember crying over you, and i don't mean like a couple of tears and i'm blue. i'm talking about collapsing and screaming at the moon, but i'm a better man for having gone through it"
"then i gave to you my ugly brown coat, you made it pretty when you put it on"
"bit by the cold of december, i'm warm beside your smile"
"I wanna grow old without the pain, give my body back to the earth and not complain."
"Will I ever know silence without mental violence, will the ringing at night go away?"
"Growing stronger and loud"
"These are the words that they'll write at your grave: 'to women and whiskey this man was a slave.'"
(Okay, not the Avetts, but I learned it from them!)
lnevedal-
I believe it's "keep your clothes on, I've got all that I can take."
as for my favorite lines
I've always enjoyed Denouncing november blue, especially when they sing "I driven my car around the world, headed back into town with a girl. So I wrote a book called "LIFE IN PRISON....VOLUME I."
haha always thought that was clever.
all of the songs have good lyrics. how could I pick favorites.
"I have some "friends" they don't don't know who I am, so I write quotations around the word friends".
"Even though it's hard to hide, push my feelings all aside, I will rearrange my plans and change for you."
"love with someone, that you love to find"
I wont keep quoting lyrics. I could go on for days. I've had to many drinks.
i can't come up with just one, although my "signature" is surely one of my favorites...hehe...we could call them "favetts" (favorites + avetts...who hasn't had enough coffee? o right, it's ME...)
--
we came to break the bad
we came to cheer the sad
we came to leave behind the world a better way
i'll take one from each major studio album ( by major, I mean anything you can readily get your hands on).... these aren't necessarily my favorite songs, but definitely some of my favorite lyrics
Carolina Jubliee -
Me and God - "Now I don't doubt that The Good Book is true, What's right for me may not be right for you"
Mignonette - " I just want my life to true, just want my heart to be true, just want my words to be true, want my soul to feel brand new"
4 Thieves Gone - "Be loud let your colors show, try to keep the madness low, if they hear and its wrong and they come with torches on, yeah come on"
Emotionalism - "So when you run make sure you run, To something and not away from, Cause lies don’t need an aeroplane to chase you anywhere"
--
Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!
two that came to mind immediately because they mean a lot to me personally have already been said... but i'll write them anyway.
** "So when you run make sure you run, To something and not away from, Cause lies don’t need an aeroplane to chase you anywhere"
** "I have some "friends" they don't don't know who I am, so I write quotations around the word friends".
** and actually my signature one about Hoon means many different things to me, not just the reference to Shannon, but because as i said in a different thread, i "think" i have a good idea which song that would be referring to (based on the context of the song), if indeed it actually IS referring to a particular song... and if it is, that just makes it that much more special.
freedomrequiem, that "...its happinging right now to you" is one that always makes me think of it being their own version of john lennon's line "....life is what happens to you while youre busy making other plans".... (i love j. lennon)
--
"you're the words... in a song.. that Hoon sang to me...."
Hoon...which song are you referring to?? (Hoon song) I know which Avett song you are talking about.
--
"With paranoia on my heels; Will you love me still
when we awake and you find that the sanity has gone from my eyes?"
jp1204-- I'm thinking (and i know i could be completely wrong)... but based on how the "girl" in the song is basically comparable to everything that he loves the most, ... i would say "Soul One". Again... i'm not claiming to know anything... but thats just my best guess, and how i perceive it.
--
"you're the words... in a song.. that Hoon sang to me...."
hoon-that is a great song....I can totally see that being the song (if they are referring to a particular song)
--
"With paranoia on my heels; Will you love me still

I wanna grow old without the pain.
Give my body back to the earth and not complain.
deep stuff

Yeah it’s such a waste of time.
"don't lock your doors, everyone is poor between the lines"
"i've known others and i've loved others too, but i loved them cause they were stepping stones on a stair case to you"
"bluebirds can't fly without there wings and when we put them in a cage the world can't hear them sing, so selfish when greed sets in, possession the king of sin"
"which is the poison and which is the wine, the scent and the colors are so much alike and how much of each will it take to decide that your at the table alone"
" and cupid's arrow is backwards and bent when it's flying for me"
there are many more but here are few.....some people have already mentioned some of my favorites as well so i want rewrite them
"which is the poison and which is the wine, the scent and the colors are so much alike and how much of each will it take to decide that your at the table alone"

Of course, they're all amazing...but I have been feeling very sorry for myself lately and this morning found a lot of strength in this little bit:
Nothin's gonna change my mind, I'm travelin' a different highway.
Nothin's gonna change my mind, I'm walkin' a different line.
Nothin's gonna change my mind, you'll find what you need if you want it.
Nothin's gonna change my mind.
I'll find mine.

Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from, who did borrow from?
My favorites are not always in songs. Some guy yells, "Sing a ugly girl song!" Seth instantly replies, "There are no ugly girls!"
BobZ, I absolutely love this . I wish I had been there. I am sure that it was a knee-jerk reaction for Seth just to come out with that reply....what a sweetheart!
Wowie-Zowie! This is like picking my favorite kid!
Since this thread started, I've put on my listening ears for lines that grab me and shake me. Well, they all do, Folks. So this exercise in comparison has felt fruitless. TAB are masters of inventing some durn good lyrics. Here's a few that I found myself screeching in the shower last night:
"Show 'em all of your good parts
and leave town when the bad ones start to show."
"See I'm as true as I try to be and I must say my girl.
I tried the best to give to you all of the truest in the world."
Love songs are corny, but I'll make an exception for this gushy sweetness:
"...Come up with a master plan
A homerun hit, a winning stand
A guarantee and not a promise
That I'll never let your love slip from my hands"

i don't know about love....but i'm learning
"No one can ruin your day but yourself."
"A country girl can't be made out of anybody here"
"Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name"
and of course..............
I agree with Andrea; mine is "Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name." It gets me everytime.
"Leave your clothes on, I have all that I can stand." Such an insightful description of young love.

Late to the party, but I'll throw my two cents in.
"When you run, make sure you run to something and not away from ..."
"The mind of a girl - it's hard to understand, but I guess 'cause I'm a man."
"My god and I don't need a middleman."
"Always remember there is nothing worth sharing like the love that let's us share our name."
"I am a breathing time machine."
"If anybody ask you where you're coming from, say love"
"And I don't know if my soul is saved. Sometimes I use curse words when i pray"
I could probably go on for a couple more, but it's easy to see why I love this band. They are real people first, poets second, and musicians last.

Today (given a really upsetting email I got from my father at 3 am), we're gonna go with:
I wonder which brother is better
Which one our parents love the most
I sure did get in lots of trouble
They seemed to let the other go
A tear fell from my father's eyes
I wondered what my dad would say
He said I love you
And I'm proud of you both, in so many different ways
Yeah, it's more than a line, but it about sums it up.
