i like the drums comin back a little more....i know when i saw the picture of seth at the drumset before the album came out i was pumped....thats what i like

the songwriting.
Seth's line,
"the clock in the kitchen says two fifty five,
and the clock in the kitchen is slow."
That's just exactly perfect.

4:04 in "Living of Love"

I love that part.

wow good call elle. the breakout on living of love is amazing.

im all about when the fiddle comes back in at the end of go to sleep. it slows down a little and gets a little quieter then all of a sudden the fiddle comes back in. i dunno. i just love it.

i like in the song, shame, where it escalates into an almost beach boys sound and then sinks back down into the banjo twangy sound. i find it a beautiful transition.

*from anne on pete's computer.

"so,when you run make sure you run to something and not away from"

The way these lyrics flow gives me chills!

yeah that bridge in "shame" is unmistakeably beach boys-esque

kudos on mentioning this... by far my favorite moment on the album... breathtaking

there are so many...

definately word on the songwriting- love/hate ballad and throughout..

-how (what should be) the last two notes of the guitar solo on die die die are sung and not played
-when there's ALLMOST a scream/yell in paranoia
-all of "love"

die, die, die rules. I've probably listened to it a hundred times already.

There's a place or two where Scott's voice is doubled. He's doing his own backups. I thought that was interesting, and a first.

I love everything about the album, but "Go to Sleep" is one of my faves. I have this weird, probably unfounded, feeling that it's part 2 of "Please Pardon Yourself." Does that make sense to anyone? Maybe I'm just doing too much "literary analysis" as a Master's in English is liable to do!

There are a ton of great moments, but one of my favorite subtleties is when Seth is singing and says, "I told you...I'd rearrange my plans and change for you."(waves crashing in background) - to regress to "if its the beaches."

Yup, that's one of the first things that jumped put at me, too. Great stuff.

tinairvine, i can see where you're coming from with the please pardon yourself, pt. 2 issue, but i dont think the similarities go any further than "go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep my man" and "as i turn my head to your side of the bed, why are you awake, what's on your mind?" please pardon yourself is a love song while go to sleep (in my opinion) is about how to get rid of sin that keeps on lingering.

maybe not a subtlelty, but awesome no less:
i was on may way back up to boone, and had "the ballad of love and hate on" and right when seth sings "love sings a song as she sails through the sky" a hawk flew right ahead of me going in the same direction, and just hovered right in front of my car until "and also when she comes down," when it disappeared from view.
whoa

I like the overall finished quality of the album and how it just flows out.
I definately hear what you all mean abou tbeach boys, but I've been calling it a buddy holly (that time frame etc) sound. Yet totally distinct to the avetts. When I listen to Salina, I can't help but think of Willie Nelson when scott comes in right at the beging.
I love the humming right after the chorus on weight of lies.
Also, the staggered "blame" on shame just gets me.

i totally agree about the willy nelson reference on "shame"...i get the same vibe from "pretend love"

*anne again...my laptop is in desperate need of a new battery

Ha! I LOVE that part too! Don't know why but I just think it sounds cool!

These are all great! One of my favorites is in The Ballad of Love and Hate, when Seth sings the line "will make it back safe to her arms." I don't know what it is but he sings it a little bit different than the other lines and it is so pretty.

my absolute favorite subtlety on the new album is when seth joins scottie in singing "piss drunk" and also 1:14 (it sounds like seth yelling "let's go!")in Go To Sleep. i dance uncontrollably to that song--driving down the interstate. it's real embarassin'.

my second favorite: when seth moans after scottie sings " . . . . have i gone and failed ya?" the first time in Pretty Girl From Chile.

the whole album is genius!

I really liked that too, I would have realized it without the waves crashing, but it was a really great touch! I love if it's the beaches!

I love the part at the end of Salina where it goes into the piano and, what is that, cello? It's sooo unexpected and beautiful and sad-sounding.

this was a hot topic of debate. a friend swore that he heard a truck door slamming and driving off--to refer to the "while i go gas up the truck" line in "If It's the Beaches".
i didn't believe him--until he e-mailed dolph to ask. dolph says it's a truck!

During the Greenville show, Scott was singing Paranoia, "You can't make everybody happy all of the time." Sett inserted, "AMEN!" haha I thought it was really funny, so did everyone around me.

Then when Seth was singing, "I got secrets from you you got secrets from me
Because your so worried bout what I'm gonna think
And I'm worried too." Braxton, the guy beside me said, "And you should be!" and I caught a good smirk from Scott and Seth, and they just kept singing with a grin on their face. It was pretty fuuny.

I love the little sublets they put in their songs. They usually make me laugh or touch my heart, so they're always good! LOL

Yeah, Seth said “Amen” in Raleigh, too, haha. I love when his verse comes in in Paranoia. It’s almost like a different version of the same song b/c the difference in his voice, the notes, etc. It’s like two for the price of one.

Thanks for clarifying! Now that I listen to it even closer, I can indeed hear the truck. Waves or vehicle -- either way, it's a great tune! Smiling

My boyfriend said he heard a door slam, and I didn't believe him, but now I'm "forcing" myself to listen to this song for probably the millionth time to see if I hear it (you'd think I would have noticed by now).

So there is a sound! And it is a truck! That moment is so much more special now. I really love that whole verse, though-- it doesn't get much better than that.

When seth "stutters" and then really stutters in Will you Return
The underwater backups on Pretty Girl from S. Deigo about 3/4 thru

I agree on this one.

I also like the clock line mentioned earlier. Perfect song all around.

This one always makes me laugh: In "The Fall" When Scott sings, "well, she doesn't answer, though she knows that shes done wrong."

Seth comes in with, "And she knows it!"

haha that just makes me laugh everytime. I don't know why, but it reminds me of a buddy of mine who said the exact same thing outloud in front of a girl, but I'm pretty sure he said that for a different reason LOL... I'm sure you can figure out the reason...

I love the swell right before and during the lines, "If it's the beaches. If it's the beaches that you want than you will have them..." Reminds me of a movie soundtrack. Very emotional!

If you listen after that there is a truck door slamming...
And even after that there are dogs barking as well...
You can barely hear them right when Seth starts singing "...I've always been.."

There's 2 other little things that I like from the record...

1) how the sound changes in "Shame" at the line "...but now I'm out and I've had time to look around..."

2) the piano going into Seth's verse in "Go To Sleep"

(About #1...oh, yeah, that's an organ. I knew that. duh, Megan.)

Now which song is it that has the car door sound in it?

I would be sad.

It's a tie for me.

The faded screaming countdown 1,2,3,4 in the background after Gabriella's voice message recording ends in PGF Chile. It's almost like, "well, screaming isn't allowed on this album, but I can't help it, so make it a quiet scream.

The only spoken word in Love and Hate. "Hate sits alone on the hood of his 'CAR'". It's a killer exclamation point to Hate's predicament.
Sad

In Living of Love, the spoken word, "Lord" coming off the mic between the lines, "It can lift you up/Take you anywhere."

Kills me.

I like in The Shame these two lines...

"Okay so I was wrong about...."
"Okay so I have read the mail...."

I don't know why, but I like the fact that they say "Okay". It seems to add a certain sense of... I don't even know what.

My fiance and I were talking about that and I said "it sounds like you are getting a hug"
I love it Smiling

Mine would be Shame right before the three minute mark where the Hammond B-3 organ comes in and all of a sudden it's full on Beach Boys Pet Sounds feel with the harmonies.

I played "air piano" to that same part in my car yesterday afternoon with the windows rolled down and the volume up, Luvmuffyn. I was at the corner of 14th and Charles here in Greenville and got busted "playing" and singing by the folks in the car next to me.

hahaha! I do that all the time (and get a lot of strange looks from the unenlightened)! It would have been pretty good if I was the one who pulled up next to you. We would have been rocking out with the windows down together. Maybe next time...I've got a gold Mazda 626 with ECU and Avett stickers on the back, and I've been told I drive like a crazy person, so I might stand out.

I'll keep an eye out. Look for a silver Expedition with a TAB sticker on one side of the back window and a James Taylor sticker on the other....

I mean, you gotta be good people with that kind of vehicle decor . . . you just gotta.

We try, we try. Smiling

thank you so much for the clarification. i thought i was going crazy... i kept listening for the waves but to me it sounded like the crunch of gravel under a vehicle. and then i heard a dog bark and tried to tell myself that maybe it was a sea gull or something, lol.

Bob's work on bass on this CD is a high point for me - from start to finish. It is clearer and more in the front than any of the other cds. I especially like when he comes into 'Pretty Girl From Chile' It gets the foot tapping every time. Well done.

i love at the end of Pretty Girl From San Diego, right before the big "la la la," right after seth sings "and it goes like this" someone laughs and then echoes him.
and just the fact that everyone cheers at the end of that song. i don't know if it was the last thing they did on the album, if it took a bunch of takes, or everyone was just really happy. either way, it's a nice touch to leave that in.

Hearing the Hammond B3 kick in during Shame
The steel drum sounds in Pretty Girl From San Diego at the 1:35 mark .. I'm I right to think its the banjo run through an effect?
The switch from brushes to sticks on Living of Love at the 3:45 mark .. Oh who am I kidding there is not one moment of that song that I don't find to be brilliant
As a fan of Sir George Martin I have always had a love for well produced recordings, and I sure love this one.
