Fox theater 1/1

Avetts- great energy tonight, but please play a different venue in atlanta. i've seen the band 5 times, and the sound was awful tonight. i was in the 5th row and was able to carry on a conversation with my wife during the rock songs. thoroughly disappointing. the fox doesn't do the avetts justice.

Replies for this Board Topic

i sure love the fox -- it's a beautiful venue...i'm not familiar enough with ATL to suggest/recommend a different venue. however, I still enjoyed myself thoroughly. will it tide me over till april? i surely hoooope so Smiling

I thought the sound was great. But I was two rows past the pit. The only major problem I have with the fox is no G.A. seating. All of it are assigned. I miss the G.A. Pit. But, alas, they played a great set. Love yall and pray hard.

I was on the second row and also thoroughly enjoyed myself, though I miss the smaller venues. I was disappointed about a couple of things, though. First off, I wish the set had not been so heavy on material from I and Love and You. I love the album, but they have soooo many great songs that I think we all love hearing. The only other thing, is that I was banking on some collaboration with Langhorne, maybe even Sweet Olive Tree. Regardless, I was blessed to be there and can't wait to see them again.

I too was thinking that Langhorne would come out and maybe sing with the boys. Venue was beautiful. Second row was quite nice. I would like to see TAB at another venue in ATL. It seemed a little surreal at times.

Met several Avett Nation folks. good people:)

Great job by the security at the show. they were stealth. I have been to other shows where security was pouncing on everyone for ticky stuff. The Fox people were great at making sure the experience was good.

does anyone know the song langhorne performed unplugged?

does anyone know what Scottie Avett was commenting about when he changed up the lyrics for Paranoia?

I've got a video of the unplugged Diamonds and Gold. I'll post once it gets finished uploading.

Venue was great, crowd was awesome (compared to Asheville, for sure.)
Setlist (w/ the exception on PPY!) was disappointing. I&L&U-ed to death on this run.
Still...great energy from the band and crowd.
Best night of the 3.

That was my first time seeing a show at the Fox and I can’t understand how anyone could complain about the theater. The place was awesome. The show was not. Don’t get me wrong I liked the show. I had a lot of fun, but all and all I was let down. I read the set lists from the previous two nights and was glad I had picked Atlanta to attend. But what did I get? They did pretty much the same set list. I thought the show seemed programmed. It did not have the spontaneous feel of any of the past shows I have seen. They played with fire and passion but it just felt like it had lost some heart. Sorry to say that but it’s the feeling this fan walked away with.

i agree NC4Now. besides PPY, it was kind of a let down.

I had an awesome night last night, but like other people previously said the set list was a bit of a let down way too much I&L&Y. I realize that they have to promote this album sometime but they practically played the first five songs off the album and barely any from the other albums. This show wasn't as raw, in the sense that it didn't seem to come much from them, unlike the other shows I've been to. But they could also be tired from touring for so long. We stood outside for 30 minutes waiting for them to come out only to find that they were already in the bus and after our bodies seriously went numb we decided to leave. However, that said I enjoyed the show a lot and still walked away with a warm glow.

agree that the fox is a beautiful facility, disagree that the sound was good. frankly, it was too quiet IMO (not the crowd, the music). it was clear that the band had some issues with the sound as well. i've seen the band at the EARL and variety playhouse in atlanta, and i thought both of those venues had superior sound dynamics. perhaps it's just me, but when i see a high energy band live, i want the music LOUD!

Where were you at in the venue, jgoodson? I was 3rd row in the orchestra section and it sounded absolutely phenomenal. There were some sound issues in Knoxville, and the Civic Center just doesn't have good sound at all, but I thought the ATL show was one of the better sounding shows I've been to (and I was also at The Variety Playhouse show in 08)

I have been to the Fox for musicals and opera and other concerts and heard a bigger sound. But the fans last night I thought had a big sound competing with the guys. We sing with them. Could that damper the sound? I did see one time though that the mike did something and Scott winced.

Remember these guys could very well be tired. Their profession takes ALOT to perform and give. I am thrilled that they are selling out venues. I do agree I felt a different vibe than at other concerts but I enjoyed the set list.

The rawness is different at each show. Oh, how I wish I was sitting Seth-side when he started traveling around the stage. His passion is contagious.

Mahmad: They all came out, with Slim to boot. I heard several people that left say as they walked off, "As soon as we leave, they'll probably come out." Not that it was intentional (we gotta understand they need an half hour or so to rest and change after the show, I'm sure it drains 'em), but that actually was the case. My g/f had never met the bros, and my sister had never met Slim, so we waited. And it was COLD. Now that's dedication, and it payed off.

Not trying to rub it in (I'm really not), just saying. I'd never met Bob, and it was well worth the arctic wind to meet them all at once.

Atlanta was my first TAB concert and they were incredible! The only disappointment was the sound. The Fox Theatre is a beautiful place, but I agree with those who think the sound was not big enough. I was on my feet singing & clapping along the whole time, but at the same time could hear bits & pieces of people talking around me. It was pretty distracting actually. I guess it could possibly be the crowd noise competing with the sound, but I have been to some pretty rockin concerts & have never encountered ths before.

Anyhow, The Avett's didn't disappoint! And Langhorne Slim, WOW! I had never heard his music before & was blown away! It was definitely worth my trip from out of town & had a great time in Atlanta!

I think that there were just some sound issues in general, not so much from the band itself. Slight Figure of Speech seemed a bit off--I was really excited for it, but something seemed like it was missing. But that's pretty much my only complaint. It was my first Avett show and it was AWESOME. Would've waited to meet them but had to drive 5 hours back to Florida. Do they usually come outside? Cause I'm seeing them again in Cleveland and will have time to stick around then. Any tips on how to meet them? I just want to tell Seth, "No, thank YOU!"...cause he says thank you after every song and "you're welcome" doesn't seem like a good enough of a response. Cause they're so good.

Oh, and while I did think that I&L&Y was represented, I don't think it was TOO much. There was definitely a lot of other material there--admittedly, they were a lot of my favorites, which is probably why I'm not complaining too much.

Oh you guys, the set list was great. Who could walk away from the show after hearing a Carolina Jubilee song ( Sally's Lover) and think that there was too much I&L&U? I think them playing that song made my night. They actually played a good bit of old tunes... When a band comes out with a new album, it is expected for them to play a lot of the new stuff. So Props to the Avetts for playing both - a lot of new stuff and a lot of old stuff.

I agree that sound was kinda funky, but it wasn't the brothers ..it was definitely the venue. Venues like that can be echoey as well and it is hard for them to hear themselves which also screws w/ the sound a bit.

I have seen quite a few shows in the Fox and the sound has never been an issue. Whether it was the Kinks rocking out or Paul Simon singing Bridge Over Troubled Waters that theater always sounded great. From where I was sitting down front I did not notice a lack of volume. If it was not loud enough in the back , or in the balcony, you should not blame the venue. I did think Seth's guitar was mixed too low, as I could hardly hear it during Shame. I just thought I was too close and maybe the mix was better back a bit. That’s often the case. I have seen them at the Variety Playhouse and I would choose the acoustics in the Fox over the Variety any day of the week.

sundayrehab,

I was close to the front also. I have seen other shows at the Fox as well and have never had a problem with sound, just the opposite. But sound (or not enough) has been a problem at the last 2 Avett shows that I have been to. I heard a lot of people last night complaining about people yelling during most of the songs. There isn't a whole lot that you can do about somebody yelling between lines, obviously. But with that said, while the guys are singing I should be able to hear them over some drunk guy yelling from the balcony. That wasn't always the case last night in my opinion. So I guess all I'm saying is, TURN IT UP! Smiling

blasto- i was stage right, fifth row. loved the perspective visually, just not sonically.

nastynate: oh that sucks. yeah we waited for about 30 minutes and my friends were basically walking away and didn't want to stay so i felt bad making them wait with me. oh well, maybe next time? though, I don't know when next time will be realistically. How many people were left and they met/talked to?

This show was well worth the drive down from Asheville on four hours os sleep from ringing in the New Year with TAB. The venue was amazing first time seeing a show at the Fox and it didn't disappoint. The setlist and energy was fantastic, the show was hands down better than the New Year show, both were amazing though. Feel in love with Langhorn as well, all in all a great weekend.

The show was really great. The sound Mix was not- It wasn't the venue, though, it was the sound guys. Too much bass, no middle. Smiling
They got it worked out to an extent by the second half of the set though, it seemed. Don't diss the Fox Theatre or the band Sticking out tongue
I wish I'd waited outside. I didn't think they'd be there- figured someone would have whisked them all away.
Also- what was with all the signs on the Fox saying no cameras or recording devices? I left my camera back in the hotel room thinking it wouldn't be allowed then everyone around me had theirs. It was very upsetting Sad

Oh and anyone around orchestra center who got pictures - if you'd share, I'd be grateful!

I saw them in Knoxville and Atlanta, and I was surprised they played so many of the same songs at both of the shows. But, our seats were absolutely awesome, and I have no complaints about the show. I felt lucky to be so close and enjoyed every second of it. I was surprised to see that Joe shredded his bow on the first song. And then did it again a few songs later.

I was thrilled to get Please Pardon Yourself. I love Tin Man live and I think I've only seen it once before. My sister's boyfriend had not seen Laundry Room live yet, so that was a highlight for him. I also love Talk on Indolence as the last song. Maybe the New Years run didn't vary a lot from show to show, but New Years Day felt like a dream to me. It was wonderful and I wouldn't change a thing

Security was on it too. There were some tipsy females near us that kept running up the the stage, putting their arms on it etc. I'm all for being as close as possible but if the men in charge tell you to stay back, it's advisable to listen! They were approached several times and ended up getting ejected from the show. I do think a few of them snuck up there anyways (after one darted into our row and hid behind my sister's boyfriend when told to return to her seat).

We opted not to stand by the bus. My shirt was soaking wet and a light sweater did not keep the wind and cold from chilling me to the bone. I would have loved to meet them as a group, but I did not want to risk getting sick.

I was lucky enough to run into Bob Crawford in the hotel elevator and not be a bumbling idiot, so that was a special little moment for me.

Also, speaking of the hotel...initially, we had a few problems (room wasn't ready when my cousins got there, still wasn't ready when my sister and I arrived over an hour later...then they gave us a key to a room that was already occupied, etc). They ended upgrading us from a regular room with 2 beds to a 2 bedroom suite! There were 7 of us in my group, so that was a very welcome change!!

A great way to ring in the new year!

Here are my pictures:

Something is wrong with my camera, and the batteries keep dying quicker than they should, so I didn't take as many pictures as I normally would. There's a few pictures of our hotel, but the rest are of the show.

you got some awesome shots!

korasil...was that you that my friends and I were talking to outside of the hotel??? You told us about metting Bob and your cousin? was kinda tall, blondish?

So several of us from the Alabama crew were having a drink in the bar at the Georgian Terrace and happened to meet Langhorne there who was also grabbing a drink with some friends. we said hello and talked a little bit and he graciously took a picture with us.

So then later on stage, he dedicated "Mary" to the well-dressed group of folks he had met at the bar earlier. It was us!!! It was very exciting! my cell phone exploded as we all texted each other back and forth asking if that really just happened. it was a pretty special moment in a whole 3 day run of great shows with great people.

Smiling

Ha ha...and I thought it was a general statement! (As I must admit...I was very well-dressed). Oh well! That rocks for yall!
--
I have no selfish memorandum...no confusion for me.

Somehow when he mentioned the well dressed group I knew it was you guys.

Korasil, did we meet you outside the Georgian afterward? Tucked into the doorway?

ETA: I should've scrolled down! I was with lovewritesaletter.

The day will come, the sun will rise, and we'll be fine.

Iwhofollowthegleam: I knew we should've skipped dinner and gone straight for drinks when Langhorne mentioned you guys from the bar. Lesson learned! Congrats!

I've seen The Avett Brothers 5x now, and I'm totally in love! Their music has a lot of sentimental meaning to me, and for them to play a show on New Years Day (my birthday...that is always disregarded) meant a TON! I do miss when they would play at smaller venues (eg: Smiths Olde Bar, which they gave a shout out). We should be happy for their success, but I wanna know..... How much would I have to pay for them to play at my wedding? They would be perfect!
P.S. I also dislike the young teeny-boppers singing at the top of their lungs. Shhhhhhh!
I paid to hear the band play!

Dear Avett Brothers, great show but...TURN THAT SH#! UP! I took a couple of first timers and we sat farther away than I would like but I'm not sure if the Avett's on stage energy translated completely because of the lack of volume. I paid to hear the band play also but I prefer to sing along with the boys at a concert and couldn't really do it because I was louder than them. I think I was polite about it having asked the people on either side of me if I was disturbing them. We were lower level in the back under the upper balcony and I thought that had something to do with it but after seeing the comments from other people I can't help but wonder what happened. I still loved the concert but I'm a little disappointed for the newbies that I took along with me.

lovewritesaletter and Distraction No 76:
yup that was me!

I am regretting not waiting by the bus now. I'm such a sissy when it comes to cold.
