The Avetts sure seem to hate green rice. Anybody have any clue as to what it is, so I can be sure to avoid it?

i dunno, man...but the numerous recipes i've seen have involved any or all of the following: parsley, cilantro, spinach, bell pepper...
that spells yum to me!
Here's 1 of about a kajillion recipes I found by searching the interwebs.
Ingredients
1 cup green onions, chopped
3/4 cup bell pepper, diced
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup rice
1/4 cup parsley, chopped
3 cups chicken broth
1 teaspon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 fresh or 2 canned jalapenos, chopped
Directions
Cook onions and bell pepper in oil until soft.
Add rice, parsley, chicken broth, salt, pepper and jalapenos. Mix well. Pour into a 2 quart dish with lid. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes until rice is done and liquid is absorbed. Toss with a fork and serve.
This sounds pretty delicious actually.
Maybe the boys have acid reflux? That recipe would tear me up! (although it does sound delicious)
Maybe they hate green rice like how I think green eggs and ham sounds disgusting. Just think of green colored rice, not with all that stuff added to it.
It also sort of sounds like they're saying grain rice, which I'd imagine kids wouldn't like that much.
I always assumed it was "grain rice"
Haha! Taryn and masuther, I don't think they're quite that country! Also, here's a fun fact...during a special little interview with a friend of a friend who works at NC State's newspaper back when the Avetts performed at the NC State Homecoming thing, Scott said his worst food is Burger King hamburgers. I'm still amused that she actually asked him that.

I absolutely love that they call it "worst food." That could not be more charming.

Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from, who did borrow from?
They really are nasty. They have that fake smokey taste.
Maybe it's because I've only been eating vegetables, lean protein and whole grains this week, but a BK cheeseburger sounds like heaven right now.

I read an interview with Scott one time, and the reporter asked what green rice was. He laughed and said he didn't remember. So there you go.

"We try to not be afraid to let the song become what it’s supposed to,” says Seth, “and to not be held within the bounds of people’s expectations because we are who we are, and we get to decide what we’re supposed to be"
Oh, wow. Great Saturday reading, Stirred!
stirred--seriously, how do you do that? you are a genius. green rice sounds good to me.
this is funny:
"I was teaching banjo, which I was totally not qualified to do. As soon as I learned probably 10-12 songs, we were playing sets and I was teaching banjo. I really sort of conned my way into it."

I wanna have friends that I can trust,
That love me for the man I’ve become, not the man that I was.
Fantastic article!! Thanks Stirred.
MS: So what is green rice? (Ed. Note: On the tape, Scott’s father makes a reference to green rice.)
SA: You know, I can’t remember. There’s all kinds of stuff on there. There’s one where I tell my dad that we should take all these old people and put them in a trash bag because they’re old. I say it while we’re at church and he has to tell me to be quiet. And there’s one where my dad gets upset with us and you hear him coming from the other end of the house and he’s telling us to turn it off because we’re just not listening to him. I think he gets a little bit upset about it because he’s yelling on it. It’s funny, though.”
LOL
MS: When you go through your music, the sea seems to make a lot of appearances. Why is that?
SA: A lot of that comes from the boat symbolizing a journey and the one that we’re on mentally and physically and spiritually. That’s where that metaphor comes from and it’s hard to get off of that once you realize how appropriate it is. We’re not the only ones it affects, I know. It’s a very infectious thought. It’s just a great metaphor, I think, that has a lot to offer.
I love to hear that explained finally!
That's a great article. Thanks for posting.
What a great read! Thanks, stirred!

lildeadhead: that pen she uses to keep her setlists? it's a human-finger bone. dipped in the blood of the ones who yell out during "murder in the city". poetic, no?
I remember this article...I like the parts about Scott talking about the family recordings, which are funny and great to listen to, and Scott talking about teaching banjo. He could teach me how to play any day, except that I'm probably really frustrating and he'd give up, hand me a triangle (something everyone can play) and hate me.
