Tonight reminded me just why I love this band. I don’t have time to write a review as I need some sleep but the show was as good as it gets. The sound down front was the best I have heard at an Avett show in years. I was surrounded with great people, many of them were at their first show. I posted up a small handful of photos at
http://community.webshots.com/user/sundayrehab
Over the next few days I’ll try to look through them all and post more.

Replies for this Board Topic
It was so nice meeting you David! Thanks so much for helping us out with our backpack problem haha. The show was amazing. I'm so grateful and thankful that I got to be a part of tonight. I don't want to go home haha!
My goodness, they were on fire. Even way out in the lawn the energy was intense. I was just not expecting to see Bob there and I assure you there were tears throughout the crowd. It meant so much to all of us that he made this show.
Easily the best out of the 3 shows i've seen. Was sitting at the very front of the lawn even thought I had seats. Much much more energy than the Charlotte show. Great time
You know how folks on the board like to fantasize about the "dream" setlist? I'll be damned if we didn't witness one tonight. Other than "Talk On Indolence" and "Salvation Song" (and maybe "November Blue" or "If It's The Beaches"), I can't think of a single major song the boys left out. Definitely a show tailor-made for the Carolina fans who supported them way back when. (Three songs EACH from Mignonette and Four Thieves Gone. Almost half of Emotionalism. 'Nuff said.)
And to think I almost didn't go. THAT would've been some major regret......
sundayrehab, thank you so much for sharing your photos with us!
We were back on row X in a section, and I can attest the crowd was great back there too. I dropped my glasses, and the guy behind me showed concerned and helped me look for them (found them before I stomped them). My kids at their first concert ever were too short to see the stage performance behind taller people in front of them, and the folks on the row behind us never complained about the kids standing on their chairs. As a matter of fact, they seemed to be glad to share the experience with the kids. The fans around us were positive and having a great time. Add that factor to the fantastic Avett performance, Bob being there, and beautiful night, and wow, just wow! Thanks to the Gate City Rotary for having this!
An amazing night that started off like this:

I agree, the show was amazing! The energy from the boys, the setlist, Bob being back on stage, a perfect Carolina night...I looked at my husband and said, "I'm in heaven"!! Thanks for those pictures David and for the video reiggin!!
@reiggin....thank you so much for sharing that emotional first song with Bob...I watched with tears in my eyes. it had to be wonderful therapy for him to be back doing what he loves with his musical family for a night. God Bless.
Agreed, the best set I've seen yet. LOVE that Bob shared the night with us too, praying for his family everyday.
@reiggin thank you for capturing that moment for us who couldn't be there
i think hands down this was the most emotional avetts show i've been to. it was absolutely wonderful to see bob back on stage with the boys...i think i spent a good portion of the first part of the show with tears in my eyes. i'm really glad he came out and played, and i wish all the best to him & his family every day. overall, another great night from the band
We've been trying to see the Avett Brothers in concert for awhile. They did not disappoint!! The whole beautiful evening I felt like we were in some kind of sacred space. I could feel the love that you long-time fans were sending to Bob and his family.
I also want to thank reiggin for posting that video. I, too, watched with tears in my eyes.
We missed Bob in Knoxville on Friday, but so beautiful to see the love his band and Greensboro gave to him.
This is the final song, with Bob, Scott, and Seth singing "Down in the Valley" a cappella...

Ditto to everything above. Very emotional and energetic show.
Not to mention Bonnie joining them on stage for Swept Away. Overall incredible night!
As a side note...I'm interested in seeing if anyone here was in the group waiting behind the amphitheater for a while hoping to see the boys after the show. I met someone but didn't get their name...let me know.
@Coldufo, I waited for about thirty minutes then a friend told me that they had left right after the show.
@reiggin, You didn't happen to get that Kick Drum Heart did you? Was that awesome or what?! I managed to get Swept Away and Please Pardon Yourself on video. Once I get around to downloading them I'll put em up
@dailyfisherman, I sent you a PM.
By the way, we were also told that they left immediately, and were at one point yelled at by a Greensboro Col. Complex employee to get off the property before we got locked up (though we were standing on the sidewalk- public property.) However, later on in my boredom I walked over closer to the tour bus and spotted Scott in a window and got a wave from him.
i agree that the greensboro was extrordinarily special. i travelled about 9 hours by car to get there, and i was not disappointed! Before the show, i had the priveledge of talking to Jim Avett, who was so nice. the concert showed off every facet of the avett brothers music. i particularly enjoyed laundry room, down with the shine. prettiest thing, murder in the city, colorshow, and die die die. you could really tell that the brothers loved being back in north carolina! They put on a great show in a great venue for a great crowd! at the end of the show i had the incredible priveledge of scott shaking my hand, which literally made me the happiest person in the world! this was by far the best show ive ever been to. our prayers go out to bob and his family!
@Coldufo, I sent you a pm.
While we were walking back to our room we did notice people in the RV but decided just to go on home after hearing they left. That was a special night not only for the fans but also for the band. I don't blame them for not wanting to come out and say hey. There's always next show though!
"the folks on the row behind us never complained about the kids standing on their chairs."
We were behind you and just to your left (row y, seats 11 and 12). Your kids were fine. The only people bothering me were the yahoos behind us who wouldn't shut up and talked over the music.
I uploaded some videos on you tube. What a great show! http://www.youtube.com/user/jtcouch24
Thanks,
Jason
It was a great show with great friends. Good to see you all. My view was obstructed except for when they used the 'special mic' so I don't have too many videos this time.

Great pics David. I saw you taking pics during the show. I tried to get your attention but there was too many people between us. I agree about the sound. It was fantastic.
@reiggin, great videos!
noahdb,
I felt so guilty letting my kids stand on the chairs, but they literally couldn't see anything. I'm 5'9" myself, and I couldn't see all that great. I made sure that my tallest son was not blocking anyone shorter's view, and he was lucky their was a tall fellow behind him. My other son was only at my height, maybe shorter, while standing on the chair. I'm hoping the most annoying thing my kids did during the concert was to jump up and down during their favorite songs, haha!
I think you would've been to our right behind us more towards the center of the section as we were in seats 3-6 on row X. The folks on row Y behind us were pretty tame. Were the yahoos you sat near in the "box seats" behind row Y? I noticed a lot of those folks were glued to their chairs at times during the concert. I'm still trying to figure out how in the world they kept their butts glued down during such a performance?!?!
Amazing show. I just got back to Vancouver BC but was in Durham for a workshop. I only noticed the Avetts were playing in G'boro ten days before then put out a full court press to try and get a ticket. ducksoup found me via twitter and couriered me a ticket from NY state. Eighth row in section 3, a bit to the side but phenomenal seat nonetheless. It was so great to see them on home turf and the fans were so phenomenal. What energy.
I had only previously seen them last year at the Vancouver Folk Festival but at the time had never heard their music. After much rotation at home, I loved seeing them live again (my wife and daughter were jealous I got to go). And to realize that I caught such a special show.
That was their sister Bonnie (?) who joined them for one song (I did not know it). And they rocked so hard the cello player broke a string.
This is the best TAB show I've seen out of the 9 I have been privileged to attend. I would have loved to met the band obviously but I felt so connected with them Saturday night. The show was filled with so much emotion from Bobby being on stage and starting the night with "Hard Times Come Again No More" until they closed the show with "Down In The Valley". Through out the night I cried, I laughed, I screamed with joy. This will be a night I always remember. Each time I see them live they have "swept me away". I can wait to see what the future brings.
-"I am a breathing time machine"
This show was incredible! Great setlist, great atmosphere, so amazing to see Bob's reunion with TAB... My only complaint would be the amount of dope smoke being blown into my face up in lawn. If it were just me, I wouldn't mind it so much as I am a grown adult, however, I had my 2 young nieces with me (13 and 12 years old). The fellow who was smoking weed lit up about every 10 minutes, so it wasn't a "one and done" thing. I was livid for half of the show.
I don't care if you want to smoke illegal drugs, but when you involve me or my family (i.e. smelling it, inhaling your secondhand smoke) I get a little angry. Next time, I will find a policeman to escort you to jail. I mean, I don't fart at a show, because I don't want to offend my neighbors. Be a little more considerate of those around you.
YOU NEED TO SMOKE POT TO ENJOY THE AVETT BROTHERS? REALLY???!?
Other than that, excellent show. : )
I find it hard to put words to how wonderful the entire night was in Greensboro with the boys and so many fabulous fans...but I will try
First of all, my gut told me that Bobby would be there and I was just so happy to see him appear from backstage with Scott and Seth to start off the show with such a beautiful song and special intimate moment of brotherhood shared by them while we watched with tearful eyes. Jim Avett told me once that Bobby was just like a son to him, and you could seriously see that sibling bond on stage between him, Scott and Seth. Truly special.
There was a palpable energy beaming out from the stage from the boys to us...one that had been missing in the past run of shows without Bob. Both Scott and Seth had their dancing shoes on that night for sure! Seth with his (what I like to call) Kermit the Frog legs dance (gotta love those moves) and Seth with his very original NC country version of the sea walk...floating across the stage while hammering away at that banjo. It was obvious that Joe was so very happy to have Bobby back on stage with him. I swear after like the second song Joe's bow was almost completely shredded...a sign of some serious cello playing! And Bobby, well good ol' Bobby was in his element...beating the bass, interacting with each and every member of the band across both sides of the stage, and honestly, I don't think I have ever heard his voice sound so good, especially on Down in the Valley....harmony was perfection. Also...did anyone else notice that Scott's looking like he's been hitting the gym? Impressive Scotty
Some of my favorite moments (other than the obvious) were when we got to witness some "older brother toughness" from Scott...who lovingly coaxed his little brother to get his act together and get on with the next song..."Come on Seth!"..Seth's and Joe frozen in time on what I believe was the end of HFOD/RFOP....Bobby's shout out to give strength to a young woman named Ashley before her surgery the next day....Down with the Shine and PG from Cedar Lane always make me happy....Swept away with Bonnie, who sounded fabulous!...ahhh so basically the entire night.
I was also so very impressed by the energy and behavior of the fans. I didn't witness anyone getting out of line or acting like a DB
Everyone around me was so into the show and having a great time. Weird side note: The couple that I was next to in our seats (Row E, Section 1) was the SAME couple I was basically right next to for the GA Bojangles show...they were super friendly and cool! The wife of the couple and I shared our giddy love for Seth and his voice/dancing while our better halves were probably rolling their eyes
Oh well!
Finally, another congrats to Tiffany on her shirt design! They turned out great and I am sure they raised a lot more money for the GCR too!
"Were the yahoos you sat near in the "box seats" behind row Y? I noticed a lot of those folks were glued to their chairs at times during the concert. I'm still trying to figure out how in the world they kept their butts glued down during such a performance?!?"
That was them. They spent the entire time acting like they were hanging out at a Starbucks. They never stopped talking and were completely oblivious to the music. They DID, however, have lots to say about what their kids were going to wear for Halloween.
Several people who were on the lawn said they were surrounded by clueless and inconsiderate people too.
As far as your kids were concerned, they didn't block our view so you were fine. : )
noahdb,
Is that your dog on your avatar? It looks just like my sheltie/border collie mix...
noahdb,
I wondered how it was up on the lawn. Do you think the folks in the "box seats" were Rotary people who were offered the opportunity to come but maybe didn't really care as much as some of us? That's what we were thinking.
Did any of you happen to talk to my parents in row F, Joe-side? It was their first show, on me, and it sounded like they acted like a couple of teenagers! My Mom went on-and-on afterward, the first words out of her mouth being "I want it all to start over again!" They are in their 60's, wore red shirts, and seemed to strike up conversations with lots of long-time fans around them. I'm envious that this was their first show, yowzah!
I took some photos at the show if anyone would like to check them out: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjwwkiWQ
ashleybb,
LOVED your pictures! I was too far back (and lost my glasses during the first song) to see their faces as you have captured the emotions here! Thanks!
Thank you! That's a really big compliment. I appreciate it.
ashleybb, the black and white of the 3 of them takes my breath away. you really should post it if you haven't already. I was there and witnessed this amazing night. thanks for the pics and to the others for the great videos.
Wow, really hate to go against the grain but I'd have to disagree with those who thought this was the "best show ever." Have seen them just a few times, most recently in DC earlier this year, so I'm far from the ultimate fan, but I found them much more engaged at earlier shows. Don't get me wrong, it was a good, solid, show, a nice setlist, and thoroughly enjoyable, but they didn't strike me as nearly enthusiastic as I've seen them before. I thought they were probably just really tired and genuinely happy to be back in NC, but would be even happier when they actually got "home." I was in the first couple of rows - not bragging, just saying - and so had a different vantage point. Of course I was also periodically distracted by this drunk a-hole - overweight, red shirt, balding long-hair, goatee, tatooed-forearm - dancing wildly directly in front of the stage who though the entire night was about himself and could care less how f-in annoying anyone found him. No doubt this guy would contend he we was just being a true fan, communing with the music, etc., but he was an embarrassment and I'm sure the band thought the same. As humble, respectful, and appreciative of their good fortune the band seems to be, this guy was a self-absorbed, selfish, egomaniac.
Hello everyone, I feel later to the Avett train than I ever wish I was. I have only been listening for about 2 years, but they are now certainly my favorite band.
I never really got into taping personally, but I love live music and go to lots of shows. I have somehow managed to get a audio copy from my top a number of the best concerts I have been lucky enough to attend. Some bands don't allow it and I totally respect that. I haven't spent the time to find out if TAB do allow it (honestly I don't have it... I have a 4month old and I am a resident!), but I would LOVE to relive the show again and again. I instantly pops into my top shows! I have loved the videos, but is there an audio available? (Again, please don't flame me if this is not allowed, I don't know- so I am asking). Thanks guys! I sure hope to see the band and all of you at a show really soon.
Even if there were one or two songs that I would have loved to here... I heard the one I would have been disappointed to not hear (Murder... ps... anyone have THAT video?) and especially loved the intimate opening and closing to the show. What an end... I was left hoping they would come play more (just selfishly), but knew they couldn't come back after that. MAN. Days later I am still buzzing from that performance.
ONLY COMPLAINT!!!! I wish GSO had a screen, I was only able to get on the lawn and it was a bit hard to see. One could easily hear the raw emotion that was exploding in musical catharsis, but I wish I could have seen it a bit better. Usually don't love screens. If I wanted to watch a screen I would watch a concert DVD, but there were a few moments I wish I didn't miss.
TAB COME HOME SOON! (And after next June.... GO TO BOSTON FREQUENTLY- I know... selfish)
"Of course I was also periodically distracted by this drunk a-hole - overweight, red shirt, balding long-hair, goatee, tatooed-forearm - dancing wildly directly in front of the stage who though the entire night was about himself and could care less how f-in annoying anyone found him. ^That was me.
@ earl
I feel terrible about your experience. I have had a number of shows ruined by those around me. My wife has told me "Just ignore it" "Focus on how awesome the show is" but I show how can't at times. Sorry this happened to you.
I have no other show to compare it to... this was my first... glad I could share it with yall. But, I have watched a lot of video of them. Sometime they seem more PUMPED than the other night. I really enjoy their high energy songs (although many of my favorites are the ballads). I also know they have they root in much harder (even punk) music (which I also really enjoy), but sometimes I don't love when they scream through some songs. Not sure if this is the energy you were referring to.... I think they WERE happy to be home, I just think (and this couldn't be more speculation, because how could I know what strangers think) that they were more overcome by the emotion and what is going on personally within the band. I feel it was more intimate than energetic.... and at least that night, I was TOTALLY on board for it.
Also, the band allows taping, but the trading/distribution of shows is discouraged.
I had several friends attend this show as their first Avett concert. After putting up with me over the past 7 years they had become fans and were excited about getting to see them live. While my experience down front, on the rail, could not have been better the same could not be said for theirs. Here is part of a note I received from one friend. Let me state up front that the writer is a concert veteran having lots of festival and even metal shows under her belt.
“The concert was great...unfortunately my experience of it wasn't. The guy next to me sang at the top of his lungs (and extremely out of key) the whole time. I finally put tissue in my left ear, which helped, but then I heard the concert in mono.
Then with all the screaming (throughout the whole show and often times right into my ear), I feel like I paid to hear everyone *but* the Avett Brothers. It was particularly shocking during the ballads. It was like being at a Beatles concert at their peak, I gather!
Luckily, there were some exceptions to this. The Mr. Drunk Karaoke Singer had to use the bathroom a couple of times. I got to enjoy one of my favorite songs without much torture..."January Wedding" was so amazing, I teared up big time.
So, I won't ever go to another large venue to see them - at least not here in NC. But if I hear about one of their surprise intimate concerts in time, I'd be totally into that.”
I know we have had lots of disagreements on here about proper concert etiquette but it is getting to the point where this is hurting the band. Three out of the four people I heard back from said they would not attend another Avett show because of the rudeness of the drunken crowd. That’s sad.
Kick Drum into Colorshow was worth the price of the ticket alone, everything else was gravy!!!!!
^ Yep. It's sad, but a lot of people who are jerks at shows probably don't know that they're being jerks. Even if they do, they probably don't care how their behavior affects the band, and they certainly don't care how it affects the strangers around them just trying to enjoy the show.
Sounds like Greensboro was a special night but even the most special of nights doesn't stop folks from thinking only of themselves. That's too bad.
^^^I was worried this would be the case for this show. I guess it's inevitable when people are tailgating for hours on end and folks are there for more of a party than to hear the music. From my experience at this show, those around me in the seats were attentive to the music...when I walked through the lawn it reminded me of a party back at ECU.
As far as the show itself goes, I can't say I wasn't disappionted with the setlist. I keep expecting them to bust out some older gems at these NC shows, but it is pretty much the same stable of songs every time. I know most people at their shows don't notice or care, just my opinion.
Still, I had a great time and seeing Bob's return made it all worthwhile.
Nice shots Ashley. I hope more people will post some up. I finally got around to posting more from the show.
http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/581460586GLYBCK
I was at the front of the lawn and I could hear a ton of loud "shrieks" coming from behind me. Incredibly annoying. Nothing bothers me more than people clapping loudly during shows and 9/10 times they are not in beat with the song. I'll still go to more Avett shows but their crowds are pretty annoying at times.
Tommy, I have to agree, seeing Bob back up there was by far the best part of my entire weekend. Even though I know it doesn’t mean everything is OK for him, it seemed like he could really feel the love we were sending his way. I hope it did as much good for him as it did for us.
This was my 5th show (4th in a month) and the music was wonderful (27 songs!) and I had a great time, but after being right up front both nights in Charlottesville, I really felt I was missing something being further back in the crowd (even though I had a pretty good seat). Watching the YouTube videos confirmed my feelings; it is just a very different experience being close enough to actually see their faces, especially at this show. I'm 52 and have been to quite a few concerts but I never really felt the need to be right up front like I do with TAB. Then again, my eyesight isn't what it used to be.
In the future I think I will try to attend shows in smaller venues rather than those within driving distance.
I have not have too many problems with rude or drunk neighbors, but apparently that is the luck of the draw, regardless of where you sit. My friends had seats a few rows behind me and missed hearing most of Murder thanks to a drunk girl puking in front of them. Yuk!
Meeting fellow Avett fans has been as much fun for me as the actual concerts. I love how such a diverse group of people love the same music and (for the most part) are so happy and friendly.
Thanks to all that posted such awesome pics and videos, your time and skills are much appreciated!
My wife and I saw the Friday night show outside Knoxville and then made the drive over to Greensboro. We missed Bob Friday night and were not expecting to see him on Saturday - so it was pretty incredible to see them all take the stage together at the start. Obviously it was an emotional reunion and I was glad that Bob was able to hold it together during Hard Times. There was a palpable difference in the energy and enthusiasm the guys had compared with Friday night and I think they just played tighter and with more focus. The set list was fantastic and closing with a benediction song (in TAB fashion) sealed a transcendant night.
