Greenville SC NYE

Greenville SC NYE

The Avetts put on their hallmark high energy show in an arena that wasn't that much different than the Asheville Civic Center. The Bi-Lo Center was easy to find and easy to park and make a fast getaway from. From our seats bought presale and about halfway back and halfway up, we had a good view but missed my binoculars, which my husband left at his hunt club.... They started playing a little before 10 and opened with "Pretty Girl From Cedar Lane" (I think). Mostly their standard pieces, but a couple that I haven't heard much of included "November Blue" and "Hard Worker" which is rousing in concert and better than the recorded version. Very gratifiying to hear "November Blue" which I haven't heard in concert I don't think since July 2008. Another unusual inclusion was "At the Beach" - never heard that before except in the summer usually at the beach - imagine that. The highlight of the show for me was an incredibly hard driving version of "Matrimony". I love hearing arrangements switched up that keep things fresh for those of us on our +20th show and bound to be more interesting for the band.
Balloons fell at midnight and they played "Slight Figure of Speech" for the first song of the new year. I saw some women standing around on stage as midnight came but they eventually left. What was that? I thought maybe Jessica Lea Mayfield was showing up to sing one, maybe it was wives and galfriends looking for a NY kiss in vain! After a few 2012 songs they wrapped up with no encore, but after midnight was a sort of encore in itself.
Scott and Seth were dressed in coats and ties they got rid of pretty quickly; Scott had on suspenders that were mighty cute. I was glad to see he's letting his hair grow and not straightening it out like he did on the CMT awards show, going with the natural curl. Joe looked fabulous with pigtails. Seth is looking a little Mark Spitz-like if you're old enough to know who he is. That's a compliment. The drummer and the Bob fill-in gentleman were not shown on the monitor that much so I can't say much about them. Bob is sorely missed and loved. But the new guy is adequate. Speaking of which, there was little conversation with the crowd, one allusion to the 'extreme highs and lows' 2011 brought the band and a wish to bring this past tumultuous year to a close. Bonnie Rimi joined her brothers for one sweet song that was hard to hear; she looked beautiful with upswept hair. I was hoping Jim would appear but I did not see him anywhere, not even in the lobby. Anyone else see him?
The guy that always screams "I love you Seth!" was standing behind me. I guess it's the same guy... how many could there be?
One other thing - I thought the acoustics were lacking in the Bi-Lo Center, Somewhere I read this was one of the top hundred venues in the world? I don't understand how that can be. Not for concerts at any rate. Despite that, I was honored to once again bring in the new year with the Avetts.

This was my first time seeing The Avett Brothers, and I certainly didn't know what I've been missing. Upon entering the BiLo Center, I could sense this vibe. The people were friendly, walking up and just introducing themselves to you--these were just other concert goers. That's never happened to me before!

The Event Staff were incredibly amiable. When we got to our seats, Section 100, Row D, I was kind of bummed because the stage was so far away. I really like an intimate concert experience. Still, I'm much too old for general admission now. We settled in and again, found very friendly people all around...until the Stinky Man showed up. Not that Stinky Man devalued the Avett Experience, but I found myself seeing olfactory solace inside my shirt. At one point, because the five seats next to me were empty, Stinky Man stretched his legs over the seat (he was behind me) and I turned around to see Stinky Man Penis next to my ear. I was almost thrilled when the young, lovely and intoxicated girls showed up and Stinky Man had to put his penis back on Row E.

Danielle, the opening act, reminded me a Lili Taylor and Janis Joplin. I'm sure she was delightful but it was hard to hear her when she spoke. The BiLo Center sound was incredibly poor. However, I loved most of Danielle's songs. I was just very anxious for my first experience seeing Scott and Seth Avett in person.

See, when someone like the brothers Avett have so much incredible talent and folks, like me, get so attached to the lyrics in their songs, then there is this connection you feel with them...like they're really your soulmates, and if they would just meet you, they would equally find you attractive in every possible way. However, in an event like this, you share that soulmate attraction with about 15,000 other people. That didn't deter me from yelling "I love you Seth Avett" about 1000 times, and then realizing that maybe, just maybe, I really loved Scott more. I even tweeted asking Seth for a kiss at midnight, not realizing that every other soul-jacked fan had the same idea. Damn, I hate when I'm not as clever as I assumed I was!

The show itself did not disappoint at all. I was quite rightfully awed. The whole band is beyond definition musically. It's so raw and visceral. That's what I love about any live show, but no one does it like the Avetts...well, the Indigo Girls, but forget them for now. I really thought at some point, those brothers were going to collapse. I've never seen a 7-year old with the energy that they have. I hope they are in good contact with a cardiologist. I know exercise is great, but this is superhuman.

I haven't recovered from this experience. I can't explain how much the experience meant to me, and how incredibly envious I was to see the boys interacting with the audience when I was so far away. I have, however, been plagued by one idea. Avetts, you are amazing, and I'm sure those other moony-eyed fans out there would love to have what I, too, long for...An Avett book. A book about the Avett family, the boys as kids and their incredible foray into music. Their struggles as early musicians performing in dives for payment in bar tabs. And I want to write it.

Avetts, you are creative, wild, a blessing, maniacal, beautiful, talented, unmatched, and earnest. I love your music. I appreciate all you do to give your fans one incredible show. I thank you for having fans who seem to care about each other, even though we've never met. You give love, you breed love, and are love. Thank you.

Amazing show! Had a blast with my 11 year old daughter and a dear friend of the age 70 who enjoyed the show as much a we did. This was her first ever Avett experience, (my older friend )who as we left the concert exclaimed," Why in the world have I never heard about them boys before?" Missed Bob's presence, and will continue to keep his daughter and family in my thoughts and prayers daily. So glad we didn't have a stinky guy with his penis out or I would've been a one woman posse after his ass. I mean come on, that is just crazy!I did have a few choice words for a few drunkards a couple of rows up who would not shut up with their smart comments like screaming during I and Love and You that about putting up your three fingers. I did she Jim in a special seating area closer to the end of the standing area near the sound people. And one drunk old dude who couldn't find his seat because he was standing talking on his cell phone stopped to show me his cell phone pic of Him and his friends with Jim who they said they saw walking near the restrooms when they were going to buy beer. This was my third show and it just keeps getting better each time I see them. I hope to possibly be able to see them in a smaller arena though in the very near future.Happy New Year You all everybody!

Well said to both of you.
We were in GA and ended up about 4 rows from the stage. It was just an incredible show! There was a group of young fans next to us that were pretty loud and pushy but in the end I chalked it up to being *really* excited to see them so close., and hey, its GA. The energy exchange going on was amazing and uplifting.

The fans at this show were also hands down some of the nicest people I have ever encountered. All day, wherever we went we met folks I won't soon forget. We exchanged names/facebook handles with some and some just we just passed the time in line without introductions. But at the end we were saying heartfelt goodbyes and well wishes to about 20 people we've never met before! The Avetts breed love indeed.

The amount of raw energy that those guys put into a show just blows me away. For me it's the lyrics and the enthusiasm they bring that has me hooked. They have really changed the way I look at life, hard work, and love. We ran into Seth early in the day (he's a sweetheart) and I was shocked by how skinny he is until my husband pointed out that they are basically athletes as well as musicians.

Anyway really fantastic show, and thank you to all of kind people who worked on New Years so that we could all have such a good time!

@ChocolateMilkMaid: For what it's worth, there was a fella at the Merrillville, IN appearance who was yelling,"I love you Seth!" as well. He either hits a lot of TAB shows or Seth has his share of smitten male admirers. Eye-wink As for Jim Avett, I seem to recall reading elsewhere that he was indeed in attendance, but maybe someone else can confirm that for me.

Hope to make a NYE show sometime!

I've always thought it was the same guy because it sounds like the same guy I've heard at two other concerts besides this and also on the live vol. 2 CD, when Seth says "easy there!". In my imagination it's the same fan who's been following them around for years. I like to think so.

Mr. and Mrs. Avett were there. they were sitting in the raised platform area at the sound board. I always wonder how it must feel for them to not only watch the show but to watch thousands of people responding to their children.

This was an amazing show. from the moment the curtain (usually it is the backdrop) fell and they were already in position and playing kickdrum I knew it was going to be high energy! Laundry Room is always my favorite and this one was one of the best. It felt like the building was shaking especially the last few minutes when they just blast it. Scott and Seth were both on fire. Joe too. I love that they use Jacob and the drums now on LR. The only sad part of the night was missing Bob. He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers. Paul did a great job and I'm so thankful he can help them keep things going while Bob is out. November Blue and Just a Closer Walk were the standout slow ones for me. Both gave me chills and tears. what a way to bring in the new year!

Jim was definitely there walking around. I spoke with him for a few minutes in the concourse area. He loves to mingle with the fans. It was a great show. I thought the sound was much better at the Greensboro show back in October, but this setlist was hard to beat. 30 songs is incredible.

I had reservations about attending this concert because of the large venue and, due to my fear of being vomited on, the night it was being held. Oddly enough, those are the same reasons I decided to attend: the venue was only two hours away from home and I couldn't think of a better way of ringing in 2012 than with my favorite band. I ended up pretty close to the stage in section 103. On my way to my seat, I ran into Jim Avett and, although I tend to go oddly mute and shy around people I admire and respect, I seized the opportunity and introduced myself, shook his hand, and told him what his boys mean to me. He was very warm and kind to me - what an unexpected bonus! Enjoyed Danielle Howle and the Fireworks very much although I couldn't really make out a lot of the words in the songs, hopefully due to the acoustics in the place and not an inner ear problem. I was sitting two seats away from the parents of the bass player; they literally were beaming with pride. The Avett Brothers followed soon thereafter and did not disappoint. They played an unbelievable arrangement of songs that seemed never ending. They started with amazing high energy and ended the night the same way . . . don't know how they do it but I am glad they do! They sounded great to me, as far as I could tell, but then again, I did have a row of rather enthusiastic and inebriated young men standing right behind me whose main mission, I believe, was to out sing or drown out the boys. I mean, they were SCREAMING the lyrics and not necessarily the correct ones. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I was not in front of stinky-penis-exposed man . . . . what was up (or not) with that? Anyway, I loved the new arrangements of old songs and loved that I heard songs I have never heard live before. They just get better and better! I was unusually happy to hear the band play songs that the men behind me had never heard before because that really was the only opportunity I got to hear Scott and Seth's beautiful voices, which was one of the reasons I went. Love when they throw in a gospel tune or two, and Bonnie looked beautiful and their harmony was outstanding . . . I have two sisters and we can't sing together worth a lick . . . what are the chances of having three excessively talented children? I love to watch Joe Kwon; his joy radiates from him and is a pleasure to watch, and of course, Bob's presence was sorely missed. I stayed at the Hyatt Place about 3 miles from the venue. The desk clerk told me that 85% of the hotel was filled with Avett fans and I met lots of friendly, nice folk there, both before the concert and at the breakfast the next day which makes me proud to be a part of the Avett Nation. As a side note, when I was checking out around 11:00, I am 99.99% sure Jacob Edwards was standing in front of me but he seemed in a hurry and I couldn't imagine their drummer had actually stayed at the Hyatt Place which made me doubt myself, so I didn't say anything which of course I regret now but please refer to the aforementioned "going oddly mute and shy" reference as an explanation. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the venue, met some nice people, the Avett Brothers were outstanding, as usual, and as a plus, I did not get vomited on which I am going to take as a sign that 2012 holds good things for all of us! Happy New Year everybody!

The Avett Brothers are awesome!! This was my 5th show and it was AMAZING!! Does anyone have the whole set list? They played so many songs it is hard to remember!
