Haiti earthquake relief

Haiti earthquake relief

If you guys want to donate money towards earthquake relief in Haiti here are a few options:

Text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross

World Vision is excepting donations: http://donate.worldvision.org/OA_HTML/xxwv2ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?funnel=&...

Donate $25 at www.conduitmission.org and the money will be wire transferred to Restoration Ministries in Haiti, apparently within 24 hours.

And if all else fails, keep them in your thoughts and prayers!

Replies for this Board Topic

Well posted Kate.

Offer one up for some friends of friends of mine, two young adults from the Episcopal church who were serving there for the year- they have not been in contact as of yet.

But, friends, seriously. I try not to get on a soap box much and try not to be pushy, but when it comes to helping others in as desperate need as these people are, I guess forgive me if I'm a little bold.

But you, reading this right now, if you haven't already, open up your wallet, right now, and give one of these organizations some money to help. You will literally be clothing the naked, feeding the starving, and sheltering the homeless.

Did you know that more than half of the people in Haiti (might be somethine like 70%, hafta look up the stats,) live on less than $2.00 a day? That's how poor this country was BEFORE this magnitude 7 earthquake (with 5.0 aftershocks.)

I guarantee, those of us who can afford to spend the time on this board, afford to see as many shows as many of us have, can afford to text $10 to the Red Cross to save human lives.

If $10.00 and $5.00 donations can now fund whole political campaigns, think what we could do to help others in need.

Give up that next grande chai latte or milkshake or burger or beer. The next several if you're feeling like a hero. Delay buying that next CD on your wishlist till the next pay check and help some people who were already among the most hard up folks on earth. Haiti needs us.

Thank you for your generosity. Every cent is literally changing someone's life in a situation like this.

also good places to give (and there are plenty more if you'd like a different one.):

So so true. I'll definitely keep your friends in my prayers. There is also a group of college students from my church there right now. Everyone was reported to be safe, but I can't imagine what they are seeing under these circumstances. I am sure God is using them in amazing ways right now to help out the folks there.

I've been to a couple of those sites. How do I make sure the money donated goes to the Earthquake relief efforts. I just want to make sure it gets routed correctly. I will keep all your friends in my prayers. There are several from our Church there as well. Nicely put by you both...

That's a good thought.... I think the site that most specifically says they are giving money towards the earthquake is World Vision. The Red Cross donation goes towards their "international relief" and I can only assume that this is the main relief efforts happening at this time and that they really need all the help they can get.

That is something I looked into last night and I decided to use the Red Cross, mostly because the text was convenient and quick and I know that the Red Cross is a trustworthy company. Also, I read about it per suggestion from the White House. I would think that in the days to come more organizations and options will be presented for us to donate to as well.

most of the ones i've seen or donated through specifically say something like "this is for Haiti earthquake relief" or have a selection option for it.

like here is the specific one for Oxfam America:

thanks!

If you're a Knoxvillian-- donate your "It's Time" with Lane Kiffin shirts to Hound dogs on the strip. They'll give you a 20% off your next purchase and send the shirt to Haiti.

One with earth and one with God

Here's a pretty good preliminary list of response and relief efforts to donate to - some already mentioned and some new ones.

Thanks for getting this going Kateb.

Iwhofollowthegleam - I'll keep your friends in my prayers.

I read on yahoo that Wyclef Jean has made it to Haiti to be with family and to help out. He has a charity as well that is specifically for Haitian relief. There's information about it in this link

Lane Kiffin, hehe. What an a**hole.
I heard Knoxvillians almost rioted yesterday, burning mattresses in the street and such.
Sorry. Not trying to jack the thread.
Thanks for the tips, kateb.

Food for the Poor is a very reputable organization. Here's a link that will go to the earthquake relief:

https://secure3.convio.net/ffp/site/Donation2?df_id=6320&6320.donation=f...

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can see that 97.7% of their funds go directly to programs.

The text thing had raised over 800K by 4:30pm EST--that's pretty cool at $10/text. If nothing else this is quick and easy and only $10--we can all afford that.

So glad to hear this, Iwhofollow...

I'm happy to hear your good news IwhofollowtheGleam. I know many people will not be so lucky to receive good news as you have.

I went ahead and donated $10 by texting the word Haiti to 20222 for Bill Clinton's foundation. Regardless of what you want to think about him as a politician, his humanitarian efforts are highly respectable. There's not a doubt in my mind that the money collected by his organization at this time will go to Haiti relief. I'm also a big supporter of and believer in the Red Cross. I believe that in coming weeks and months, donations to the International Red Cross will be a big help to those who are suffering in Haiti right now.

Great article on Haiti by the wonderful and brilliant Tracy Kidder. Partners in Health, the organization mentioned, has been working in Haiti for over two decades and is now, as Kidder puts it, "the largest health care provider still standing in all Haiti."

Jonathan, I'm glad those you know are well.

Give the love you find until it's gone

iwhofollowthegleam-- that's great news!

I can't believe 800K has been raised already. It really makes you think about what more we could do as a country about other global efforts. Why not create a huge push to donate money to other causes such as stopping the genocide in Sudan or poverty relief programs like sponsoring children in developing countries. Or how Stephen Colbert raised somewhere in the 100K's over a couple days in order to support the American Olympic speed skating team. Think of what REAL good that money could do!

Nonetheless, it is awesome that everyone is stepping up to help in whatever way they can for those in Haiti!

Here is another option we are affiliated with. Cash is the immediate need.

My wife and I have a personal relationship with a couple of folks who direct the St. Joseph's orphanage for street boys in Port Au Prince. One of them is Bill Nathan who is mentioned in this update from St' Joseph's

Please talk slowly. I don't hear good anymore.

This is a cause we all need to help with. Today in my civics class we were debating on ways to help and we came up with a plan of having a bottled water drive sort of like a food drive. Once we get enough we will be sending it to the red cross and they will take it from there. But if you know any one in the Hendersonville/ Asheville region let them know about whats going on. Im sure we will be putting up flyers around town so we can get as much bottled water as possible.

I am adding a link to Glow Ministries. You can designate your donation directly for earthquake relief in one of the form fields. I have had a bit personal experience with the people that operate GLOW. The Snyders live and breathe Haiti.

Coincidently (or perhaps providence), Phil Snyder's story is scheduled to air on I Survived this Sunday night, Feb 17 on The Discovery Channel. He was kidnapped in Haiti once while trying to get a child back to America for surgery.

Please sign this petition from ONE to the U.S Treasury Secretary to elimate the massive amount of debt that Haiti owes towards the IMF. There is no way the country can rebuild when they already owe so much money.

"As Haiti rebuilds from this disaster, please work to secure the immediate cancellation of Haiti’s $890 million debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the forms of grants, not debt-incurring loans."

Sign here---- http://one.org/us/actnow/drophaitiandebt/?rc=haitidebtfb

They also have super convenient links that allow you to share the petition on Facebook and Twitter.

Paste is offering up some free MP3s for those that donate to help Haiti. More info: http://www.pastemagazine.com/songsforhaiti

I work for a privately held, dental manufacturer and we always lend a hand for these situations. For Haiti we are allowing our employees to do payroll deductions and the company is matching the first 50K raised. As well we will donate tons of hygiene and other dental products to be used in the relief effort. We always rise to the challenge and I am so proud of my company and workmates. If your company organizes such an endeavor I would recommend jumping on that as well!
