My husband and I are bringing our daughters to the Akron show in a week. They are excited, we are excited...Am I a bad mother for bringing them to this concert? TAB is in constant rotation in our minivan and the girls know all the words. I need some encouragement, people. I'm starting to feel like one of "those" moms who drags their kids to concerts.

Absolutely not! We are bringing our 3 and 4 yr. olds to the Newport Folk Fest. They too know all the words to TAB songs and are extremely excited to go! I am looking forward to it just to see their reaction and how much they will enjoy it. It's going to be the highlight of our summer!
Betsy, look at it this way. You are doing them a service. My parents badly wanted me to get into music so they decided to take me to my first real concert. Now you tell me if you think the concert they took me to is going to be as cool as the concert you are taking your children to in Akron. My first paid and seated concert was "Color Me Badd" opening for "Paula Abdul."
Ouch. I think I may have everyone beat for worst first concert ever.
No. I kicked myself for not bringing my children to the first TAB show I ever attended in Holt, MI. There were kids all over the place. My little guys would have totally dug it. Use your intuition with the venue...Some may have more Riff Raff than others, but usually peeps are respectful when they see children in 'da house.
Enjoy yourself, Mama. The Avetts are a great legacy to share with your children...

oh gosh, TAB_zealot. You do have everyone beat. My first concert was Def Leppard (with the return of the one-armed drummer, btw.) Color Me Badd. I am still chuckling. Did you follow it up with a Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam Fest?
My daughter's first concert was probably TAB. She was 9. All my kids have had great music experiences and family bonding seeing the Bros.
The only downside is if there are any offensive drunken loudmouths in the audience. I only say that - not to be negative - because it's been know to happen on occasion. To avoid it, I think the seated venues are a better bet.
This is great info, everyone. We're seeing them at Akron Civic Center, which is an inside venue with assigned seating. There will be 12 of us going with all of my siblings and more. And when the Riff Raff starts to smoke up(God love 'em) I'll just tell the girls those are Cuban cigars. My brother has seen them 3 times and he said it would be fine. I just needed to hear it from other folk. Thanks all!!
What. The. Hell.
Why are all my posties making a second or third appearance? That's annoying and stuff.
One of my favorite Avett memories is seeing a little girl being held up by her mother at the front of the stage. At the end of the show Scott, Seth, and Bobby were shaking hands with the crowd. The little girl handed Seth a flower as he mouthed the words "Thank you". Maybe you just had the be there, but that's what its all about.
I know what your saying Footstompin. I witnessed something alot like that in Roanoke last year. Dad raises little girl on stage, she runs up to bobby hands him a flower and runs back to dad. Crowd cheers, Avetts once again save the day.
At the Clinton SC show I noticed a family sitting on the row behind me with a couple of little girls who were very excited about the show. I made it a point to talk to the parents and tell them that, when the crowd moved up against the stage, we would form a human wall around the kids so they could be against the stage without any aggressive drunks pressing against them. (Thankfully there were a minimum of said drunks there that evening. Thanks in part to Steph) Anyway, it worked out great for the kids and I would suggest that we all try to help protect the littlest fans when ever an opportunity presents itself. And don’t the little kids love Bobby.
I know some on the board disagree with taking kids to shows, but I think it's great! My daughter is 15 months old and she has been to 3 of their shows. AND she will be in attendance at the Akron show as well! Make sure to come find us and say hi! We are in the first row seats 1 and 2 dead center.

I'm pretty sure that my seats are a few seats down from yours, Lamar! Looking forward to seeing ya'll (and actually getting the chance to talk to you this time).

Team Avett #36
Yeah...reserved seating makes things easier and more fun in my opinion (maybe I'm getting old lol). We can chat and relax before the show!
I've never been to this place before, I'm interested to see how it goes there. Just remember it's our job to get two encores again. The crowds in Kent have been amazing and they boys have applauded that by doing doubt encores.

so since my last post, our daughter now can recognize Seth's voice on a few different songs and has begun to call him "Sethy," so again, this is absolutely going to be the highlight of our summer! She also comments on how she loves his voice! I am enjoying the fact that both our kids love music and to be able to share this experience with them at a young age.
i must agree with some of the folks responses above. our daughter's first show she was nine years young.
3rd row at recher theatre could have been dicey (due to some "annoying drunks" types ) but folks near us
helped with that human cushion effect, and she/we had a blast. a little common sense in feeling out the venue
doesn't hurt either. at the troc a few weeks ago, we considered front rows, as we waited in line for nearly 3 hours, but opted for the raised ledge along the left wing of the floor.
she could hear/see everything, and her mom and dad could enjoy the show knowing she was safe. that was
Jess's 8th show, and she is very proud of that! enjoy the show/shows with your children- those memories are
what i call priceless.

mine was Barry Manilow, LA's Greek Theatre, 1979
Im hoping to bring my kids too eventually. My 3 yr old son walks around the house saying " boatloads of shame " LOLOLOLOL. I think they'll be fine. Get em on the right track early before you end up with "50 cent" pumping through your speakers.
Absolutely not. I am not a parent yet but i will most definitely take my kids to shows when they are old enough to dance.

I had a job interview at an insurance company once and the lady said, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" I said, "Celebrating the fifth year anniversary of you asking me this question- Mitch Hedburg
