So my brother calls me up and tells me he just found a three song EP on iTunes which includes "I and Love and You", "Kick Drum Heart" and "Laundry Room". I checked it out and it's definitely up there. Is this the real deal? The versions that are up scare me at how clean and polished they sound. I was hoping Rick Rubin would retain the rawness found on all the other Avett releases. Anyone know anything about this EP?

I read your post and looked it up on iTunes and yep, I see that too. I'm doing my best to resist listening to the samples -- for now at least. It's hard!

I am that brother that he speaks of and I am a bit confused. Are these the real versions? I would be the last person to say something worrisome or negative about the avett bros but this just doesnt sound like what was to be expected. Where are their amazing voices? It sounds almost robotic. So clean. So simple. Too polished. Ive seen these songs twice live now and "laundry room" on the tiny desk concert and they were amazing!!! These "mastered" versions or whatever they are just sound weird. Anyone???....

It's odd that I can't find the EP when I search for The Avett Brothers. I had to search for Kick Drum Heart.
Edit: Well now I can find it searching the band name. I couldn't before.
I knew it would be different.. but this is very interesting.. And as far as the "polished sound" and all that goes.. From everything I've read in interviews Scott and Seth have said it would be more polished, more in tune, more thought out, etc..
I think i'm in more shock right now than when I was when I first heard perfect shape. haha
I like it though.. love the piano(even if it is a bit poppy).

what? why release an EP when you have a full length album coming out in a couple of months. I am more than confused and am very, very hesitant to listen and/or buy.
I'm pretty sure I will wait until we get something official on this.

I understand what you (hokiehi22) are saying and have read what they have said, but the way these guys can stretch not only their instruments, but their voices just doesnt seem apparent in these few tracks. I guess I thought that would not change, instead a more "perfected" sound. This sounds like a more restricted sound.......Who knows, could be jumping the gun. Gotta give more listens...
I mean this has to be legit, if it leaked it wouldn't be on itunes.. I just assumed this was one of the surprises they mentioned when they announced the release date was pushed back. :-/ hope i'm right..

i agree with ya'll it does sound different. Haven't decided if I want to buy it yet. The albums out soon (counting down) and I really don't need these songs twice. I'm really interested if these are the final versions of these songs. Because if I'm not mistaken that is the reason the album release date was pushed back. Ughhh I don't know how I feel about this. I don't know if i should buy or not....

I can't believe I just bought 3 songs that are gonna be on a CD I'm buyin g in a couple of months.
Is this Ep our "new surprise"
Anyway....
I&love .... still love it live but this version is good and now I have a better version for my project.
Kick Drum Heart was always my least favorite of the newer songs, HOWEVER I like it/ I like it a lot actually. I was giggling. Well done....NOW I hear it.
Laundry Room .... Imma keep listening to it.
Overall....it's kinda poppy....is this the direction we're headed?

I thought kick drum heart was "my hearts like a kick drum my loves like a foot". It now sounds like he's saying my loves like a voice???? does anyone else notice this???
Are voices supposed to sound like metronomes?
I am reallllly feeling devestated at the moment. Maybe I am just tired and stunned. I do realize hearing something live, before you hear the recorded version makes a big difference, but it just seems void of any kind of passion.
A good nights sleep and some perspective may have me seeing (and hearing) things differently in the AM.

I was on the fence about kick drum heart when I would hear it live.
however it's really so fun.

Just don't know...if these are final versions I'm thinking the other albums are still gonna be getting a lot of playtime from me. We'll see how it sounds in a couple months I guess.

just listened to the clips. Laundry Room is definitely different....not sure how I feel yet. I do agree with tafkam and kay about kick drum heart, Ive never been super fond of it before but from the clip I thought it was pretty good. I haven't bought the full songs, so I guess my opinion isnt fully formed yet.

I listened to it last night several times and decided I would sleep on it and give it another try this morning. I wish I could say it had grown on me but that's definitely not the case.

i thought everyone on here was being melodramatic, but on first listen, I though laundry room was awful and that was my favorite song from i&l&y. I was pleasantly surprised by kick drum heart, it had much more of an edge. overall though, too much production. It is painfully obvious how the voices are dubbed over the instruments and what is with the dubbed over echoes in laundry room?!
I was just coming back to post that exact thing taryn - i just listened again (just the clips on itunes) and no banjo on Laundry Room - the organ/keyboard takes it's place? Man.

thats true, there are like 2 and half months to fix it. rick rubin, go to a live show with a microphone and plug it into the sound system and record laundry room. that is how the song should sound.
