I still love you, TAB, but One Tree Hill... oh my. It's BAD.

I'll muscle through for my boys, but good NIGHT this is some terrible stuff.

Replies for this Board Topic

Katie, I commented on the other thread that we started out taping and watching and had to abandon watching. I hope some kind soul will post a time frame for the Avett music.

Rejoice always, Mark

oh, it's terrible, but I'm half watching and will post as soon as I hear the song.

Wish me luck, I know you think I'll need it.
For all the hardest roads we have to walk alone.

Ooh I just got chills ... worth the wait!

Pretty horrible show, though!

the song is featured for about the last 5 minutes of the show...
horrible show, still happy for the guys.

yeah...show stinks, but the song was beautiful at the end!

Pam

thanks for posting..precious time saved (so I can hang on the board some more! Smiling)

okay, it's not a horrible show. it's one of the few that i still watch. yes, tonight's was not the best(especially for those who haven't been watching regularly to know all the back story), but at least it was redeemed at the end by playing almost the entire song.

--
Burn the questions. Burn the shame.

I was glad I had Tivo...I went through the entire show without watching till the song came on..and when it did, it was beautiful. I have no idea what the episode was about though..LOL.

I am in the middle of it and I think I just puked a little in my mouth. What we do to see the Avett's shine on the national level.

Playing the 'entire song' seems to be one of the horrible things about the show! Yes, definitely horrible. They just play songs over constant soap opera banter that is utter nonsense! CW shows seems to all be like that.....vehicles to make business partnerships with the music industry to grant guest spots and release 'soundtrack' albums. Was 'The OC' at the forefront of that business model?
But it's not just them, Grey's Anatomy is notorious for that as well.

The nonstop editing (20 second scenes) made it unbearable. It is a daytime-TV soap opera and probably belongs there.

Note...I didn't even watch it until the end. I made the decision to set this as the line I don't cross in my Avett Brothers obsession. =) I simply have better things to do with my time. Like write this.

And there are probably 8 other band websites that had a "check us out tonight on One Tree Hill!" update.

Cant say that i can convince myself to tune in. Doesnt sound like i missed much.

"Time is Art, You are Love, Peace is Now."

My wife was watching portions of the show in the other room. She kept yelling at me about how bad it was. So show is over, and we watch the final 5 on our DVR. I couldn't look for longer than 15 seconds at a time or I may never have been able to listen to I&L&U again. What was the director thinking with that long close-up of the guy's hairy chest? Talk about exposure!

I think I have to go back and watch their TV debut on Friday Night Lights to cleanse my palate. Sorry for the rant, but it was that bad.

Was it a coincidence that Dashboard Confessional was also featured? I think Miley R. U. Serious would be a step up from here.

That show is something awful. Before I became a huge Avett fan, I was really into Lucero and they were also featured on that show. I tried to manage through it then and could hardly make it.. didn't even try this time!

I didn't even make it through the first 60 seconds. I did turn it back on for the last ten minutes, though, and I enjoyed the Willie Nelson song (Angel Flying too Close to the Ground) as well as the Avett's. It doesn't sound like playing I and Love and You has earned the show any new viewers.

The CW's not as bad about their whoring music for the sake of a soundtrack as The OC was.

For anyone on the west coast or those who missed it (and care) you can watch the episode here. Or you can save your sense of good taste and fast forward to the 37 minute mark.

Love that Willie tune. Wouldn't it be sweet to hear TAB cover it?

I only watched the pertinent bits, but I will say, I got the chills too when the song started and at the end when they said "tonights episode featured the music of..." awesome how that works Smiling

I knew for sure I wouldn't make it through the entire ep..that show is BAD!
I got the chills as well hearing them on there...but...

Btw alyx, Lucero rocks!
Their new album came out the week after The Avett's. two awesome albums two weeks in row!

Sounds like most of ya'll would have been better off just listening to the track from the album......I did that and watched my dog sleep.

Jracknicu,
We may have had our words around this time last year, but you are a funny guy. I was at work, but doubt I would have suffered through a half hour of garbage just to hear some Avetts. I dare say those who did are even more dedicated than I.

Well thank-you kind sir! Yeah, I'll do some pretty crazy things to support the Avetts, but I could not watch that show....even if it's filmed in my beloved port city. My wife got on a one tree hill kick for a bit......watching old seasons on DVD, and that was time we had to spend apart.

And if we ever meet in person, I have a really funny, "R-rated/possibly X-rated" story to share about one of the female stars of that show. Let's just say that money can't buy a girl class.

HAHA! I get the feeling we would get along just fine! I used to have a friend out in Wilmington, or a backwoods town near Wilmington, anyway. Funniest guy I ever knew, must be something in the water.

He was dating my cousin a few years ago and I went out there to visit. They were extras in the awful movie "Fever Pitch" when it was filmed there. And you know what? It doesn't mean they "sold out", and I still love the both of them. Funny how that works.

"Love that Willie tune. Wouldn't it be sweet to hear TAB cover it?"

Wow, I hadn't thought of that, but I'll be thinking about it all day. I think I hear Seth singing it...

Blasto, that was an hour of garbage that some brave souls suffered through, not a half-hour. I wonder if Mr. and Mrs. Avett sat through the whole thing?

one of the worst shows I"ve ever seen.... still pretty cool to see Avetts on TV though and for them to have the exposure

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

I couldn't watch, and that's even after I discovered that that hot kid Kirby from "Lipstick Jungle" is on this show. It was horrible. I did DVR it though, and I'll watch the Avett scene tonight.

--
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

blasto,
wasn't Fever Pitch the red sox movie? they filmed part of the in backwoods Wilmington, NC?

could of been worse...coulda been on Flavor of Love. boyyyyyyeeeee.

Hahhahaha, "I and Love and You" and "Ill With Want" have a WHOLE different meaning on that show.

I ffwd to the tune. It was cheesy. Still if the boyz from Conchord won over a single new fan to add to the Avett army, then it was worth it. I guess.....

gimme- its CONCORD not Conchord

Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

Some other bands that have had music on One Tree Hill: Ryan Adams, Band of Horses, Iron and Wine, Lucero, AA Bondy, Allman Brothers, Calexico, Coldplay, Bon Iver, Magnolia Electric Company, Phantom Planet.... the list goes on. They've all survived. Everything will be okay!! http://www.oth-music.com/azlist.html

"Music plays a significant part in the plot and the movement of the scenes throughout an episode. Several scenes are tied together seamlessly at the end of each show and the song, which is usually played in its entirety and helps create a singular mood from seemingly unconnected events. A significant portion of One Tree Hill episodes are named after songs.

In addition to featuring popular indie music on the show, artists have guest-starred. The show has used the musical aspirations of two characters (Peyton and Haley) to integrate the guest storylines. The in-universe bar and dance-club 'TRIC' and 'Karen's Café' have been the settings of most of the musical performances. The season with most performances is Season 3, which also saw the release of a second soundtrack for the show. The show has a long list of artists who have participated in the show; Gavin DeGraw, Sheryl Crow, Michelle Branch, The Wreckers, Tyler Hilton, Jimmy Eat World, The Honorary Title, Fall Out Boy, Angels & Airwaves, Nada Surf, Jack's Mannequin, Michelle Featherstone, Lupe Fiasco and Within Reason. Season 5 featured Kate Voegele in an important character role as Mia Catallano, The Honorary Title and Kevin Federline in another character role as Jason. Bethany Joy Galeotti who plays Haley James Scott, Bryan Greenberg who played Jake Jagielski and Tyler Hilton who played Chris Keller have also performed on the show. Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz appeared in an episode after the band's performance as himself, in a storyline where he becomes a love-interest for Peyton. Other well-known bands whose songs have featured on the show include: Oasis, Radiohead, Stereophonics, Mclusky, Snow Patrol, Frightened Rabbit, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Bon Iver, Keane, Starsailor, Travis, Feeder, Dashboard Confessional, Pink, The Cure, Switchfoot, Audioslave and Foo Fighters.

The show has released three soundtrack albums: One Tree Hill - Music From The WB Television Series, Vol. 1, Friends with Benefit: Music from the Television Series One Tree Hill, Volume 2 and The Road Mix: Music from the Television Series One Tree Hill, Volume 3. Proceeds of the second soundtrack go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to tie in with a storyline on the show involving breast cancer. On November 13 2008, iTunes published a soundtrack called "Music From One Tree Hill" that contained songs from the sixth season.[19]

Schwahn has revealed that each episode title is named after a particular song that has something in common with the theme of the episode. For example, episode 1.02 ("The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most") is named after a Dashboard Confessional song of the same name. In this episode, Lucas realizes that basketball, which had once been his safe place, is now the place that he has come to fear the most after joining the Ravens.

One Tree Hill made history by having Led Zeppelin's song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" in its Season 3 finale. Led Zeppelin has never licensed their songs on network TV (the only other time was on HBO's cable series The Sopranos). One Tree Hill is the first non-cable network television series to ever have a licensed Led Zeppelin song on their show."

I guess I'll have to stop listening to not only the Avett Brothers, but also Radiohead, The Cure and Led Zeppelin. What I'll do is look up a complete list of artists featured on OTH, and immediately write any of the bands I like off if they appear on it. *rolls my eyes* I hope my sarcasm is apparent.

It was, apparently, a very effective marketing tool. I've already gotten comment notifications from people who went and found the I&L&Y video on youtube because they enjoyed it so much in the episode.

Give the love you find until it's gone

EE, that was long and pointless. Who suggested anyone should stop listening to the music because it was used on a horribly written, directed and edited soap opera? That would be as foolish as giving up on the Avetts because some of the people who buy their albums also watch poorly conceived and executed soap operas.

I have no idea what the show was about. I fast forward the show every five minutes until I found the song. Of course it had to be at the end! Nice of them to give the Boys props.

--
But their good times come with prices
And I can't believe it when I hear the jokes they make
At anyone's expese except their own
Would they laugh if they knew who paid?

Exposure is exposure. Crap show but I'll take it.

Carolina one day I'll, someday I'll come home.

One Tree Hill was pretty darned bad. I don't get into shows that seem to be written by adolescent girls. HOWEVER, as we endured watching it, we had no idea where it was filmed and were thrilled to make the discovery during the bridge scene. We could see the little hotel where we stayed a few summers ago (and there have absolutely been some live Avett tunes played on the pier in that canal). AND, hearing I&Love&You was like hearing an Avett song come on the radio--yeah, you could just listen to the same song on a cd but ain't it wonderful when it's playing over the airwaves!

Erik, I think you have missed the point here. No one is hating on the band for allowing there song to be featured, it is obviously a good business decision. But rather stating there opinion of the show itself, no love here for One Tree hill.

"Time is Art, You are Love, Peace is Now."

I would have to step outside of the norm here and admit that I am a huge One Tree Hill fan. However, it is a very difficult show to jump in to if you have not seen past episodes. I have been watching since Season 1 Episode 1 and featuring "I and Love and You" was an absolutely perfect fit for the show and mood. There are lots of things that are shown or talked about, but not fully enough for those that don't follow regularly to catch on. I know someone made a point about long shot at the old man's hairy chest...he had heart surgery, there was a scar, and that's just the beginning to his character, there are many more things that would take a very long time to explain, and that's just one of many characters.

All I'm saying is don't go bashing a show because you watched one episode (or watched parts of it). It is impossible to catch the story line, or the overall feel of a show from one episode. The plot continues to build through the episodes. There are lots of shows that I would say I do not like, but that's because I have only seen previews or perhaps an episode here and there, it doesn't mean they are crap, just not my taste, or personally worth my time to watch. Until you give a show at least 4-5 consecutive episodes, and learn the back story from previous seasons as well, it's nearly impossible to form an opinion.

One last thought before I step off my soapbox...we've always heard don't judge a book by it's cover...that expression can be applied to MANY more things than just books....just saying.

/end rant..carry on Smiling

No matter how many episodes I watch- it will never erase, "Marry me, you knucklehead!"

Sorry, dunks. We'll have to agree to disagree. The writing was simply not to my taste.

WillComply,
It was shot in Wilmington, he just lives in a backwoods town neighboring it. Maybe a 15 minute drive. They shoot LOTS of movies in Wilmington. My cousin's boyfriend actually got them the gig as extras because he was a local baseball player, and obviously they needed a few extras that could play well.

Dunks, let me preface this by saying that I like a lot of stuff that other people don't like (apparently all of us do, if you read Brooklyn Vegan). There's nothing wrong with that, and i don't think that anyone who is expressing disdain for the show is saying people who do like it are wrong or icky or anything like that.

But I disagree with this statement:

Until you give a show at least 4-5 consecutive episodes, and learn the back story from previous seasons as well, it's nearly impossible to form an opinion.

I formed an opinion in 5 minutes. The show is not for me. Not even the presence of eye candy and catchy songs could make me like it. My opinion may not be the same as yours, and maybe my opinion would change if I watched the show more, but I doubt it. And at any rate, I'm not sure I could watch the show more, because it really made my eyes bleed.

I'm glad you enjoy it, and keep on keepin' on. I'll just spend my monday nights watching "Intervention" and "Hoarders" because apparently, I only like my entertainment with a real heavy dose of schadenfreude.

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.

Glad I was at work, anyway. I would have been pissed if I passed up Heroes for this. And probably would have been wrestled to the floor by my other 4 housemates, in a mad dash for the remote.

I suffered through the entire hour long show. I have never watched it before in my life...I fell asleep for a while but woke up just in time! I thought the song fit perfectly at the end with all the strange relationship drama going on in the show.

Just want to throw this out there, talking about filming in Wilmington...Eastbound and Down is the best thing to come out of Wilmington!! Smiling

don't worry everyone, i'll bring the first season on dvd to the nye sleepover so you all can catch up. Eye-wink
