I know this has been done before and I found some good music so I am curious to see what the fans are also listening to these days.

Give us your top 3 or 5 or how many you fell like posting. Here are mine:

I'm a big fan of The Devil Makes Three, also (thank you Jack Daniels!)
I also adore Jeffrey Foucault.
This year I also discovered cowboy singer Dave Stamey. I didn't know I liked cowboy music! His album Tonopah is splendid (The Vaquero Song, The Circle).

I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere than in any city on earth.

The only Jefferey Foucault I have heard is his cover of Lodi. It stopped me to the point I was like "Who is this?"

I think I will dig into his stuff a little deeper.

Holy.
Ghost.
Tent.
Revival.

I can't help it, even if I sound like a broken record. After seeing them twice in the past week, I'm reminded that there's no way to overstate how much everyone needs to check them out. They're easily my number 2 favorite band, with the Avetts in the number 1 slot. MySpace, holyghosttentrevival.com, Tourcast TV...whatever you have to do.

I had a job interview at an insurance company once and the lady said, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" I said, "Celebrating the fifth year anniversary of you asking me this question- Mitch Hedburg

Really enjoying Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band - Outer South. I think he has hit a nice stride with these fellas backing him and they do trade up the vocals on a few songs as well.
Picked up Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses today another fine release from them. The new Paleface is strong as well.

I just looked at one of my local venue's calenders and there's a NC band called "Buffalo" coming. "Thrash grass" was the description given. Anyone heard of them? Could they be Avett-like??

GO SEE THEM. I went to high school with two of the guys in the band. It's a 3 piece - banjo, guitar, and bass. I guess they are somewhat "Avett-like". They have great energy on stage.

Here is their myspace link, although they sound a lot better live. http://www.myspace.com/rowdyamericana

Last night, I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day, I wrote em down
but it's a shame
Tonight, I'll burn the lyrics
'cause every chorus was your name.

I've already mentioned them elsewhere on this board (as have others), but just a reminder:
Mumford & Sons
They're almost like a British version of TAB. Emphasis on almost. Because obviously TAB is pretty one of a kind.

second avettconvert on mumford & sons

ninety and risen, soon we'll have to hide out in the shade. somewhere its raining and babe i can almost hear you say, that you love me

will third Mumford & Sons, been listening to all three eps the past few months. hopefully they have a full album sometime soon

well i believe most people know about them but:

Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles

i also second Leedle's comment about The New Familiars - they are a great smaller band from Charlotte, NC

--
Well Locust, Mount Pleasant, Concord.... LETS GOOO!

I agree with Kyle and HAsh on The Devil Makes Three
I also agree with Little Man on the Conor Oberst. Love his stuff

I will throw out Trample By Turtles as one band I truly enjoy.

Thanks everyone else on the other recomendations. I'll definately check them out

Ricker, TBT is a great recommendation. Those boys can play!

does anyone know anything about mumford's upcoming stuff? do they have a full album coming soon or not? i've been listening to the ep's for what feels like foreeeeever...i'm very curious to see what a full release would be!

I should've put these you tube clips in my initital post - but here are a couple TBT vids that should demonstrate how "those boys can play"

After listening to Mumford and Sons all day I wholehearted suggest checking them out

also

Trampled by Turtles and Yonder Mountain String Band- both great more traditional bluegrass (well at least traditional bluegrass compared to the Avetts haha)

"After listening to Mumford and Sons all day I wholehearted suggest checking them out"

jakeverb i actually did the same thing today and agree

also YMSB is great

Eh...The usual. I'm gonna add:

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2T7ZvmHz_M&feature=related

Th' Legendary Shack Shakers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbODVOMDOew

Scott H. Biram
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rEhpRmx6Q4

Lately, I've done packed it all away for the Avetts. I'm annoying myself. It's not "What band am I gonna groove to today?" Instead, I'm all, "Which TAB album is it going to be this morning?"

Seriously, it's not like I've never heard good music before. It's been a few years now...I keep waiting to get tired of them, but nope...

BTW...Didja notice, y'all? Scott H. Biram isn't for mixed company. He uses naughty words. Here's something of his that's a little less...offensive and loud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADgCYjAtRUY&feature=related

Really, you'll find anything that HIllgrass Bluebilly is promoting will be fun, Dirtyfoot, roots music:

Hoots and Hellmouth
another good band I just stumbled across care of

another good one i stumbled upon..

Hoots and Hellmouth really remind me of HGTR in some ways except with a more jazzy vocal approach if that makes any sense

YMSB
Todd Snider
Split Lip Rayfield... punk rock bluegrass!

i cant believe that Chatham County Line hasn't been mentioned. They are more of a bluegrass sound with some amazing songwriting. check em out!

ninety and risen, soon we'll have to hide out in the shade. somewhere its raining and babe i can almost hear you say, that you love me

what jakeverb said-" Hoots and hellmouth"- thoughtful songwriting, incredible vocal harmonies alternating with genuine rafter-shaking foot stomping, etc. and super nice guys to boot. geez, THAT sounds like some other band
i've heard.....

This is a bit afield from the other suggestions, but an act with similar energy as the Avetts is Ted Leo + The Pharmacists. Shake the Sheets is a GREAT album.

Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from, who did borrow from?

Worth the time to check these 3 bands out....

Come On Go With Us- They are relatively new and just released their first EP.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival- as always phenomenal

Rev. Paytons Big Damn Band- They opened for TAB in Bloomington, IN a few months ago. They sing a lot about food, but their songs definetly get you tapping your foot. They are a lot of fun to watch live. They play guitar, drums with a bucket as the floor tom, and a washboard.

I've mentioned this before - but my best friend from high school is the drummer in a band called Tenement Ruth. They're not as rockin as the Avetts, but they have that same kind of feel to them. They're just a local band in the southern Illinois/St. Louis area, not ever going to blow up...but they've released an EP and were up for Best Americana Band in the Riverfront Times (St. Louis equivalent of the Village Voice), so if you're in the area, you might check them out.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival and The New Familiars are playing my town in a couple weeks. I'm coming back from the Beach early for it. Should get some good video to throw on youtube.

Also check out William Elliot Whitmore.

hmmm...i'd have to add joe pug, matt costa, and moe. (moe. makes me jump up & down, as do the avett brothers!) and although his sound is, um, fairly different from the boys', michael franti is awesome...i highly recommend catching franti any chance you get (incidentally, franti will be playing with counting crows & another band i'm not familiar with (augustana) in charlotte a few weeks after the avett's CD release show...)! i know these might not be "lesser-known" bands/performers necessarily, but they're on my favorites list just the same!

Motorhead, The Melvins, Moby Grape. Or you might not Eye-wink

"Rock & Roll means well, it just can't help telling young boys lies." Mike Cooley

Hoots and Hellmouth...
are playing the WXPN festival July 25 in Cherry Hill,NJ(It says Camden but it's really Cherry Hill) Jesssdad you and the fam should totally come...as well as anyone else in the Philly area!

New to the board....but not to great music

Love this band.... Trent Wagler & the Steel Wheels www.trentwagler.com

also been listening to The Deep Vibration lately.

I second Joe Pug.

ooh! that Buffalo band is coming to Delaware in July! I will have to check them out. I have been pining for little shows...it's been too long. I used to go to local stuff all the time, but then the supply just cut off and there hasn't been anything to go to.

Hackensaw Boys. I saw them recently and they were amazing. Hung out with them afterwards and they were very cool. Very down to earth and liked to have a good time

Listening to Mumford and Sons as suggested. They remind me a lot of Noah and the Whale.

The Felice Brothers are amazing live!

Unfortunately I have not found anything online that comes close to portraying just how good they sound and the energy they throw out. See them live, you will not regret it.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen...

If you're insulted by the songs they loop on the radio all day. If you're
tired of your parents repeating the phrase "music meant something in my day" with baseless contempt. Here's a chance to do something about it...

I want you to give my music away.

The thing is, there's no subsidiary of Viacom shoe-horning my latest single onto radio playlists. There's no carefully worded advertisements assaulting you at the bus-stop. There's no ringles.

You heard about my music from a friend. Simple as that. Which means you listen to music because of its substance, not its convenience. And that's precisely why I'm asking for your help.

Think of some likeminded friends who haven't heard my songs. Then let me know how many sampler CDs I should send you to give to them.

All I need...

Email Address
How many CDs you want.

Send the requests to nationofheat@gmail.com

Thanks for your interest, thanks for your help...

greybird, what buffalo band are you talking about? is it donna the buffalo cause they are great?

--
"a woman's heart runs on gasoline"

I have a few of my all time favorites and although not like the Avetts they (I love the Avetts so I think they would qualify)...may be obvious to some, if so sorry!

1. Hayden - http://www.myspace.com/hayden

2. Elliott Smith - http://www.myspace.com/elliottsmithnewmoon

3. AA Bondy - http://www.myspace.com/aabondy

4. M Ward - http://www.myspace.com/mward

Not Donna the Buffalo, though I just checked them out two seconds ago and saw they are playing at the Xponential Music Festival at the end of the month. Really liked the soundclips on their website, but there is no way I can afford tickets to that fest cause I just blew a bunch of money on the box set.

Anways, I plan on checking out that band that uncch2011 recomended, Buffalo. They will be playing the Delaware this upcomming Tuesday at Mojo 13. I already posted this on the gatherings board, but I really love to meet other fans! So if any DelAvetts wanna swing by, see ya there!

I am enjoying Damion Suomi (sue-me)
