I&Love&You video on CMT.

I&Love&You video was just on Pure Country video show on CMT. My husband was watching, I was complaining because I don't like country music, and the video came on. I stopped complaining a few minutes between Taylor Swift and Toby Keith (ugh.)

I know the boys are from 'the country' and I see how some of their music fits in that genre, but I really don't ever hear 'I and Love and You' as a country music sort of song. Definitely don't wanna dig up the whole labeling/genre-defining thing again.
That's all marketing and the bigger label thing making that happen...I think. Not complaining, just a passing remark.
It's nice to see their music reaching a wider audience, because it's just plain old good music.
I wonder how much other plain old good music people miss out on by saying they don't like certain genres. The Avetts have really opened my ears up to a lot (probably at least 25 other artists
) and I love them even more for it.
When I say I don't like country, I guess I am referring to the pop country radio stuff. My friends give me a hard time because I say I don't like country. They insist some of my favorites fall into that category - Over the Rhine, OCMS, Ryan Adams & Whiskey Town, and of course - The Avetts. Oh well.... it was good to see them wherever. It also plays often on the digital tv music channel - adult alternative. I think it fits better there.
'Sall just good music, folks.
There's a country station here (Fairbanks, Alaska) that has a little mom-and-pop type morning show, where they muse on current events, movies, pop culture and times-they-are-a-changin' type topics. The lady read off Time Mag's albums of the year recently, which of course the Avetts were on. She pronounced their name aa-vett (rhyming with TABlet
) but I was happy to hear the boys get a shout-out way up here. The guy commented when she read their name, "oh yeah" like he'd heard about them. They went on to make fun of Mastodon and Lady Gaga, and I laughed, and thought about how it wouldn't be long before songs like Laundry Room and Paranoia would probably be hits on the station.
I'm glad they're getting that kind of exposure.

I'm like my grandma: short, but I stand tall, playing every card that's dealt to me. Some days are aces, and some days are faces, and some days are twos and threes.
CMT really isn't the place to put I&L&U.
i don't like country at all, TAB have a very different sound that i love, while it is a bit country it certainly can't be called that as a whole.
i don't know about y'all, but the three big things i find that set them apart are: strong use of banjo/piano, there isn't that overused "twangy" sound from that slide zither thing, and no songs just about beer or a party.
that's all i'm aware of from mainstream stuff, and the banjo seems really unique to me. like it isn't even bluegrassy or country, just something you can make a good tune with
and their gorgeous lyrics full of honesty and intelligence.
coffeebomb, i know what you mean about being opened up. after finding that vid of scott playing merle haggard's "rambling fever" on youtube, i'm taking an interest in the more classic "country" artists that helped shape their style and the stuff my parents liked. lol
The Avett Brothers may not fit in with pop country, but if CMT wants to play some of the best music on the planet, more power to them.

There's only one thing here worth hoping for.
I am bummed that I didn't catch it. I channel surfed at my mom's all weekend and when I'd stop on CMT, I would hope to catch them.
Besides, CMT really isn't REAL country music anymore. All that stopped in the 90's.
And LeftonLaura, I agree, it is a great thing if CMT does choose to play some of the best music on the planet.
Bout time.
They're Folk
Folk for sure, i find that to be the best description, but of course they have plenty of other sounds that keep them un-labelable.
but definitely good of CMT to be playing them, regardless of genre.
Nothing wrong with classic country, that's for sure. But modern mainstream country... *hides*
This is exciting! My face was on TV for a split second!
And good for CMT for deciding to put some quality music on the air waves.
Well I say yeah for CMT. Playing TAB is probably the most un-manufactured music they've ever played on that channel....which is refreshing. I, for one, like country music, but in moderation. The Avett's definitely have SOME country sounds to them, but are definitely NOT country as a whole. Like everybody seems to say, they just make good music, whatever you want to call it, it's just good. These guys rock is what they do!!
i work for cmt and we have had it playing on pure for a while along with on the website. we also have Paranoia in Bb Major on the website. check it out
