Hey bros, great show last night with Social Distortion. The sound was full and clear, thoroughly enjoyed your music. i especially loved how all the greasers in the audience got quiet for the beautiful spiritual "Closer Walk with Thee"
Right on! from Newport Beach Ca.

Did you get some videos?
i was also at this show backstage...you guys sounded amazing!
They were definitely amazing for sure, but I wasn't feeling the energy from the crowd. I was in the pit and the people standing around me seemed really confused as to why TAB was an opener for Social D. And when they announced they were doing a gospel song, the guy next to me was like, "What the f**k?" I think there was a group of people sitting in Orchestra 1 that were totally getting into it. I saw Paul smile their way a couple times. I enjoyed the show for sure, I just hope the boys didn't feel too bad about the lack of response (in my opinion anyways) from the crowd. It was definitely weird not hearing people singing along and cheering loudly. I guess I'm just too used to going to their headlining shows.
maggotrox, you were backstage?! Wow!
So from Mesa, it was either back home to catch them in Irvine (probably sitting on the grass way up in the boonies) or the Grand Canyon, I am ashamed to say it, but I picked the the canyon. I figured their set would not be so large since they were the opener, plus sitting on the grass at the amphitheater sucks, usually the video screens aren't on, and the people on stage look like aunts. What was their set list like?
I just found your setlist post, i guess i just had to be less lazy and actually look! Thanks for the setlist queuetiffany!
My family and I were probably the one's you saw dancing our fannies off in orchestra 1 (my two little kids are big big fans).
I give the band so much credit for going out there and doing their thing regardless of the crowd (I've been going to punk shows for years, but this crowd seemed particularly rough). At the end of the set, a few people separately came up to us and expressed that they had no expectation to like an opening act that was on stage with a banjo and cello, but they were blown away.
Its amazing to put on a great show for your fans, but even more of a testament to turn people on who weren't expecting it.
I was up in the lawn and found a few groups of Avett fans up there. There were people singing along to almost every song. It was definitely a different crowd though!! The guys I was standing next to were just there for TAB too. I was really surprised to hear "Closer Walk With Thee" given they were opening for Social D! I hope somebody got video of it because I would love to relive that song again. I was too overjoyed to see them perform that I forgot to get any video.. I was also quite pleased to see them sing "Down with the Shine" as I've only seen that on you tube videos. Overall it was a great performance by a great group of musicians/song writers. They displayed the same energy on stage as they did when they were the main act in Temecula in July. They played for about 45 min with no encore (since they were an opening act). I really missed Bob; he is unreplaceable. Although I hope he takes as much time as he needs to be with his family.
I'm antsy for the new album to come out next year and for the 2012 tour schedule!! I'm a new fan this year and I hope to see them more than twice next year! And maybe meet up with some other fans from here
I love TAB's music so much.
You're welcome uponcripplecreek
Thank you diabolical seamstress and lauraaaaa! I'm glad there was some action going on at the show. From the pit's standpoint, it was terrible. I think my friend got Closer Walk With Thee on video. I'll ask him to upload and I'll share it here when he does!
Closer Walk with Thee is one of my favorite Avett covers. I like Seth's part during the chorus.
I'm a little surprised by the setlist... I figured they would've gone with faster songs (Indolence and SFOS come to mind. I bet those hardcore Social D fans were completely caught off guard with songs like January Wedding and I and Love and You, lol.
I was surprised by January Wedding too! The Social D fans were caught off guard by TAB in general haha. When the cello and upright bass were brought out during set-up, I heard people around me ask, "What kind of band is this?!" No electric anything, just good old acoustic instruments. It really confused people haha.
I thought they would go for the faster songs as well. When they announced that the next song would be a Gospel song, I turned to my husband and said "bold choice, this could turn out badly". But I think that when you go out there and leave it all onstage, people will recognize..... except for 'those that don't see it'. The show was almost HFOD/RFOP come to life!
And obviously, Mike Ness knows what's up.

I was surprised by the set list too. I was trying to predict it all last week; which was pretty fun lol. I Killed Sally's Lover is the only one I got right.
And queuetiffany please do post the link if your friend uploads Closer Walk!! Thanks!
I was predicting Sally's Lover too because its so fast, but when they played it at the show, it kinda stood out as super bluegrassy and country.
Amazing show! They never dissappoint! Got several videos but I was up in Terrace section. Actually had to delete 3 of my videos because what sat down 2 seats over from me 3/4 of the way into their set was the lowest/despicable form of life ever!!!!! When the Avetts finished I turned to him and said, "If Mike Ness could hear you, he'd kick your @ss right out of here!!", and I am a VERY non-confrontational person but I'd had all I could take! AND I was by myself! Needless to say ~ I did not stay for S.D. .......I value my life! Ha!
