Capo on two.
G
She keeps it simple
C
And I am thankful for her kind of lovin'
G
'Cause it's simple

G
No longer do we wonder if we're together
C
We're way past that
G
And I've already asked her
D C G
So in January we're gettin' married

She's talkin' to me with her voice
Down so low I barely hear her
But I know what she's sayin'
I understand because my heart and hers are the same
And in January we're gettin' married

And I was sick with heartache
And she was sick like Audrey Hepburn when I met her
But we would not surrender
True love is not the kind of thing you should turn down

Don't ever turn it down

I hope that I don't sound too insane when I say
There is darkness all around us
I don't feel weak but I do need sometimes for her to protect me
And reconnect me to the beauty that I'm missin'
So in January we're gettin' married

No longer does it matter what circumstances we were born in
She knows which birds are singin'
And the names of the trees where they're performin' in the mornin'
And in January we're gettin' married
Come January let's get married

I think that it may be an Em on the "Don't ever turn down...." part but I can't quite figure it out yet

Post messed up the spacing of the chords. Listen to the song for the chord changes

thanks a lot , this is great.

"Do the best you can and that won't go unseen."

the chords sound great! does anyone have the intro figured out?

Thanks jmac for those chords. Much appreciated! And I can definitely relate to the messing up of the chords when finally posting what you've typed out. I've ended up just having to put the chord names next to the words they proceed instead of above the word. But great job w/ this!

This is how I've been playing it (w/ capo on 2 like JMAC says above):

E-------------------3---------------------3--------------------3-------------------3-------------3
B-------------------0---------------------0--------------------0-------------------0------------0
G -------------0---0--------------0------0----------------0---0-------------------0------------0
D--0--2--4-------0---0--4--7---------0------0--2--4-----0----------------0----------------0
A-------------------2---------------------2--------------------2----0--1--2------2-------------2
E-------------------3---------------------3--------------------3-------------------3-----0--2--3

Seth seems to use hammer-ons and slides during this, so just listen to the way he plays it and hopefully this will help.

Edited: The spacing got kind of messed up when I posted this, but it's just your basic G chord in between the picked parts, and a walk-up to a G at the end of the intro.

Thanks!
Doug

I wanna live, and I want you to live happy and free

Just a quick addition to the chords. For the line 'Don't ever turn it down' in the middle of the song, try this:

Don't (Am) ever turn it (C) down

I wanna live, and I want you to live happy and free

I have to say that it's one of my new favorites too. I was happy to hear it in Augusta.

"The nights only get darker before your sun will shine...leave the clock alone my brother, your enemy is time."

So I have been trying to analyze one of the line's in this song and came up with two ideas and I was wondering on what everyone's feed back was on it. "And I was sick with heartache And she was sick like Audrey Hepburn when I met her" Well two lines i suppose but the part that I was thinking about the most was "she was sick like Audrey Hepburn when I met her" is this refering to the point in Audrey Hepburn's life when she was very sick towards the end of her life or the point in Audrey Hepburn's life when her husband had other women in his life? Those were the only two points that I could come up with after looking Audrey Hepburn up on Wikipedia. This is one of my favorites on the album thus far.

amayesing,
if you look at the january wedding thread in the songs section there is a discussion about that line.

thank you hokihi22 I will have to check it out

This thread's a couple months old now, but I've got a small change for the very last line, where there's an Am instead of the usual D:

Come (Am) January, let's get (C) married . . . (G)

"Free is not your right to choose, it's answering what's asked of you, to give the love you find until it's gone."

I'm new to the Avett Brothers, but love this song.

Quick question: When you write the chord names (G, Am, C, D etc.) with the capo at II I guess you're talking about the first position shapes right? So Am is actually Bm tonally, D actually E etc.

Excuse my ignorance! Just checking as although I own a capo I rarely use it, so am not aware of the conventions. But I am looking forward to learning how to play this amazing song based on this thread.

... and thanks to those above who have spent time and effort to work out the chords and tab. Cheers!

Yes, generally when a tab is written for a song with a capo, it is implied that all following tablature and chords are in their first position. So if a tab tells you to play a 3rd fret with a capo 2 then youre actually playing the fifth fret, and a Dm would then be tonally an Em. Unless otherwise specified im pretty sure most tabs and chords on this site and avettbrotherstabs.com use the same format

Niilo:

You might like this PDF of the song, which also includes an Am chord in a couple places, missing from the basic outline above.

Bought a new capo today, have it on the second fret. Just printed your pdf, getting ready to have a go before bed.

Thanks very much!!!
